Seryne and Randyl Vail - A letter to their cousin

Dear Krystine,

I hope this letter finds you well. Is Uncle Martin still keeping you shut up indoors with all those books? How are the music lessons going? Remember, you have the honor of the Vail family to uphold. Can’t be like your vagabond uncle, Jonathan, and that Damaran witch he married. Or those dreadful twin children of theirs.

You know, now that I think on it, I really can’t blame Grandfather Vail for practically disowning dad. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to explain to the noble families of Mirabar that your son is a half-dragon and his wife is a magically conceived half-vampire.

Well, on to my news. First of all, Randyl and I are doing just fine out here in the “wild.” We’ve settled into a place called Lapis Port. And you wouldn’t believe what kinds of adventures we’ve found since we came here. You remember our fey’ri sword master Amilielia, right? And you remember how she said that she had traveled here from a future where her mother, Ammothrawen, was captured and eventually sacrificed herself and the drow had taken over and all that? Well, shortly after Randyl and I arrived in Lapis Port, we found out that Ammothrawen had indeed been captured, and Randyl and I got to help in the rescue effort. We even met baby Amilielia (and let me tell you just how weird THAT was). And we helped thwart the drow plans. Next time I see our Amilielia, I’ll have a lot of questions for her. I mean, she never specifically sent us to Lapis Port, but now that I look back, I really have to wonder about some things. Particularly her timing in convincing Mom and Dad that we needed to get out from under their shadow and travel on our own.

Oh, and I’ve managed to become a half-dragon, just like Dad. In fact, I think I may be even stronger than him now. You can barely tell that Randyl and I are twins, what with my scales and wings and all. He took our mother’s path and is now a very powerful sorcerer. I like to tease him about how physically weak he is, but since he can kill with just a few words, I don’t push him too far. We mostly wander around helping those we can and fighting the drow whenever they show their wicked faces. The greatsword that Amilielia forged me still serves me well. While I hold it, I fear nothing.

Randyl says hello and is sorry that he doesn’t write you himself, but he leaves the writing duties to me. I guess that is fair since I make him do all the talking for us around here. Give my love to my uncle and tell him he should stop being a stick in the mud and let you get your nose out of a book once in a while.

With love,

Seryne Vail

(Written in more messy handwriting beneath)
I’ll write eventually, really!

Randyl Vail
