Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Khzuro tries to explain everything of what he saw in the vision to Katsu and is sure to take some notes on his own. They both sit at a table together with ink and paper.

Katsu says rather reflectively," Copper eyes?" A Chronomancer?"

"Indeed so... elf studied chronomancy. possibly taught to other elves. Kept tight secret among their own people."

Katsu thinks deeply, “It is a dangerous magic. Something one would keep to themselves."

"Indeed, sssk.. so am guessing the book was indeed one of this Hemet Netjer's books, probably on chronomancy. The trigger was made to prevent humans or possibly non-elves from accessing its contents. Of course, now it would seem that a demon has gotten access to the elf's magic somehow."

Katsu makes note and says, “But this may help us at the mage meeting in the imperial city."

Khzuro pauses, considering… "Would imply that perhaps a student of this elf's learned the art and then had dealings with demons, which is how the demon came to have access to this magic..." A heavy sigh "Is speculation though, still."

“Or…?”

“Or time travel, you think?”

Katsu changes the subject. “Hemet-Netjer what does that mean?”

"Figured it is an elven name. Suppose this one could ask again..."

"Let’s see if we can find a referance.”

"Ssskh, also said Mrs. Sithiir.... suppose that's another ... wait, for names... they also mentioned priestesses of "Naralis", never heard of that name..."

Katsu chuckles, “Well looks like we have some studying to do. Let’s go. There has to be some referance here.”

"Is hoping. Suppose this one could ask his associates for further translations,"

"I can call them if you like.”

"Would be helpful, yes."

He writes some quick letters and leaves. You wait a couple of hours, and several come.

Drasta gets a letter to come to the library. She finds it in the city not sure why she was called. She is blindfolded by the librarian and led through several halls around bookshelves sometimes in circles then down a flight of stairs. She finds herself in front of Khzuro two men and a woman when she gets there.

She counts and attempts to remember every step and turn. Khzuro, Ogano, Kazuko the diviner has come along with Katsu. They all introduce themselves.

Drasta takes a pause and counts steps and turns, finding she knows exactly wherever this is within the library. Kazuko studies the elven carefully. "This is highly unusual" Organo retorts, "It’s also unusual for time to be stopping every few days."

Khzuro is the first to address her. “They know the basics at least. But why this one called you here is important. Can give a little summary if desired. But need some more words translated. Or if you've heard of names. That is: 'Hemet', 'Netjer', 'Sithiir', 'Jeriah', 'Naralis'."

Drasta thinks for a moment about all the books and information she has gathered over the many years with her hand on her chin. “Naralis is well known, as perhaps in easier terms a guardian of my peoples’ souls after the passing. Jeriah though That is a very old name ancient even. If memory does not faulter me. Naralis is stated to be the direct servant of Sehanine as well.”

Kazuko is perusing the books in the library and says, “I found something.”

Khzuro looks over to Kazuko. “What is it?” Then looks at Drasta again. “What of ‘Hemet’ or ‘Netjer’?”

Kazuko answers, “I found a referance for a Hem-Netjer. It means high priest in countries called Thay, Mulhorand, Uther, and Chessenta. Theres a notation. High priest is a term for anyone of high status in a profession A Hem-Netjer could be a leader of priests, teachers, government administrators or even teachers. they are a direct link between the gods that rule the lands and the people that they administrate too. Mages too, I would assume.”

Khzuro looks at him queerly, "Curious... but the one from the vision was an elf..."

Ogano asks, "Perhaps they are nations of elves?" Everyone turns to Drasta questioningly.

“It could be possible this would have been thousands of years ago. Most elven clans that any would come across are smaller less they are found in the other realms.”

Khzuro now describes his vision too Drasta. She startles, “Curious.” She starts rummaging through her pack which seems bottomless and pulls out a large tome and sets it on the table flipping through pages quickly.

Khzuro winces his eyes on concentration, “Seems odd to this one though. An elf high priest and Chronomancer using Mulhorandi titles? ..." "and now to our current situation, a demon somehow got access to this knowledge and power." Pauses, looking to Drasta and waits as they look through the tome.

Drasta stops flipping through the tome and deepens her expression. “of course... The woman you described is an elder sun elf. That much I can state...Though the other is…” Stops reading a few lines then flipping to a page further back for referance. “Jeriah he is an ancient Netheresse arcanist known as The Chronomancer. Looks over to Khzuro and the others.

Ogano looking through some books says, "I'm not sure but I found something.... maybe?"

Khzuro says questioningly, “Netherese?”

Ogano says while he reads, “It says here when the people of Mulhorand die their souls must be weighed on something called the scales of truth. Their souls must weigh less than a feather. However, it is their belief that the treasure they bring to the grave can be put on the scales with the feather so the more treasure the more counterbalance to the soul. Thus, many are buried with as much treasure as they can acquire for their grave."

Khzuro cranes his head, quietly listening.

Katsu considers everything. "If this woman was an unknown chrono mage and had that believe and a strong feeling that her magic was too dangerous for others to have. She would have it buried with her.............The demon may have found her grave.”

Drasta looks at Khzuro. “The woman was on a boat...Was not that blue elf searching for something similar?”
Kazuko almost thinking to herself says, "Think of all the wonderful toys you could find an a Chronomancer’s grave.”

Ogano gets thoughtful. "Probably toys that could completely rewrite history or the world’s direction. We need to get going to the imperial city as quickly as we can."

Answering Drasta’s question, Khzuro says, “They indeed were.” He sighs heavily and continues, “Demon may have found her grave, but her spirit is possessing someone currently. They're still trying to keep chronomancy secret. Despite how they were in the vision, they'd have had to change a lot to start dealing with demons now."

Kazuko thinking says, “Unless...........Maybe she’s trying to protect her magic from the demon in some way or even fight him."

Ogano asks, “Are these sun elves evil by nature?”

Khzuro says, “Think that's more likely. Except she probably doesn't trust us either or may think we're the ones who are potentially collaborating with the demon. This one knows little of sun elves, am afraid." He looks at Drasta.

Drasta nods, “They were among the people where I was raised.”

Kazuko asks, “If you know them, you must know their general nature?”

“I do know about them yes, is there something that you would ask?”

Ogano again asks, "Are these sun elves evil by nature?"

“I believe most were good in nature though very persistent in mastering any talent they sought after. This would make one who studied at any profession quite powerful. Though I never remember one being naturally evil.

Ogano then says, "Then most likely the ghost is not working with the demon. most likely against him in some way. Are there any indications this is true?"

Drasta adds, “I remember some books referring them as the chosen of Seldarine as they were deeply religious.”

Kazuko says, "that would seem to conform with our theory. if she is Mulhorand in thought she would be buried with all her treasure." Drasta nods to her.

Khzuro considers everything and says, “Possibly buried with that hourglass the demon has... Which would mean some time ago, someone raided and probably plundered her tomb? Which then caused her restless spirit to manifest and is likely possessing people in order to get the hourglass back, or to stop the abuse of chronomancy."

Katsu nods, "A compelling theory."

Drasta nods, “It is not unheard of for an elf's spirit to stay on this plane if it is needed.”

Just as Drasta finishes, time stops again. The demon comes through the wall. He speaks to Khzuro. “Is it a split in reality?” The crystals in the hourglass fall and he disappears.

Khzuro looks over, “It just happened again.”

Drasta is clueless but Katsu stands up excited. “Did you just see that!”

Khzuro looks up surprised. “You saw it too.”

All the wu-jen nod their heads. Drasta arches a brow curiously. Khzuro again shakes his head. “You saw the demon this time?”

Kazuko says, "yes I saw it. strange creature but the sense of evil is unmistakable. and there was not sand in the hourglass but tiny black and white crystals."

Ogano says, "I was so surprised I didn’t even notice."

Khzuro considers, “Black and white crystals, like what is used with necromancy...?"

Katsu answers, "Obsidian is used in many necromantic spells but white crystals? I've never heard of anything like that?"

Kazuko asks, "Maybe diamond dust?"

Ogano says, "Used for many spells but nothing I know about necromancy."

Katsu says, "Perhaps at the meeting of mages in the imperial city we will find out more."

Drasta just listens since this is a bit out of her element.

Khzuro questions, “I guess the big question now is... who is the woodsman that this elven spirit is currently in possession of..."

Katsu asks, "Is the woodswoman Kozakurian?"

Thinks on the description that Sei gave him from his dream... “Yes, she is.”

Katsu continues, “What was the terrain like?” Khzuro describes it in as much detail as he remembers from what Sei told him of the dream. “That would be in the far northern provinces of the big island or the smaller ones to the north of it."

Kazuko says. "The people there.......they are less educated than we of the southlands. and Koryoan blood is thick in their veins."

Khzuro just raises an eye ridge, not seeming to understand all the regional differences, but also tries to recall if he's seen anyone with appropriate physical features, but then again, he's not sure what to look for in the first place.

Kazuko says, "It looks like that is all we may find out or collectively hypothesis until the meeting at the imperial city.”

Khzuro gives her a nod considering, “"Guess so... unless..." Khzuro spends some time thinking...
"Don't know why the demon is targeting this one, though."

Katsu chuckles, "If you could move forward or backward in time...... would you not know your greatest enemies."

Kazuko adds, "Your own death for that matter."

Khzuro stares at them all. "Point... Or if you could find a way to prevent it..." Khzuro considers the other mages for a time...

Ogano nods.

Drasta gets an idea. “Perhaps these messages you received have to do with how he is traveling through time.”

Khzuro considers this too. “Hum.... interesting theory? Had assumed it was that magic hourglass he has. But... this is well beyond anything this one has seen before... his recent ones were asking if reality is just a myth, or is it a split in reality..."

Ogano calls the meeting to a halt. “We have more information. We need to sleep and think about this, and it is getting late. We can meet again on the way to the imperial palace to confer.”

The group breaks up. Ogano, Khzuro and Drasta go back to the palace. Each to their place. Drasta to her barracks. Khzuro and Ogano to the palace proper. They all have a troubled sleep.

The next night after the library, Khzuro gets another demon visit while he’s walking the hall to his room. The creature walks down the hallway to him as others are frozen in time. Khzuro notices that its walk seems somewhat unnatural as if the skin on his body is hiding a machine beneath. He says to the kobold, “Why is that.” As the demon passes him the last of the crystals fall and he disappears.

Khzuro sighs and considers where he is. He tries to make note of any physical details about the differences in the last visits. He figures out that the demon did always move like that before. It’s just that this time he catches the supple difference as the narrow hall provided him with perspective. There is something about his makeup where he moves more like a machine than a natural being. He just can’t seem to place it.

In the morning several women come to the besshikime barracks and deliver to Drasta 5 new kimonos. (these ones fit) 4 sets of Gi and 2 light armor uniforms. Each ensemble has the Barasume mon and below Furi’s clan mon. It also has a marker to say that Drasta is a trainee and not yet a full besshikime. There is a note with it from Furi. It says, “Leave your hood at home.”

Khzuro goes down to the library to do an in-depth study on demons. After an hour the librarian comes down to the secret part of it. She bows then says, “There is an administrator here to speak with you.”

He bows in turn. “Of course, thank you. Where should I find them?”

“At the front desk, sir.”

The kobold dips his head, waves farewell, then heads to the front desk. The administrator is waiting. He bows to you since this place is considered a private sanctuary for wu-jen and Khzuro is now a recorded member. He dips his head in turn then looks around to see if they are somewhat alone. In fact, they are not. People go back and forth checking books. He gets a hold on himself, “Greetings, ah, you wish to speak?”

He nods, “The shogun would like to see you. Go behind the practice fields and walk the paths. When you find his guards, they will direct you to him.”

He nods it turn. “Of course. This one gives thanks." Khzuro considers asking what the Shogun wants to see him about but doesn't voice it. Then he goes where directed.

It takes him the good part of midday into the afternoon when he gets to the paths behind the practice fields. As you walk them two guards are in the lightly wooded area. They stop you. "The shogun is sitting on a bench up the right path. Approach him quietly and with dignity but do not sneak up on him." They also say do not bow.

He gives a nod, figuring this is something they don't want to advertise closely. He moves where directed. He tries to move with dignity, the kobold is naturally a quiet stepper, but he does attempt to not sneak up on the shogun.

As Khzuro approaches he sees him on a bench. There are 5 guards leaning against trees. You also see that there are sika deer in the area anywhere between 25 and 100 yards. He’s watching them graze.

Khzuro takes not of the guards. But still approaches with dignity. The shogun shifts his eyes to you and pats the empty part of the bench beside him.

He nods, then goes to sit beside the shogun. Though he does make sure to see if he looks like the shogun he met before. He is the shogun but in a simple gi and wooden shoes. Khzuro climbs up on the bench refraining from snuggling with him for now.

Kyo watches the deer silently for another 1/2 hour until the herd starts to move away. He then says, "It seems that you have a made a good friend in Shinto Haruki."

"This one had been hoping to visit her again soon." A nod aside...

"She is well. I do not break the spirit of hospitality."

"Thank you." Gives a grateful nod aside.

"It took me a long time and with much advice to decide what to do with her. The imperial city always has meetings. These meeting are for many reasons. I in fact know that there will be one where young people meet....... to get to know each other. So, I am sending her with you and my first wife who is on another important mission for the clan.

I have decided that because she trusts you and you have been nothing but honorable to my house that you should choose her next husband at this meeting. I feel that I will be leaving this important decision in capable hands. She cannot marry a lord or Samurai. However, there are other nobles and administrators that would make good suiters."

Pauses, considering "Do you think she is ready for having a new husband of yet? This one while he was within that household..." Pauses, not wanting to speak of what happened there in too lurid detail. "Has hoped for her recovery, but such wounds take time and care to heal."

"It is a grand tragedy what happened in that family. I knew what he did to her sister. What he tried to turn her into. If I had known the rest. There would have been inquiries but as all samurai families these things are hushed due to honor and status. Now it cannot be helped. That is why I need you now."

A nod in turn "Of course." ...

"Your job will be to find that man or woman that can help her heal. You know her better than anyone here. It must be you to help her mend her wounds with your choice of her companion. Someone that will help not cause more wounds. It is the best I can do from my position."

Time suddenly stops and the demon pays Khzuro a visit. Walks from around a tree and walks to where the two are. He looks at the shogun indifferently then looks to Khzuro. He smiles, “It’s always different.”

Time starts again. The shogun looks at Khzuro waiting patiently for an answer.

A nod to the Shogun "This one shall do his best." He doesn't mention the demon visit, figuring he wouldn't be believed anyways. "How do you want to handle this? Will she meet them one at a time? At a gathering? Information provided about the perspectives. Or something else?"

"It will be at a gathering. Yoshie will be there with Hideo."

"This one has not had good impressions from Hideo from prior encounters. Am hoping he has improved himself."

"His mother coddled him after the deaths of our other two sons. I am correcting that. He is on a stringent schedule now. If he doesn’t not learn quickly, I will deem him unfit for leadership and will have to trust Eri to produce an heir."

A nod, accepting that "Glad to hear. When shall this gathering be?"

It will be at the imperial palace. A place much larger than this palace. Almost a city to itself. It will be around the time of both the mage's meeting and the time when Yoshie will be........ negotiating with the emperor’s wife and her staff. Though I do not know the exact day."

Another nod "Of course. Will be there, barring unexpected, horrible disasters..."

The shogun nods, "Do understand this is the best I may do for her. She is a noblewoman and thus has certain duties for her family. The Shinto women have a responsibility to carry on their line. Perhaps the next generation will be better than Sadao’s ilk."

"So, this one hopes."...

He nods. "Is there anything else, Khzuro? Anything you want to say?"

Khzuro considers for a time "Suppose not, unless there is ought else you wish to ask? Figure Ogano is keeping you appraised of 'Arcane' matters..."

"He is and I must congratulate you. You have been of great service to him. It is appreciated."

Khzuro Dips his head "Of course, am glad to help. Was there anything else you wished to ask this one?

Is... just hoping that doesn't cause complications. Am afraid that will have to come first if there is something that comes up when Haruki is meant to meet her perspective husbands."

He looks out to the woods again, "Yoshie will try to not let that happen. We've been married a long time. We have each other’s trust. I rule an entire region of Kozakura now. It may seem small, but it is hard work. I must attend to other matters. Be at peace, Khzuro."

"Of course. May the gods be with you." Dips his head, then goes to stand up and depart.

Kyo stands with him. Honorifics are exchanged this time. The guards watch Khzuro as he leaves and monitor his movements until he gets to the practice field again.

After the meeting with the shogun Khzuro goes down to the concubine house. The guards are there but they let him pass being the sun is still up.

He finds her in her room reading. When he opens the door, she smiles then rushes over, picks him up and hugs him. Khzuro enjoys the hug immensely and happily returns the snuggles. He hugs her back. She sets him back down then drops to her knees so that she’s eye level with the kobold. “Khzuro! Oh, it’s nice that you visit so often.”

“Aye. It’s… been a busy time, but this one said they’d come back, yip. And here he is. Whew, was quite the adventure. Am sure have already circulated by now.”

She nods. “They say you were blessed by a god. Would you like to play Shogi?”

"Certainly, and... ah ha, it is indeed true. This one and the priestess he accompanied."

"She must be a wonderful priestess then and strong in her faith."

"She is indeed." He nods. She sets the chess pieces up on the board while he continues. Hope you have been well while this one has been away?”

"It has been lonely. I just don't know how to act around the other girls. I stay quiet and help clean up around here. The besshikime won’t let Hideo in and the shogun only comes in once a 10 day or so."

"Ah, am sorry to hear." A slow nod "Though perhaps it's best that they don't let Hideo in."

“I don’t like him. The shogun is always respectful and stays with his women leaving me alone. Etsuko and Suzu are gone so there’s only 3 of us now.”

"Ah... where did Etsuko and Suzu go?" He Chats while playing Shogi, trying to observe how Haruki plays, maybe it'll say something about her.

"They went to other courts. Etsuko is now a concubine to a daimyo and Suzu to an island shogun on Norekaikyo."

"I see... were they happy with their new... arrangements at least...?" He frowns, considering then remembers Norekaikyo is the second largest island in the Kozakurian empire.

"I think they were very excited. I think they were also tired of Hideo. He's still.... not a man yet."
"Am glad for them. Am also not surprised about Hideo. Last time this one saw he was getting a well-deserved beatdown. Ssskh.... wonder if he will ever be suitable."

"I do not know Khzuro, I have seen so many people change though and not for the better. My father made my sister murder a teacher of hers when she was 10 or 11. A boy from the fighting pits in the city here. When she cried, He whipped her to unconsciousness. Now she is a piece of iron."

He makes a slow nod... "I understand..." A breath out, considers, looking to the Shogi board, also trying to see if Haruki is playing well, or if she seems distracted and unfocused when playing. He sees that she is defending rather well but not aggressive in her attacks or her pieces. She’s been passive, holding onto what she has, afraid to take a more aggressive step. He continues again. “So, ah... have you thought about where you want to go from here?"

She shakes her head. "My uncle put me in Barasume hands. I'll go wherever they want me."

"Well, if the choice was yours, where would you go?"

"Whatever decision they make I hope it’s before Miwa returns. I do not think I can face her. I don’t know anything about the world, Khzuro. Only what I was taught from a decade ago in my schooling. I.... just .... would not know. The only thing I know is running a household."

He nods and asks, “Well, what would be needed for that?"

“I had to keep the books, give father his allowance, keep track of profits and losses, cook, clean, and pay retainers. (The women in Japan always hold the family finances from ancient times even to this day. Husbands get an allowance.)

"I meant more for... you to start running a household again."

She thinks a long time, "It would depend upon the household. I know I can’t have a samurai husband. I'm not sure."

He nods, noting the preference. “What would you look for in one?" She looks down and tears come to her eyes. He moves to hug her.

She hugs him. "Before mother died, I always thought I would marry a Samurai or even a lord. Izumi and I would play princesses. We were so sure that we would be happy with a good man. Then she died having Sango.......everything changed. Everything went so bad." He gives her snoot-rubs, listening while she speaks. “We even used to taunt Miwa. She would get cut up and bruised and we would say she would never find a husband as ugly as she was. She was so small and getting all of daddy's attention. She broke my arm when she was 7. I deserved it and Izumi deserved her beating too. We should have suck up for her. We were her big sisters in the end we helped daddy torture her. Then she left and his attention fell on me."

He frowns, nodding, still listening. She releases him. Tears have smeared her makeup all up. Some of it is on Khzuro now. He doesn’t seem to mind, but he definitely considers her state.

One of the Besshikime guards knocks on the door and doesn’t wait to be let in. She bows politely, noting everything in the room to make sure nothing happened. It’s purely instinctual. “Khzuro its time for you to leave. The sun is setting.”

Khzuro and Haruki stand up. Khzuro bows then Haruki last. They hug once more, and he departs to his own quarters in the palace. Before he gets outside the guard says. “It would be best not to leave here with makeup all over your face.” She hands him a damp towel.

He wipes his face off and continues on.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

The morning after Khzuro talks to Haruki a large contingent of the Barasume household departs for the imperial city of Dojyu. Everyone is up, ready and horsed. Furi insists Drasta rides with her. Sei and Kinu ride together. Hideo is on horse in light armor riding with his mother and Samo. Umi and Kei are with them. Everyone else rides as they pretty much please except for the 20 Samurai outriders and guards. It is a show of force with many banners.

They make it to a village nestled in the foothills of the mountains. The inn has already been vacated except for servants and girls. Theres a huge table prepared for them. Yoshie sits at the head. Hideo to her right. Sei and Kinu to her left. The meal is huge and fit for a shogun. All have time to banter for a while.

Khzuro seeks out as many head pats as possible. listens in where he can. As far as rumors he hears the same as he heard before in the palace. Drasta enjoys her meal listening to the conversations carefully for any information that would interest her. Occasionally Ume and Kei stare at her and whisper to themselves. Drasta tries to pick up on what they are saying.

She does hear them. They are talking about her being the enemy in a sense and that politics will get hot and heavy at the special meeting now that Drasta is on the other side. When Yoshie hears that she quiets them down.

As everyone eats Kinu keeps putting salt on her food. Yoshie turns to her asking, “Is something wrong?” Sei looks a bit confused at Kinu as well.

Kinu rather loudly and upset says, “Nothing tastes right at this inn!” Every woman’s head swivel and suddenly pays attention to her.

Sei’s look switches from confusion to concern. “That’s… not good. Does it…not smell right either?”

Furi completely ignoring Sei is the first to speak, “Try squid ink dear.”

Another says, “Vinegar.”

Kinu smells it and looks at everyone suddenly embarrassed. Yoshie puts her hand up for everyone to stop. She says, “give me your plate, dear.”

Khzuro looks up, taking a sniff. Not of anyone’s butt. He’s so far away from the head of the table he cannot smell anything but the food around him. It all seems fine.

Yoshi smells the plate and calls for the owner.

Drasta watches curiously but at the same time not so much placing her chopsticks down on the rest no longer hungry hearing all the conversations.

Sei also sets his chopsticks down with a growing look of concern on his face.

When the owner comes over Yoshie hands the plate to him. “Our Kinu doesn’t like her food. Do you have fresh fish?”

He nods, “Perch, mountain bass, trout.”

Yoshie thinks a moment then tells him, “I want you to make her a who filleted trout, spicy, sprinkle charcoal over it like pepper. I’m fairly certain she will like that. Oh, and over a grill with smoke. blackened at the edges too."

The owner laughs and goes to the back room. Sei asks Kinu what she was served before?

She says, “Kobi beef with vegetables in a stir fry.”

In 30 minutes, the owner comes back with the fish and sets it in front of her. All the women watch carefully. Drasta is also paying attention to what’s going on. Kinu takes a bite then another and looks at Yoshie. This is really good!” Yoshie smiles and nods. Some of the other girls giggle and the meal resumes. Everyone starts to eat again.

Khzuro looks up to see who he is sitting with. Haruki is beside him on one side and a little 5ft 3in samurai by the mane of Katashi is on the other. They are both giving head pats. Drasta sits back after she is finished and stares at Kei and Ume thinking, ‘It's not my place to speak in general here.’

At dessert Yoshie says, "There must be a crone in the village. Girls, shall we after dessert? and the men are welcome too." Most of the men go pale and shake their heads. Khzuro blinks confusedly, but Samo raises his hand.

The girls look at him. He smiles, “Someone has to dance.”

Sei just shakes his head softly at Samo’s remark.

After dessert Yoshie gets up. “Sei, Kinu come with me.” Sei gets up to join Yoshie, although he has a slightly puzzled look on his face.

Khzuro watches the others carefully, especially seeming to watch how they regard Haruki. Haruki becomes all smiles, for once, and looks like she’s anticipating something. Kinu gets up utterly confused.

Ume and Kei also get up and follow the three upstairs. Drasta smiles slightly and stays a bit quiet watching everyone. Furi gets up joining the girls dragging her along. Khzuro also utterly confused stays beside Haruki as she bounces up and joins the large entourage of women.

As soon as Yoshie’s small group leaves all the women get up and start to go outside with Samo and Khzuro taking along.

As they get out into the street all the women start buying small bags of street food wherever they can find it and ask where the old Crone is. They are directed to a home.

Upstairs at the inn Yoshie asks Kinu, "Where did you grow up?” while she’s changing behind curtains.

Kinu says, “A monastery in the mountains. I started my training as a Sohei and left after a few years."

Yoshie laughs and says "Thats why. After we get changed, we will introduce you to someone special."

The girls find the home. There are several benches out front and all of them find a seat with their food like fried octopus and spice shrimp on a stick. Katsu knocks on the door.

A middle-aged woman opens it. Katsu says, "The first wife of Barasume needs your services. if you please?”
She peeks out the door seeing everyone and says, "Well, I'll try to give you a show then. let me get dressed.” Katsu then sits on Samo’s lap and holds him around the neck.

Aiami gets up and smiles. "Ok ladies it’s time for bets. Does the old crone say yes? its 10 Ryo you throw in the pot and 10 Ryo to the crone if you're wrong.”

Drasta tosses a pouch to Aiami. She asks, “Yes or no Drasta?”

“Yes.”

Khzuro looks to see if Haruki is betting. She is and bets, yes. Khzuro refrains from betting.

Aiami quiets the women down again. “Does Kinu say yes, or no?”

Again, most say yes, a few say no. Haruki says yes and throws her money in after that she claps. Drasta throws more in and says yes. Khzuro doesn’t bet.

Khzuro goes around seeking head pats, Kowing they’ll all head pat him for good luck. His ridges hurt when he gets back and sits beside Haruki still confused about what’s going on.

After the money goes into the pot Aiami asks, “Will Sei say, YES?”

Here things change. Half say yes and the other half say no. The yeses throw food at the ones that say no, and they all laugh. Neither Drasta nor Khzuro bet on that one.

Aiami smiles again. “Will the Old Crone have to go to the bones?!”

Drasta blurts out, “One would hope.” Several pieces of street food are thrown at her and several of the women laugh. Most say yes, but some, including Samo and Haruki say no. Drasta throws her coin in and says yes.
Aiami puts her finger up. “And here is the last one. If all goes well……How many will there be?”

The women all quote numbers and throw their coin in the pot. 1,4,2, Aiami says 7 and everyone looks at her funny. Haruki says 4 and Drasta 2 with a ‘Seems certain look on her face.’

Khzuro Raises an eye ridge, confused, but doesn't comment. He just keeps looking for good luck head-pats.

Yoshie, Ume, Kei and Kei are dressed now and start to lead Sei and Kinu downstairs.

The woman comes of her home dancing out in multicolored robes with a ridiculous head dress on. She has a mask of a fertility goddess on. Samo moves his lap girl over and starts to dance with the woman.

Ume and Kei flank Sei and Kinu up to the home. Sei sees all the women there with Samo and Khzuro. Samo is dancing with a middle-aged woman. Everyone else are on benches and having a good time. Yoshie is behind you and Kinu. As they walk up the dance stops. The old woman stops and asks, "Are these the two? What are your names?"

Sei just chuckles, “I'm Sei" and shakes his head softly.

Kinu, still a little confused says, "Kinu."

The old crone goes on. “Ok both of you lift up your arms parallel with the ground.” Kinu lifts her arms. Sei lifts up his arms as well, although he looks rather puzzled by this all. The woman dances around the two of you a few times and pushes both Kinu and Sei. Sei doesn’t move at all, but Kinu stumbles a bit.

The woman comes up in front of Kinu and laughs. “I can see why you’re here. He’s a giant. But then again Barasume’s like their men big.”

That draws laughter from all the women, and they throw some street food at the old lady. she smiles. "Ok, lift up your trousers a bit let me see those feet. Feet are important you know. especially in men." That draws more laughter from the gaggle. Sei just stares at the crowd puzzledly, but slowly does as he is told. Drasta shakes her head a bit and leans on a frame of the door at the house.

The crone looks at Kinu’s feet first. “Ah…. So dainty and small, but my what callouses. Still, very pretty.”

She walks over to Sei. "ACK! You got more hair on those puppies than a mountain gorilla! And so big! Say You don’t walk around in the woods at night making footprints all over the place, do you?"

. The girls get quiet listening for his answer. He just laughs at the comment but doesn’t respond further.

She smiles "I like you if there’s more where you come from send them here." That gets an uproar from the gaggle, and they throw more food in the vicinity of Sie, Kinu and the woman.

The woman chuckles. “Ok, time to show me your teeth.” She goes over to Kinu. “Open your mouth girl.” Kinu opens them.

“Oh, such pretty white teeth. What do you use?”

“Syrup from a fusil tree.”

"Ah! good idea. I'll have to try that. smiles with her yellow teeth. and you got all of them."

She goes over to Sei. He bears his teeth with a big grin. She looks in his mouth. “Ack! What are those! Those molars are so pointy! and my you have big teeth!" She turns away a second. closes her eyes and thinks then peeks in again..........." ACK! I don’t know what to think."

Drasta lightly chuckles from her spot.

The Old Crone sighs and dances around Sei and Kinu again examining them from time to time.
When she is done, she stops in front of them. "Girls get the hoop. I have to roll the bones."

Many of the girls celebrate and get a ten-foot hoop. and place it on the ground." They dance out Samo joins them. They put it on the ground the old woman starts pulling bones from the strings of her robes. "Let me see 6 ft, 5 foot 4, petite feet. and.....” She digs out a bone. “Hairy and large. Yep, I do have one. Ummm teeth…. have hers.” She pats for more. “Awe I bet I know.” She draws out a bone with teeth marks on it. “Mainlander and Kozakurian.” She digs more bones out. “And, stable and not so dexterous...........when not ready goes to the personality you know.” She digs more out. She puts them in a jar and shakes it vigorously. The woman then throws them into the hoop.

All the girls watch. The woman studies the bones. No one speaks. After a time, she raises her hands up. A lifelong relationship with......................14 children. Your both sluts!..........You poor girl! I approve of this marriage.”

The gaggle cheers and goes wild throwing food at both Sei and Kinu who is now pale as a sheet.

Sei just shakes his head slowly with a small laugh.

The woman comes up to Kinu. Well. “What do you say Kinu?”

"14!" She faints. Which sends the girls laughing again. Yoshie rushes over and fans her. when she wakes up, she says, “yes.”

The old woman now comes in front of Sei. “So, what do you say Sei? She’s already carrying one or two of your children.”

All the girls are watching Sei now with bated breath.

"You all are a silly bunch" Sei deadpans and shakes his head.

Many of the girls go awe.... but many won that bet. Yoshie pats Kinu its ok. You'll be well taken care of, and your child will grow under our protection.”

. Samo comes over and pats Sei on the back. "Doesn’t mean a thing. She’s still your apprentice and you two can still have your nights."

Haruki looks disappointed.

Some of the girls still want to celebrate. Everyone foes back to the inn after bets have been paid and the rest go to the matchmaker.

Samo sits down with Sei at the bar and pours him a liberal amount of Sake. Sei sips the sake very lightly. Yoshie comes over to the table and sits down. Samo pours her some too. She looks at Sei. “We have a very important mission at the imperial city. Now that that’s over we can get down to business.”

"Aye, having to deal with...matchmaking, no?"

She nods, “But not here. Furi and Drasta may be listening. We'll meet tomorrow in the woods. Samo, Ume and Kei will run cover for the two of us. You'll be my advisor and be next to me. We must find a way to convince the emperor and his people we know what is best for the realm in regard to the marriages of our people.”

“Right.”

“Drasta is not your friend in this Sei. She knows more than us in one of our cases. Furi will use her to disrupt and find out our strategy.”

He nods, “We will speak more tomorrow then." Yoshie nods and orders more Sake.

When Sei goes to bed Kinu tries to snuggle up to him. Sei just chuckles and wraps a hairy arm around her. She smiles and goes to sleep in his arms.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

In the morning two administrators show up at Furi’s door. One wears Furi’s clan mon the other wears the Barasume mon. She invites them in and calls for Drasta. Drasta quickly comes, goes to attention and bows. They all recognize her.

Furi makes introductions. “Drasta this is administrator Kazuhiko from Barasume and administrator Takeo from my clan. They are both lawyers. They are here to be your advocates during our stay in the imperial city and help you steer away from trouble with both your clan, my clan and the imperial household. listen to them. They are here to help you."

Drasta points to her ears. Seems they are all there.

Furi laughs. “It’s not about your ears. It’s about delicate matters at the palace. In the imperial city you will see other elves working in the city and at the palace. Not many but a few. We are well used to your kind. You see there is conflict between the imperial house and Barasume momentarily. You are my temporary besshikime. So, I must ask where does your loyalty stand at this moment? You must also understand that Kyo and the rest of Barasume will have no ill will against you if you do your job properly for me. They and I expect you to do your job. I simply outmaneuvered and surprised them by having you be retained by me.”

“My loyalty is to Miwa Gozen in the entirety. Though I am uncertain with whispers of me being the enemy amongst two earlier as they spoke.”

"And that is the crux of the situation. Be assured I have the best of intentions for your lady to be."

“I must ask why they whisper what they do?”

"You are the enemy in their eyes for the moment. For now, you are an advocate for the imperial family against the wishes of lord and lady Barasume. When this is over you will go back to your duties and there will be no ill will. That is unless you break your loyalty to me.”

Kazuhiko speaks. "That is truth in the eyes of Kozakurian law, elven. you are a momentary enemy of my clan but must do your best to promote and help Furi in her goals as her besshikime."

Drasta unsure says, “May I ask why this is?”

Furi says, "Because this is your assigned duty. I will speak to you on specifics when we are alone. but I want you to keep your eye on Yoshie and those around her."

Takeo speaks. "The two of us will help steer you clear of any legal matters. If you do not know if something is within the law, ask us. You do not have to carry out any orders that break the laws of besshikime or clan law if she asks."

Drasta responds, “Perhaps I would hope she not do so then.”

Furi nods, "I will do my best. I already have a lot of information on both subjects in these matters. However, your continued help will be needed to have the emperor’s wishes come true. The emperor even if a god is still subject to the law. Ultimately the matter at hand are Kyo's and Yoshie’s to make. It is up to us to change their minds on the matter. It is a hard position to take but one that can be won with your knowledge and some listening at doors.

Drasta thinks and says, “I would ask you to be plain in what you ask of me then.”

"I will be asking for various things. I want you to spy on the happenings of Yoshie and her people. I wish for you to give me more information on both Hideo and Miwa.

I think you can see for yourself that Hideo needs a strong serious woman as a 1rst wife. One that can defend both him and his clan with both her sword and her occupation. It will ultimately make your clan stronger. Kyo and Yoshie do not see it that way. They want to use Miwa to gain more land and influence in the region and create more allied clans.

With Hideo they will have to give up land but can form an alliance in marriage with an equally strong clan. Barasume has already taken a major city and surrounding land. They need temperance. They are gaining territory and alliances to quickly and the emperor is very concerned."

Furi continues, "We must think of the next generation of your clan, Drasta. Think about Miwa’s strength behind Hideo. Think of what a woman of lesser stature would be like as a first wife. Someone like Eri."

Drasta replies, “I see, I know this task will not be easy with the way they speak...What am I allowed to do in these circumstances to get what you need?”

Takeo says, "You may infiltrate and look at files, but you may not steal them or anything else, you may overhear things. You may use your knowledge to help your mistress’s goals. If attacked, you may defend yourself but do not go out of your way to start a fight. The art of being a besshikime is to remain unnoticed.”

Drasta responds, “And magic?”

Kazuhiko says, “Yes you may use magic if you can but nothing obvious that would put you on the spot. No one should know if you use a potion of invisibility, and no one should catch you using it.”

Drasta nods, “I understand. I suggest you find an elf that can read sylvan…”

Furi says, "Even if you find Yoshie or any of Barasume being physically or magically attacked you may defend them too. This is not something of combat. This is a political thing. You are free to defend them too and besides the Barasume family are imperial guests. I would expect you to defend your brothers and sisters if needed except for their wishes on this subject. Do you understand Drasta?"

Takeo says, “I will find one.”

Drasta nods with a bit of anger, “I would not stand by if they were attacked, I would think that would be self-explained. She then nods to Takeo. “Good, it will be the only way for you to read my reports so no others can.”

Furi nods, "but understand your first loyalty is to me and my goals temporarily. I and the emperor should be first on your mind. Your clan is secondary now."

“I would prefer to talk with who you find as well before handing information to them. It is what I am asked at this time so I will do so...Though I do ask you to clear this after the task has been complete for the reason needed in some ways... Perhaps if it is needed.... I have spent much time trying to be a part of the people of this land to better my lady and know how to better protect her on the return.”

Furi nods. "And I would ask that Miwa Gozen never knows what goes on while we are at this task. It serves no purpose for her to know how or why her fate is negotiated and her future marriage. She is a knight and will follow the orders of her shogun if she survives her testing which I am confident based on her records that she will. Whether we win or we do not she never knows what will go on in the next few weeks.”

Drasta huffs with a smirk. “If you have ever seen her fight....There is no better war dance. As to your question. The ambassador will not know a word.”

Furi sighs "Being that there are ears now everywhere we will speak later on this. Kazuhiko. You will be staying by either my or Drasta's side from now on and will sleep in my room."

Drasta asks, “Perhaps best we occupy a double room one side for the ladies and the other for the men.”

Furi nods, “That is acceptable. Takeo is fully loyal to my clan.”

“Best be that then.” Drasta lightly chuckles.

Furi takes out a case and gives it to Drasta. She takes it lightly and looks curious. Inside are two Tessen. One steel ribbed and one iron rib. Several vials of poison, a dozen steel hair sticks. steel wire plated in gold that can be made into a hair band to put charms on, and a dozen or so daggers from 2 to ten-inch blades. Each fan has a +3-deflection bonus.

She looks them over carefully. “I see...starts placing every item in hidden pockets along her arms full length and legs pulling out a few unspecified daggers and darts placing them on the table then laces the fans one on each hip//there would be a small pile of half broken daggers and small blade forms on the table that may be surprising.

Furi smiles and corrects her. She takes the iron fan from her and puts it back in the case. She then puts the steel fan in its proper place in Drasta’s odi. “Now, now. Propriety Drasta. Let’s not get too excited. They are only court weapons every Besshikime of a major clan uses.”

Drasta next checks the small vials of poison. They are all non-lethal. She looks at Furi confused.

“You are still only a trainee, Drasta. You can’t have anything lethal until you pass your testing. I will be going out in an hour. Be at my door. Until then I release you.”

Drasta bows to her. Furi recognizes her with a smile. Drasta leaves to rest before she has to go back on duty.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

The morning is stiflingly humid as the group packs up and starts off into the mountain jungles of the highlands. As they walk the climate changes. Sei is familiar with the air. The terrain is very much like the deep valleys of his own homeland. Though the plants are different and there is no snow. It is a mountainous jungle filled with all the wonderful poisonous creatures slithering and walking underfoot.

As they travel, they see villages that are built among the trees instead of the ground. Huts surrounding the great trunks of trees high up to avoid all the insects. There are rope and board bridges everywhere at that level. When they begin to see them, they know they are coming close to a local town or hamlet.

Near dusk they find an inn in one of these villages as they talk to the locals. The people are a darker shade of skin color: Not the peachy white skin of a lowlander. The group also sees many dwarves around this area too. Dasta notes they are very different from the ones she is familiar with beyond the dragon wall.

After eating at the inn Yoshie speaks quietly to Ume. The besshikime goes over to Sei and whispers. “Yoshie would like to take a walk with you.” Sei joins Yoshie and her besshikime and they leave the place.

Furi tells Drasta, “Follow them and find out everything they say. Don’t get caught.”

She nods to Furi. “I will do what I can quietly.” Drasta gives them a few moments start, then quietly and carefully follows them sticking to the shadows and crevices. Anything that would keep her more hidden.

Yoshie and Sei go out to the platform bridges. Umi and Kei follow at a discreet distance. Sei sniffs the air… Yoshie seems to randomly roam around the bridges for ½ hour without speaking then says to Sei, "What are our assets, and information. How can we convince the emperor that Hideo and Miwa should marry into different clans? We need a solid plan, and we need to have answers for their counter positions." She speaks softly.

When there is no answer, she turns and looks at him. He seems preoccupied with something. She narrows her eyes. “What is it, Sei?”

Drasta keeps herself hidden away listening. Sei says, “We need to take this argument out of the space of power. This can’t be about power.”

She counters him but is quizzical. “I don’t see how this can be. marriage is about power...... or do you see something........have some argument or plan to take that way........somehow?"

"The power comes from pairing; it cannot be forced the other way. Ask yourself this: if you arrange a marriage for the sake of power but it destroys itself due to a bad pairing, what have you really accomplished?"

"The pairing will make alliances with other clans. which gives us more influence among all the clans. This is what we want. and what the emperor does not want. And we have one asset. By tradition it is Kyo's decision who these two will ultimately marry.

Do you really think that Miwa would be a good match for Hideo. We discussed this. Hideo’s other wives and concubines would be dead within a week or two by ‘mysterious accident’. She would run over him and may even displace him. It wouldn’t be the first time a wife did this with the right skills. Look peasants have a choice in marriage. Nobles do not. The nobility marries for wealth, power and influence."

Sei tries to swing her thoughts. “Very much not. Miwa needs to be paired with someone who has the ability their own self to respect her skill, as well as the caring and tenderness to support her through the storms of war Putting Miwa and Hideo together...that's a large ice block of a poultry entering a cauldron of boiling oil."

Drasta listens but only partially picks up the conversation. Though she does get most of it and is able to put most together thus far.

Yoshie stammers, “Then you agree with Kyo and I..........but as soon as we try the emperor, and his people will be angry unless we can convince them. When we marry her off it must be to a noble. preferably to another clan.

As for Hideo We need someone for him also preferably from another clan. Which will cement alliances with those clans. So how do we take the power out of the marriages? as you suggest?"

Sei rubs his face and says, “Maybe I should lead with a question for the emperor...?"

Yoshie tilts her head slightly watching him. “What would be the question.”

"Have you tried arranging a marriage in the past only to have it unravel...?"

Yoshie shakes her head. “"I do not think it will matter to the emperor if he feels a marriage or two marriages would upset the balance of the shogunates. Could distance help us? It may be a thought to marry Miwa to a clan in the far north or another island and buy a bride from an island or distant northern clan for Hideo. A proposal that may work?"

Sei looks slightly surprised by Yoshie’s insight. “"That could be useful, yes. Bring some different talents and viewpoints."

Yoshie nods. “It may be hard. We would have to find out eligible women and men from these regions or send people there to different courts."

"True, but worthwhile all the same." Sei continues. “Basically, the effort would be an investment in stability."
Yoshie plays the devil’s advocate. “Still if we suit a northern clan the emperor may think we are trying to surround him. We would have to convince him that this is not the case. If an island we would have to choose carefully so the emperor does not think we are expanding allies in that way either. But it could still work. Do you think this would be the best strategy for us? or do you think something would work better for us. How do you think we should proceed?"

"I think we could offer the emperor that he could choose whatever other clan he feels fit? Give him a sense of stake and control still?"

“For both?”

“Correct.”

"This would put the decision out of Kyo's hands He would not like that in the least. I don't know if I could convince my husband, Sei. Perhaps a shared agreement when the time comes. a negotiation between the emperor and us?"

Sei smiles. “Yes, I think that would be workable as well."

"Do you think we can convince the emperor of this?"

"I think that if we can convince him of the folly of trying to make a non-starter of a marriage work for political reasons, he'll be open to options."

"I think we will also need to use Hideo's and Miwa's skills and faults to make our points. Hideo is well Hideo. Miwa is an aggressive woman a former judge, lawyer and proven warrior but unproved in giving birth after five.... six years of marriage. and she has killed at least one of her husband’s lovers that we know of." She pulls a file out of her kimono. "Here is her full file for you to go over Sei?"

Sei looks the file over with a nod "As I said, someone who need someone with the skill to respect her own, yet also a caring and tender heart who can support her through the storms of war. She's certainly seen and faced much and bears more than the scars one can see upon her."

Drasta, in her hiding place hears all of that part of the conversation. Sei continues, “Hideo lacks the respect needed to support Miwa, and Miwa lacks the patience needed to guide Hideo."

Yoshie frowns. “"It is my fault. After Eiji and Hiro died..........I could not bear to lose another son. Kyo is right it was I who coddled him."

Sei sighs, “That does not matter now.”

She nods, “What do we do about Hideo? What kind of woman do we need for him so that the clan may stay strong after Kyo is gone? Any Ideas, Sei?”

When Yoshie gets no answer she says, "Think about it. We will talk later tomorrow." With that they start to walk back to the inn.

Drasta rushes back to the inn and to Furi. Furi looks at Kazuhiko and says, “You are excused.” He leaves and now it is only Drasta, Furi and Takeo in the room. Furi looks at the elf. “What did they say.”

Drasta goes over what was said with some apologies for not catching everything. She missed some of the beginning while she was setting up to listen. “It was difficult I had to keep my distance, especially with Sei's senses.”

As Sei and Yoshie are walking back to the in Sei suddenly says, “Hideo needs...a patient guide at this point in his life. We can only see what he grows into though."

Yoshie nods to this. As they continue Sei sees a form moving in the trees above them for just a second. It then vanishes. He knows they have been tailed. He sniffs the air and stops the group for a moment.

Back at the inn Furi responds to Drasta’s report. "This is going to be harder than we think. They are using logical counters."

Takeo says, "It could be a solid plan what are the ramifications?"

Furi thinks and then tells them, “Well if they marry these two to islanders it takes away the potential for war, almost. Some shoguns have quite large and competent navies. The bigger threat would be cornering markets and the ability to strangle the main islands."

Furi looks at Drasta, "your input?"

Takeo considers, "Barasume already has a 1/4 of the oat, wheat, rice and silk market under their banner. Silk is our major export."

Drasta shakes her head and smiles. “Their solution seems logical yet something of distaste may be seen by Kyo on this. It seems they may be going against his wishes in some way yet...It also seems like it is a way for Yoshie to keep her child safe and push away Lady Miwa without knowing if she is still the same person who was banished from these lands. How does one lift a feather from a bird without knowing the bird.”

Furi frowns a moment, "A tiger is still always a tiger. they may move in sunlight and shadow along the background to hide their stripes, but they are still there a predator waiting for the next kill. I sort of agree with her on this. The question is how do we convince them that Hideo is the best match for her. She is right by tradition it is Kyo's decision this we need to convince them not they us although if the emperor’s wishes are not met there very well be repercussions against the Barasume clan. Their expansionism needs to be put under heel."

Takeo looks at Drasta "You know her best now of all of us. How do we use your knowledge?"

Drast thinks. “Perhaps on our return Hideo will have learned from his training. Perhaps in the time before her return he will be able to handle....” Thinks a moment.

Sei looks at Yoshie who’s waiting for an explanation. He chuckles lightly. “Guess I will just have to deliver a surprise..."

Yoshie looks at him a bit confused. He continues. “I think I know who was skulking around in the bushes."
She looks at her besshikime and then at Sei. “We were tailed?”

"Aye. By Drasta" he just chuckles and shakes his head "I think I know what to do, though..."

"She turns back to Kei and Ume, "I cannot believe you two didn’t see her. 8 million this mission is important!"

Kei shrugs, "Might I remind you my matron you've always been better at sniffing out spies than we are."

Yoshie shakes her head. "We will go further next time."

Sei put in. "It was only by a chance trace of scent that I was even able to pick up on her presence at all."
Yoshie nods, "If you have a counter Sei use it to the best of your ability."

They make it back to the inn. Sei following Drast’s scent trail heads for where Furi and Drasta have been speaking.

Furi leans back in her chair. "Hideo must face trials within a year or Kyo will disown him. I believe he has everything covered in the non-marshal trials. it will be the marshal..............

Sei crashes the party. He opens the door roughly with arms wide open. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY DRASTA!" in full surprise-party-mode.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Drasta looks at Sei with a blank what the hell expression with some discomfort. “Fuck 128 already!”

Sei just smiles at Drasta. “128 years young, right?” He keeps the bit at least for the moment. Furi is looking at Sei in utter shock.

Drasta sighs a long-depressed sigh, “Yes young….”

Khzuro hears the loud commotion down the hallway of the inn.

Sei smiles a slick smile, “Now that that's out of the way, can we just get everyone together and talk? Get this conversation...out of the realm of power alone? Because making it into a power struggle serves nobody. Not Kyo, not the emperor, and nobody in this room either"

Drasta raises and eyebrow and looks to Furi repeating the word “Senses”.

Furi is still in shock. Nothing in Sei’s profile or the profile she built on him should she expect anything like this. Meanwhile Khzuro begins to walk toward the room to investigate. He finds Furi looking at Sei totally mystified. Drasta is there and one of her lawyers. Furi finally states. “This is…. This is Highly unusual… The emperor?”

Drasta seems a bit muffled, not quite knowing what to say. Sei states to Fury. "Like, I'm thinking if we all put our heads together, we can come up with something that manages to achieve the emperor's goals of not letting House Barasume outgrow the space available, if you will, while at the same time not trying to force Hideo and Miwa into a doomed attempt at being married together, no?"

Khzuro just watches Furi’s confused expression. She huffs, “Fine. Gather your advocates. I will gather mine. The kami sits in between. I will not have his unusual luck on your side of the table and no head rubs either."

"That sounds like a plan" Sei heads over to gather Yoshie and the rest of her entourage.

Drasta looks to Furi, “Not even one?” Furi stares daggers at Drasta. She half smirks, “Apologies.”

Khzuro looks incredibly saddened and discouraged by the lack of head pats takes his place in between, taking note of who sits near him.

Sei returns before long with his side assembled, "No head pats for the kami, by the way." to his side.

Kazuhiko goes to Sei's side, Takeo to Furi’s side and Drasta stays on Furi's side. Furi looks at Khzuro, "You sit, and no one touches you. I don’t want any higher advantage going to the Barasume."

Sei looks for a chalkboard and yells to the innkeeper for one. It takes some time but eventually one is found and placed to the side.

Takeo tells Sei, "She’s got a whole lot of information we do not, and she has Drasta who knows Miwa best." Yoshie comments, "Yes but we know Hideo."

Khzuro Whines! just listens quietly.

"Right. So, I'll start this off by putting my understanding of both sides' goals on the board, and then we can have Drasta put hers, or perhaps Furi if she'd rather do that instead?"

Furi smirks, "Let Drasta do it."

Khzuro raises an eye ridge, looking around, but while he does seem to be listening intently, he does seem to not have much interest or stake? or is just trying to figure out how to increase the amount of head pats received.

Furi does pull Drasta to the side a moment. She looks a bit oddly as in why she would know Furi’s goals enough to state them. Furi tells her, “Remember where your loyalty stands at the moment.” Drasta nods. The Onna-bugeisha then turns to Sei. “If Drasta miscommunicates our wishes I will correct the record."

Sei puts up on one side of the board "Don't mix boiling oil (Miwa) with frozen poultry (Hideo) -- bad marriage is bad for politics" "Support House growth" then on the other "Don't let House Barasume outgrow their space (house?)" before drawing a horizontal line and handing the writing instrument to Drasta.

She looks to Sei taking the chalk. “I know Miwa well enough for this to be simple yet difficult for most to understand at the same time.” She writes a few notes to the left of the board of what they have told her about Miwa then dissects each to the other side - Noting the feats on the islands she has done with merchants importing goods and exporting towards the top writing Patience and time next to it - Below she writes a short, detailed note of her ambassador status and the respect she has gained through time with a full stop thinking for a moment.

Khzuro just blinks confusedly at the marriage talk. “Kobolds don't work this way at all.”

Sei turns to him. “Think of it like dragons negotiating marriage.” Khzuro blinks confusedly some more.
Drasta tries to clear him up. “It’s simple Khzuro. Lady dragon gets her hoard to save and males hoard to spend.”

She then circles the word tiger stripes on the left of the board writing next to it "A tiger may always have stripes but given time those stripes may change." Under which she details out the political venture abroad for trading permissions and the amount of patience and time that had taken.

Moves under that line and describes her efforts to bring more peace than death to those around her in a confident manor and how she had grown to be less aggressive in her actions and that she has taken her time to learn first before striking out in haste Hmm...looks to Furi to see if there were anything she would add.

Sei reads Drasta's writings and tilts his head "An interesting chronicle of Miwa but I was more thinking of your understanding of what Kyo's and the Emperor's goals in this matter are."

Furi stands and says, “I'll put it bluntly. The Barasume clan has grown from a portion of the city of Renkyu to ruling the city in full and surrounding region in just one generation. These two being married one to another clan and one taking in woman from another clan makes this clan too big for its short clothes. and big enough to challenge the emperor himself. Therefore, we do not like the directions to which this would lead."

Sei steps up and erases Drasta's rather off-point writings, then addresses Furi "Perhaps it'd be best if you wrote up both the emperor’s goals, as you mentioned, and your understanding of Barasume's goals? It seems that Drasta's command of our writing proved not quite up to the task, not that I'm holding this against her though."

Furi stands and takes up the chalk. She writes, ‘It is the emperor’s wishes that Barasume Hideo marry Barasume Miwa for the good of the empire and to keep the balance of power between the shogunates.’
Sei nods "That's the Emperor's side, yes. Now as to your understanding of the House side?"

She writes, “The Barasume goal is to acquire more power through the marriage of Barasume Miwa and Barasume Hideo. Miwa will carry a hefty bride price for her status as Onna-mucha and an imperial ambassador which will enrich the Barasume clan with alliances and land Then they can turn around and Marry Barasume Hideo to a woman with a low bride price. a lady from a minor house on the outer islands carrying a low bride price and yet another alliance to the Barasume clan." She puts the chalk back on the table and returns to her seat.

Sei nods along slightly "You're writing the words 'balance of power' brought a question to my head...how much would a marriage to someone outside of Kozakura tip that balance, compared to marrying someone within these lands?"

He then looks back to his side "And by the way, if you have ideas, questions or the like, please chime in! I didn't bring everyone here to just be lumps on a log for me to lecture."

Yoshie looks up at him, “Please explain, Sei?”

Khzuro cranes his head, but so far doesn't interject. But listens along. and waits for head rubs with some disappointment that none are coming.

Sei with some disappointment states, “I'm trying to get the gears turning in everyone's heads here, get folks to come up with ideas that could maintain the balance of power without risking a marriage going ‘swoosh gesture’ all over our House's face."

Furi says, "A noble of the empire marrying a foreigner would be unheard of are you talking Hideo or Miwa?"

Sei nods, “More Miwa than Hideo, perhaps as a gesture of strengthening an ambassadorial tie."

Yoshie asks, “Sei may I speak with you in private."

Sei nods to Yoshie "We can step aside briefly then."

Yoshie takes him to another room. "What does our clan gain by arranging a marriage between a foreigner and Miwa?"

"I think that with the right foreigner, it could be a post of honor for Barasume, being entrusted to strengthen a bond with one of Kozakura's allies. Honor through service, if you will. It would require careful selection, of course, but could pay off richly in the long run."

"What about the bride price. there are not many who could pay it other than the great houses of the empire?"

"Coin may not be the greatest treasure in this, by far."

“And what of land?”

"We gain in the value of our own lands by helping build a stronger Kozakura."

She thinks about this for a very long time. "I am not sure what Kyo will think but please continue. If we do not bend somewhere there may be imperial repercussions on our clan."

"I think that we can make sacrifices of material to gain in spirit, no?"

" It may delay our clan in uniting all the empire. a few generations. but for the sake of clan now it may be a good plan. Are you ready then?"

Sei nods. They come back into the room. Yoshie sits back on her mat facing Furi. Sei looks around to see if there's someone else who wants to take the floor in this exercise. Furi has been thinking and talking to Takeo. Khzuro just keeps quiet. Drasta is making notes in her journal gauging and watching everyone speak.

Furi speaks, "If such a marriage were to occur as drastic a proposition as it is. Lady Miwa would fall directly under the imperial flag for the rest of her life. Not the Barasume clan. You do understand that?"

Sei looks to the rest of the folks on his side to make sure they got that point. Yoshie and Kazuhiko both nod.

Drasta stops writing abruptly and starts listening intensely.

Furi then asks, "And what of Hideo?"

"That would be a more difficult matter, given how much he is rough clay or green boughs of wood at the moment. I reckon it may be best to keep working with him for now, perhaps to give him a clearer idea of what he needs to grow into. 'Tis one of the perils of passing leadership down through the blood, you see.... the skills don't always transfer so readily." Sei explains.

Furi twist her lips slightly. "When it is time for him to marry, we would wish the Barasume clan come back to the table for a discussion with the emperor’s representatives."

"I think that that would be more than acceptable." Sei looks back to his delegation.

Furi asks, "Another question. I do not believe the shogun has ever even been abroad. Who will arrange a marriage to lady Miwa and a foreign noble?"

Sei shrugs, “That is a good question indeed, I would not know for sure" glancing around the room "Anyone have ideas on this?"

Furi says, "prospected mates should be interviewed by both the Emperor and Shogun Barasume. Lord Barasume should have the last word as tradition dictates."

“That makes sense.” Sei quietly says.

Furi nods, "I will take this proposal to my cousin." She looks at Khzuro, "The no head pats is rescinded at least temporarily."

Sei looks at everyone, “Anything else before we wrap this up?”

Khzuro gives a silent nod to Furi. “Hooray!

Furi says, "There are still three more days to the imperial city. I’m sure I'll think of something."

Sei looks back at Yoshie while speaking to Furi. “"I'm just glad we were able to work something out."

Furi nods, “Perhaps.” She then turns to Drasta, “You are released for the rest of the night. I have to write several letters."

Drasta bows, “As you wish.”

The gathering disbands. Drasta goes to find a quiet table to have a much-needed drink, but Sei pulls her and Khzuro aside, Addressing Drasta he says, “Just to note, I have no idea if today's actually your birthday or not, the birthday thing was an act to keep folks' tempers from flaring up to the point where I couldn't have gotten everyone in the same room together. I hope you didn't mind the minor leg-pull though."

Khzuro raises an eye ridge, then looks between Sei and Drasta "More mammal politics things?"

"Indeed, it was that. It makes me wonder if dragon politics is somehow less complicated?" to Khzuro.

Drasta chuckles, “I thought it would be fun to encourage you so your head might stay attached.”

Khzuro explains, “Often, yes. They have their mandates they must fulfill. They are fulfilled. They have greater purpose. Less petty squabbling."

"Aye, greater purpose is a good thing for all of us, whether we have scales or hair.” Sei muses.

"This one also notices there is a lot of squabbling regarding mating pairs. This one doesn't fully understand the point. More politics than increasing the tribe size. Is very odd and inefficient."

Drasta nods, “It is in their own way.”

Khzuro sighs shaking his head, “Suppose it does still have greater implications, given those involved. Have you heard of Hideo's behavior improving at all?"

Drasta thinks and worries, “I believe they may find it difficult if they propose this to a western noble though.”

Khzuro has an insight. “Indeed. Expansion of complications to involve foreign powers as well."

Sei nods, “Aye, it is both a great challenge and a great opportunity."

Khzuro looks a bit confused and asks, “Though... what this one doesn't get is why Miwa would even want to marry someone like Hideo. Is she entirely unaware of what he is like?"

Drasta looks down at Khzuro with a bit of sadness. “It is not for her to choose...This I know she has told me many times.”

"Oh..." Khzuro shrugs, “Well, odds are both of you know how to handle this matter better than this one, at least. Though this one only has their personal recollection of Hideo in regard to how suitable they are for such a position. Was not impressed."

“Hideo is a child still; he has been pampered and spoiled too much. I hope the training he endures makes him into a better person perhaps though perhaps that is too blunt...” Drasta replies.

A nod, while taking note, the kobold doesn't appear overly invested in the affair, though. Beyond that horrible mandate to not have head pats during the proceedings and decisions. Such is an outrage! After a pause "If your plan with the foreign noble doesn't work, do you have a backup plan?"

Sei frowns. “Sadly, not beyond simply convincing the emperor that marrying Hideo and Miwa just won't work."

Khzuro gives him a slow nod. "Will admit this affair is... not this one's highest priority. Though may need to know more about this for another matter..."

Drasta smiles, “Indeed.”

Khzuro continues. “That whole affair with that demon appearing and the strange magic takes higher priority."

She asks, “Have you heard from your demon as of late?”

“Yes.”

Time stops and the demon comes through the wall bearing his hourglass. He says, "You don’t always win against me." He disappears as the crystals fall.

Khzuro muzzle paws. "More taunts. Said.... 'We fight time after time' this time." He blinks, trying to take a VERY close look at the hourglass while the demon is there. ... "Just happened again." He notes that the bottom of the hourglass has tiny white and black crystal rimming the side. On the bottom is some form of formula written on it. Which seems somehow geometric. It almost looks like a gyro part.

He thinks hard and says, “Think it's like it's saying we've fought already in different timelines, or will, or however this time magic works." A huff... "Or does it fight and re-wind time until it wins... Always comes through a wall to taunt this one too.”

Drasta places her book in front of Khzuro and writes what was said under the other lines she was told.

Khzuro makes a breath out loudly, considering, “Not even sure how this thing can be stopped. Or what it's trying to do."

Drasta asks, “What do you mean rewind time?”

Khzuro looks up as if trying to figure it out. "Thinking of like... demon fights a battle, loses, goes back in time, tries again. Fights again. Maybe different tactics or approaches. Loses again. Goes back in time again. Keeps doing so until they win.

Not even sure if that is possible. It sounds like this one and the demon already have or will battle multiple times. Or however it works with this time magic. This one still doesn't know how it even works, what limitations it has if it has any. It's likely tied to that hourglass it has. But then again... how such an artifact works, this one has found nothing."

“So, it would seem he is looking for a different end to this outcome.”

"Maybe... this one doesn't know what it is truly after. Stopping time for small pieces at a time and taunting this one seems entirely unnecessary to any sensible goal, unless it is to draw this one to him. But why do that? Then again, cannot expect sense from demons."

Drasta taps her fingers on her chin. “At time's they can make sense though it is for their own gain.” She studies the lines a bit while they are talking thinking, ‘Curious though why he would have so many short messages.’

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

After the meeting runners are sent out both to the imperial city and to the Barasume castle. That night when everyone is asleep Khzuro suddenly awakes. The demon seems to be sitting in an invisible chair. He’s holding the hourglass in his left hand. He says, “You are my adversary.”

In the morning everyone rides the day. The group stops early at about 4pm. They make camp high in the mountains for the night. Yoshie calls Sei to her tent along with Khzuro.

Sei turns up with a bow, “Hello there.” Yoshie recognizes him and waits for Khzuro. As he arrives Yoshie tells the pair to come with her. They walk out of the camp’s defensive line. Both Sei and Khzuro see other high Barasume officials start to walk out of camp as they do.

As Furi sees people start to leave she tells Drasta, “Find out what they are doing.” Drasta nods to her, goes behind a tree and seems to vanish.

Yoshie leads them down a worn path into the jungle to a shine of a local god. Ogano, Hideo, Kei, Ume, Haru, and Samo are all there. As they gather Ogano opens a portal. After a few minutes Kyo steps through it. Everyone bows. He recognizes them. Drasta tailing the group finds a dark area of forest and sets up to listen.

Khzuro quietly watches. Listening closely to what is about to occur. Everyone stays standing. Kyo starts off. “We have several things we must do in the imperial city, and two major situations from what I hear. Pleas relax. We just need to speak all together on the plans for the future.” He stops and collects himself then continues. “Hideo will be eligible for marriage in two years. He needs to meet others so there will be occasioned to do so. This is normal and minor. However, if you do not pass trials young man you will go no further in life."

Sei, you have come up with a compromise with the emperor’s representatives that has been creative.
I applaud your efforts. However, when the meeting with the emperor comes, we must make our comes, too. We need something from this.......negotiation. What are your ideas?”

"The gains are...less in coin and land and more in prestige, the name Barasume known for faithful service to our Emperor"

We will get plenty of money from the bride price, but we made concessions to the emperor. We need something for that. Support, trade deals.... something? But again, I applaud and approve of your compromise. We just need something written down that assures our place in the shogunate.”

Sei suddenly says, “I reckon that the visibility and status granted to us will be a boon in trade, no?"

Kyo grunts, "Perhaps." What are the rules to this?"

"The details will still have to be hammered out, true"

“Alright then. What is the plan? How do we as a clan control this as much as possible when the contract is made with the emperor.”

"That we will have to see, much of it depends on the emperor’s reaction"

Yoshie says. "It would be in our best interest to make sure we need to approve of any marriage."

Sei affirms, “That would be a good idea, yes."

Kyo nods, "Other ideas?" When no one answers Kyo grunts, "We are giving the emperor potentially one of our best weapons in war. Ideas?" He looks down at Khzuro. "What do you think little one?"

Khzuro looks up to Kyo, giving a shrug "This is... not an affair this one is particularly familiar with. Probably best this one leaves it to others." Despite reading about them, the kobold still finds human mating customs extremely strange.

Kyo looks at Sei, "Work on it, Sei. You have my trust. Now this demon. What do we know about it?"

"That... this one can probably help with." A heavy sigh, Khzuro interjects "It does seem focused on this one, seems like it's targeted this one as a... rival, or adversary. Not sure why this one was chosen yet. But it meddles in ancient magics." A pause "Did you have more specific questions about it?"

“From what Ogano told me this being can stop time?”

"It can, yes. It has some kind of... magic hourglass. An artifact that it uses to tamper with time. Admittedly this one doesn't know of the artifact's full capabilities, nor how well the demon can truly control it. Is dangerous regardless."

“If clan Barasume solves this mystery, how will it sit with the emperor. Perhaps we will have more negotiating power with him?”

Khzuro seems to have an unimpressed glare at that "Stopping this demon is more important than political maneuvering. This one knows a confrontation is inevitable."

Kyo looks at him. "I do agree with you of course little one. But one must seize an opportunity when it presents itself."

Khzuro doesn't respond. He just keeps that koboldly look. The tail twitches to the side some in suppressed agitation. Though one more familiar with kobolds could tell he definitely doesn't approve.
But after some awkward silence, he speaks up again "Did you have further questions for this one?"

Kyo nods. "I will give you full use of my retainers......any you wish for this mission. It is important for the whole of Toril and our clan."

Khzuro dips his head. “Of course, this one gives thanks.”

“Nothing is random, Khzuro. The gods have brought us together for a reason. This maybe it.
I leave you all to your missions then. Be at peace.” He nods to Ogano who reopens the portal. Kyo steps through.

Drasta slips back from her hiding place and makes it back to Furi unobserved. As she does the Barasume retainers gather. Ogano speaks first to Khzuro. “You of course have my services in this endeavor.”

"Of course. It's visited me a few more times, should tell you what it said..." Khzuro updates Ogano on the new messages that the demon has taunted him with.

Ogano thinks about it. “The message seems to be backward.”

A slow nod, considering "This one... had their suspicions. Wasn't fully sure of it... but... if it is indeed backward, then that would make the first message to this one their last one... which was them being frustrated by not being able to properly control the hourglass.

‘I must get it to work’, They said, so if so... maybe there's a mistake they make, or will make, when using it..." A sigh... "But we still don't know what the demon will actually /do/, though... beyond just sending taunts to this one and making time stop every so often."

Ogano mentions, "I saw the seeming look of displeasure. Think of our Shogun as you would a chief of your clan. He lives and breathes to make the clan flourish and wishes to put all of Kozakura under the Barasume banner even though he knows it will not be in his lifetime. As all shoguns do."

Khzuro looks up to Ogano, raising an eye ridge, but listens. "Oh, I know he is not a good man, but neither is he a bad one. He has shown great restraint and mercy in the past and when things get hard....He does not shy away from the hard things either. The good thing is. He is what you see. He never clouds himself or his intentions."

A slow nod... "Fair... think that stopping this demon should take priority. Still am not sure of what it intends to do more... tangibly. Not even sure why it's sending taunts to this one in the first place. Have thought about that. Or what it's trying to do with stopping time like it has. Although if the messages are backwards, then, am thinking his control of the artifact is shaky at best. His stopping time may be accidental rather than intentional."

"I would ask a priest on that for more. I think you will fight him in the future, that is what he experienced so he has gone into the past, if the hourglass lets him do that, to dissuade and throw you off. It is what someone would do if they already knew their enemy."

"That... makes sense." A slow nod, considering.”

Yoshie steps back out of the conversation and calls Sei over to her. “You have this? You can make the best deal for clan Barasume?"

"I reckon so, even if it may take some patience to bear full fruit."

Yoshie considers, "I would like you to give me a report on both Miwa and Hideo. What kind of woman or man does each need from a husband and wife. It will help with this I think."

"I can do that no problem for Miwa at least. Hideo though...it is hard to tell given how much he needs to grow before he is ready for such"

"Yoshie nods, He will have to grow living with the samurai. His studies in the non-combat arts are growing now at least. He is much more important than Miwa for the clan. We will eventually benefit from her marriage especially if the noble she marries is a trader of goods. Concentrate on him the most. please."

Drasta finds Furi eating by a campfire. She stands. Honorifics are exchanged. Drasta fills her in on all that was talked about. Furi smiles and shakes her head. “It seems Sei is on the emperor' s side of the agreement. He needs to learn a lot.”

“It would seem so.”

“I think I will be able to handle him then Drasta. Good work.”

It gets dark. Sei has a dream.

He dreams of a snow leopard following tracks in the snow. It mews several times while following them. His mews are met with silence. The large cat continues its journey by scent and track.

Khzuro also gets a visit during the night. He sees the demon shake the hourglass with delight. He says to no one. “I see its full potential” He then looks at the kobold and says, “Hello Khzuro, we meet again.”

He furrows his brow, looking at the demon. “Meet again…?” The demon disappears. Khzuro looks over, pondering if he might have encountered the demon before, before letting out a heavy sigh.
He takes out his notebook and writes the next message. He then turns it upside down. It says,

Hello Khzuro, we meet again.
You are my adversary.
You don’t always win against me.
We fight time after time.
It’s always different.
Why is that?
Is it a split in reality?
Is reality just a myth?
Only she knows.
Only she truly understood.
Too bad she has been dead almost 4,000 years.
Yet she lives.
How can this be?
Does it really matter at all?
Bear in mind I already know your plans.
I have the advantage, Khzuro
After all, is not life only a struggle for power over others?
I await our confrontation.
I’ll endeavor to make it interesting.

In the morning Sei gets a letter. The letter appoints him Hatamoto and gives him the lake village to rule over when all is done with his meeting with the emperor. Also, a stipend to build a home for him, his child and Kinu when he chooses to retire from service.

The rest of the journey is uneventful. They come to the imperial city of Dojyu. Population a ¼ million and the palace itself, which is its own large city.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

The Barasume clan holds their position for a day outside the imperial city to make sure everything is ready and proper. In the morning Drasta tries to put on her own make up. As she comes out of the tent her lawyer is there. He inspects her and immediately goes to see Furi.

Furi comes with him in a few moments. She takes one look at Drasta’s face and slaps her. “Never again! Do not taunt me!” She then walks away. Ume and Kei put their hands on their bellies, lean over and laugh at her.

Everyone prepares that day to come to the imperial court. The camp is busy with preparations, and everyone is tired by dusk. They sleep an uneventful and peaceful night. The next morning Drasta puts her clothes and makeup on bound and determined to get it right. When she comes out again the lawyer checks her and goes to Furi.

Again, Furi inspects the elf. This time more carefully. “Now that is a lady. Good job. Keep it up.”

Haru steps over as Furi leaves. She also carefully looks at her. Drasta watches her with respect, being quiet. "Keep it up. You will have to in the city, Drasta. This is the most important visit of your life."

“It’s a bit odd for me…”

"In time it will become second nature. Now", Haru gives her a quill and pen, "You will have to write many letters to her in the city. I want you to write a paragraph about Sei for me right now."

When Drasta finishes, Haru takes the paper and reads it.

She takes it when you are finished and reads it. "It is neither terrible nor good. Come to my room tomorrow night once arrangements are established. I'll help you study. Here is a book on Kanji. I want you to know it when you get to my room so study while riding and your duties."

Drasta nods and takes the book immediately, studying it while walking and going through the city. In turn she places a map into Haru’s hand of the library. Everyone gets to Dojyu. The Barasume clan rests for the day and the next night they will go to a ball in their honor.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

As the ball starts Yoshie invites Sei and Kinu with her. Hideo is dressed in his best attire and there are several young noblewomen there from 13 to 18 in attendance. All the young ladies are keyed on him. Khzuro is the talk of the party. He gets head pats and wishes all night. Drasta is sitting at Furi’s table with her. She is dress and has all her special weapons. She studies Hideo being patient in her place. Furi looks over and releases her saying. “You are welcome to talk to anyone here currently. It’s your ball.” Then the Onna-bugeisha studies what the elf does.

Khzuro enjoys all the head pats, basking in receiving all of them. Does try to listen into the gossip while enduring the head pats. Though does look for Haruki. He finds her sitting at a table alone with a bit of food and drink, most likely fruit juice. He knows she doesn’t drink any alcohol. Few speak to her and those that do leave in short order.

Sei is lingering in the background at Yoshie’s table. He keeps an eye on Hideo in particular. Hideo after a short time comes over to Yoshie’s table where Sei, Kinu and her two besshikime are at. Drasta meanwhile is also watching Hideo waiting for an opening.

Hideo clears his throat. “I umm. I just want to thank you, falconer.”

Sei bows, “You are welcome.”

“I umm don’t know what would have happened being married to that shrew of an aunt.”

"I think a shrew is an inapt choice of mammal to compare her to." Sei makes a small laugh.

Yoshie looks at him, "You are excused now Hideo and If I ever hear anything like that coming out of your mouth your father will hear about it."

Khzuro does on the side keep an ear open for any potential husbands for Haruki, if any seem like they'd be decent gentlemen. At least when not receiving head pats.

He sees several peasant administrators and artisans at the ball. He goes to work to both collect rumors and look for potential mates for her. Hideo leaves the table to go back to all the women interested in him. He picks one to dance with. As the table is watching him. Yoshie asks, “Sei? Do you have anything you would like to do here at the ball?”

Sei shakes his head and looks at Kinu who smiles back at him. Drasta takes the advantage following Hideo. When he releases the girl, he is with. She puts her hand out to him gesturing if he would like to dance. Several men are watching them. Her more than him. He accepts her as a partner, and they begin to dance.

Drasta not used to Kozakurian dance styles only does mediocre well, but Hideo is in fact a good dancer and leads her making her look more competent. She does her best watching his footing and keeping pace as best she can with a smile studying his form carefully for a change.

He suddenly asks, “Why are we dancing?”

“A formal dance is a good way to test one’s balance as well with how quickly they can move even if it were combat purposes...A small insight perhaps on your training. If one can dance well it can prove useful in many ways other than political balls and such...One could use this to their advantage on the battlefield if needed to avoid any incoming attacks...” she says in a hushed voice.

He nods then looks around while dancing then passes Drasta off to a woman who has several scars. He takes up her partner a young noblewoman of 16. The woman she is with now is about 5 ft 2. And about 29 years old.

Khzuro carefully studies all the peasant administrators. They are doing everything from dancing to eating, from sitting to discussing topics. Their ages are anywhere between 25 to 50. He tries to gather general information on if there is anyone interesting among the peasants. He knows that Haruki is around 30 years old, but her mind is much younger than that. He does want someone age appropriate from what he consider.

He starts to mingle with them. He tries to gage them by taking note of what wishes they make when they give him head pats. And of course to get more head pats.

Drasta dances with her lady as well as trying to listen to any important conversation happening at Sei’s table. She hears a voice. “What pretty pronounced ears even for an elven, dear. What is your name?"

Drasta has to look down a bit to focus on the woman she is dancing with. “Drasta. And yours is lady…”

The small woman smiles, “I am the lady Tomowick, Ren.”

She gently nods quietly speaking, “I would assume you are a warrior of some sort, no?”

"Why yes. I am the second in command of my clan after another lady. it is a most honored position."

Drasta smiles slightly, “That is wonderful is it not?”

"It is. I am still unmarried though. but am looking. I understand you are to be a besshikime?"

“Yes, that is my goal in a short time.”

"And who will your matron be? Furi?" Drasta shakes her head. “Ah someone else under the imperial mon then?"

She smirks slightly and whispers, “No it is a Shinto lady.”

"Shinto is an old clan, much honored for their neutrality in the affairs of the shogunate. Do you believe you will be staying in the imperial city for long lengths of time?"

“For now, perhaps until I am released then I will return to my lady in another place.”

"Another place?"

Drasta nods, still talking in a quiet voice. “My hummingbird is still on her journey proving her return to this place.”

The onna-bugeisha smiles, “"A lady far away from home. Does that mean you are free to pillow?"

Drasta arches her brow slightly and chuckles then gives a glance to Furi for a moment to see her response to what she is doing. She sees Furi is far away but still watching her. she half smirks, “Perhaps my love would not mind this and my lady also approve in some ways...the two are very different in their approvals.”

Ren smiles, “It is of course your decision. We Kozakurians are quite free in some regards. Not like what I have heard of the west."

Drasta, still dancing delicately asks, “What have you heard?”

"I have heard that the west is quite repressed in regard to pleasure. That men often waste themselves away with no outlet and that women are treated poorly in regard to being with other women even when not married."

Drasta chuckles a bit, “We have many brothels in the west even for married men who pay coin.”

"As in every place I would imagine. Perhaps the west is not the place I have heard of. Is it like here?"

“In some ways but perhaps less strict on some laws...Though it is a delight in some situations to see some differences.”

“Shall we depart for the eve then?"

“I am unsure if it is time for this though I will find you when it is.”

Ren nods and hands Drasta off to a man.

Khzuro floats around while keeping his eye on Haruki. Many come to him to rub his head and make wishes. He pays particular attention to the people and what they ask for. Many ask for success in career, money, a few for the praise of the 8 million, also a few ask for peace as they go through life.

Khzuro focuses and listens more closely to the ones who seek peace through life, and the ones who see praise of the 8 million. There are 4 and 2 of them. Of the 4 that want peace one looks about in his mid-20s. He’s a bookish type with spectacles, one of the junior historians of the palace. The 2nd looks in his early 30s. He’s a philosophy instructor for one of the local colleges. One looks in his early 40s. He seems to be a reserved fellow in monk’s attire. The last looks in his early 50s and has the air of a lawyer about him.

Of the 2 who seek the praise of the 8 million: One is obviously a priest of an air elemental god. The other is in his early 40s and is an accountant by his official robes which he is wearing at the time.

Drasta spends a moment dancing with her man assuming he doesn’t stop talking. He asks, “Ah a young elf. What’s your name pretty girl?”

She smiles gently, “Drasta”, while glancing over to Khzuro a moment then quickly looking back.

“I am samurai apprentice Daichi in service to the emperor and archer…mostly at the moment.”

“That is interesting is it not?”

“Well, it's mostly walking up and down walls at the palace in rain, snow, sun, fending off dragons, Kirin, vampires, and goblins that want to scale our walls". He smiles jokingly, "Had to let my arrows fly at a giant lizard that breathed blue fire. It tried stepping on the palace. I hit him in his pinky toe. He roared and went back under the sea.”

“Ahh how marvelous then perhaps at a time you would interest me in an archery challenge then.”

" Well, I've never known a besshikime to wield a bow. That would be interesting to say the least."

She shyly smirks and looks at Furi. “Perhaps I will show you something you will not forget then.”

“We would have to have bets of course.”

“What would your bet be then?”

"Well now I've never had the pleasure of bedding an elven girl. Exotic and would be the talk of the barracks." Drasta chuckles. “And yours? My elven lass?”

She half smirks, “Your undying service to the wolverine and all your secrets.” She places a hand on his cheek gently staring into his eyes with ambition.

The samurai questions, "Isn’t the wolverine banished?"

“At this time yes. But she is my Lady.”

“Yet you wear Furi's mon?"

“At this time yes. I am under training.”

“"Well, if the wolverine becomes part of the imperial household, then I could perhaps get myself under her station. She is a legend in the south.”

Drasta snickers a bit. “In what way is she a legend tell me how this could benefit the imperial house?”

"One of the two or three best onna-musha in the south? She’s taken more heads than most men in battle."
“I see is there more reason?”

"Well to train under such marshal prowess. There would be few given the opportunity. my lovely elven."

Drasta smiles, “I do not train under her...She sent me to train your ways and patience.... Perhaps it would be difficult for her to return with one such as myself who has no formal training.” She looks at Furi. “Perhaps My legs are tired for now I may take a moment to rest.” She places a hand again on his cheek. “You be well and study until our challenge.”

Furi nods to her. There are several open chairs at her table. Drasta leaves the man on the dance floor and heads to the table. She is not interrupted.

Furi looks up at her. "I expect you to be dressed properly in the morning and not stinking of sweat and other odors. Tomorrow you will be guarding me in my room. No trances or sleep or whatever you do."

“In a trance I am still awake.... I still see everything Lady Furi.” Furi looks up at her and goes back to her notes. Drasta places a hand on the table in front of her book. “I have no interest in this lady or this man unless you need me to...”

"That is up to you Drasta. I will not interfere with good hearted fun. “You are dismissed until morning."

She sighs a bit and murmurs, “It is not fun unless you find something you need. She heads to Khzuro and Haruki.”

Khzuro takes an interest in the bookish fellow with the spectacles and the philosophy instructor. The young man looks down at Khzuro, “Hello again, Kami. You have quite the crowd gathered round you tonight."

Khzuro chuckles in turn. “Ah, it happens. Not many have seen one of my kind up close in person before. Am hoping the night has been treating you well."

The young man looks around. "It’s a party for another clan. We have one every few weeks. I’m not one for much partying but the library needs someone here to record it. I can’t even dance very well."

"That's fair. Ah... what do you prefer doing if not partying?" Khzuro cranes his head but doesn't really know enough subtle clues to determine if he's with another lady or not.

The young man chuckles, "Well....I like to read......seek out truth behind what lies on the page. I like to walk too. Just walk. It relaxes me."

A slow nod "I see. I ah... take it you prefer solitude and silence then? And... maybe a few library patrons here and there? Hopefully most are good company."

He laughs" most are wizards and wizardess’s more interested in their books than anything. There are a few regular folks. I try to help them find what they need in the great library, sometimes we have groups. We have a few farmer and fisher groups that like to debate on things like seed, soil, the best fishing grounds, migrations. most would be bored. I am fascinated by such things.”

Khzuro nods, “It is a worthy topic of discussion for sure, they do have a large responsibility to keep everyone fed, after all. Plus am sure it is not so simple as many others would like to believe."

The young man nods, "I am not sure if you know but these are the people that hold much influence in the nation. We consider are farmer and fishers the most important people. They have their own councils and can even defy the samurai and make inquiry to their daimyo. They are our middle class and rightly so."

Again, Khzuro carefully considers and listens. “That... does make sense," A slow nod, considering, Khzuro tries to read if something along this was the peace he was looking for, but he doesn't know human signals well enough to read that non-verbally "All parts must function well to make the whole work, after all." A nod, considers, then a pause.

The young man nods, "So say the gods. There is always something missing though something out of reach. I just can’t put my finger on it."

Khzuro cranes his head, considering "What do you mean? Like... something not working quiet, right? Or was it something you were more specifically looking for yourself?"

The young man looks apprehensive, "I meant my own life is all."

Khzuro gives that some thought. “Ah... I see." A pause "Um... how many people do you tend to meet outside your ah... rounds at the library? And um, were you looking for company?" Khzuro checks on Haruki. She is alone at her table. Some men have approached her, but she is very shy. They seem to leave quickly.

The young man looks up. “What do you mean?”

"Ah, was wondering if you were interested in meeting others, I mean, maybe someone here could help if you feel something's missing?" A glance aside to Haruki, taking note.

Drasta goes to sit next to Haruki walking by Khzuro patting him on the head.

The young man thinks for a moment. "I'm not very good with crowds but if it’s just a few, I'll join.”

"Just one," Goes to try to semi-discretely lead him towards Haruki.

Drasta sits herself close by sighing and looking at Haruki. The young man bows deeply to Haruki. She gets up and recognizes him. Haruki suddenly looks uncomfortable and so does the young man.
