Sanctuary lore

The escape from Fort Flame

We fought with honour. We fought with discipline. But when the Poscador reinforcements arrived, we were heavily outnumbered. Many of our comrades fell that day.
Our retreat was tactical, and in the face of certain defeat it was just. We discovered an unguarded opening in their lines. Most of our battered company made it through before the Poscador elves discovered our manoeuvre.
Now the way to the west lay open to us, and our retreat was a speedy one, leaving most of our heavy gear behind.
They could only follow with smaller groups, and finally we escaped them altogether.

Mt. Mercy and the Maiden warriors

We fled through what seemed like endless hostile territory, until we reached the foothills of a mountain that must have demarcated the boundaries of the elven lands. At least we saw no Poscador patrols after that.
Lt. Hansen, now our senior ranking officer, told everybody: “This must be our mountain of mercy”.
But soon the sky was darkened by vast numbers of strange flying creatures. A group of them approached us and demanded to see our leader. They were all females with shining dark hair, fair skin and blue eyes. Their clothing was black, and they all had wings covered with raven-dark feathers. Their blades shone with a dark red magical aura.
Some of them spoke common fairly well. At first they thought we were an elven patrol, but they soon realized we were human and enemies of the Poscadors, just like them. They agreed to let us through if we were willing to take part in a raid against the elves.
We formed a military alliance that day. Over the years it has become more of a union.

Sanctuary Fields

West of the Mercy Mountain, are soft rolling fields so green
The people of different places, among them all races are seen
Culture and commerce is thriving, growing from outside and within

West of the land lies the unknown, so vast who knows where it does end
Before that the Empty City, now home of the Flaming Fist men
Plague or bad magic says rumours, who knows where the citizens went

Sanctuary City

We heard stories about an abandoned city. There were rumours of a plague and others of bad magic explaining why the city was abandoned. We searched the region, asking about. We found out that nobody had dared to approach the place fearing the “curse of the city”. The place had been abandoned for 20, maybe 30 years.
And one day, we found the city in the western part of the plains. The city had high walls made from stone. The colour of the stone was unusual, almost as lit by a setting sun.
We forced the gate open and sent a patrol inside. The city was indeed empty. There were buildings witnessing of an advanced civilization, like in the greater cities on the mainland. But we found no signs of what had happened here. We searched the city for documents or literature that could explain what had happened, but we found nothing. We also asked in the towns nearby. But we still know little about who the citizens were. What happened to them, and if they will ever return remains a mystery.
Anyway, we made the city our new home and named it Sanctuary.
Our bravery in entering the city has earned us respect and given us a high standing among the people here. We have formed a strong political and military union between the different people in the Mt. Mercy/Sanctuary region where Sanctuary has become the capital city. Our united forces defend against our enemies; the Poscadors, raiding bandit clans and random groups of so called “adventurers” who seek fame and our fortune.

Possible mineral deposits at Mt. Mercy

Our geologist expedition from Lapis Port to the western regions had to return in a hurry after being attacked by bands of wild elves. Our analyses so far indicate a high possibility of finding rich deposits of valuable minerals in the mountains west of the elven territories. The mountain that some of the locals call “Mt. Mercy” is an especially promising site.
