Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

Drasta does her various temple duties. This day it is at one of the temples of the Path of enlightenment. About 3pm she is called into meditation with the monks and the single male priest in the front room. It just so happens Khzuro who also worships the path comes to the temple to pay his own respects.

Upon seeing the kobold, the priest himself invites Khzuro over to sit with him and meditate. He politely accepts, (While his kin have the correct version, their own version of these traditions) remaining polite and respectful.

The priest is accepting being that the path has many practitioners across all of Kura-tur all with their own regional versions of prayer and meditations. Meanwhile Drasta sits, legs crossed with her eyes closed enjoying the quiet in an almost trancelike state.

After an hour and a half most leave to do their chores. The priest stays and motions Drasta over to sit with Khzuro and himself. She moves over to where she has been requested and sits in the same position. The priest breaks his meditation and looks at Drasta. “You seem troubled. Is there something a humble priest may help you with?”

“There are many troubles. Yet I do not think you could alleviate them.”

He smiles, “My place is not to alleviate your troubles. It is more to help guide you to find the answers to those troubles for yourself. I am but a candle that will help you see into the darkness to which you must face. A helping hand.”

I have come to be better for a friend, yet I find it difficult to find any who would see me other than a outsider or monster. Perhaps You could give some thought on this. Thinks about what she said for a moment and places a candle on the floor in its own dish.

"Ah direction. good. It is a difficult task to integrate with the people of the lands here. They tend to be somewhat isolationist. Their customs and rituals are hard sometimes too divine, and they tend to be an unforgiving lot. Still, you give them the opportunity and you will find grace among the people they will eventually accept you. How does one harden and temper a blade?"

“I am no blacksmith, but I would think patience.”

"Hardening is easy. You bring the steel to the right glow and dunk it in cool water. it instantly hardens. But tempering that is another thing all together. You bring the heat up slowly, methodically until the whole of it is just the right color from tip to pommel iron. If done correctly it takes hours of very slow heating, then you quench it. You expect people to accept you within a few weeks or months, but they will not, and it frustrates you. think of it more as tempering step by step. win someone over then the next. then the next."

He looks at Khzuro. "Hello friend. Do you have a dragon?"

Khzuro looks up to the priest, but then shakes their head. "It's.... complicated." The priest chuckles and looks back to Drasta. She shrugs slightly and stares back.

He asks, “Have you found any friends here yet, Drasta?” Khzuro sighs in relief slightly. His dragon is a touchy subject to the kobold.

“I am unsure if I have earned any friendship other than the companions that trust in my skill.”

The priest frowns. “"That is somewhat concerning. Everyone even I need someone who I can lay my troubles too. Perhaps this is part of your troubles? Think about it. Is there some truth to this?"

“Perhaps in some ways, yes.”

"Well, I do hear that Haru is looking for 5 new recruits. Perhaps you will find a new student open to your friendship." Khzuro cranes his head, listening, but doesn’t comment.

“If perhaps I am still allowed to train with them after my last encounter perhaps that may be true...”

The priest closes his eyes and meditates for a minute or two, "It would be a good thing for you I think to have someone to share your thoughts and ideas with. Tell me, what is this friend like, that is caused you to want to come here to be a better person?" His eyes slide over to Khzuro. "And you little one. any troubles to put to the table?"

Drasta half smirks. “Many here know her. I know her to be stubborn and need a friend and someone to watch her back.”

"Ummm that tells me little. You are training for a besshikime position. I assume this woman is a noblewoman then?" Khzuro pauses, thinking a time and craning his head.”

“She is.”

The kobold finally speaks. “"Troubles? I suppose... there is what I have heard of how humans behave. The codes they follow. The code of Bushido. The path of enlightenment, the path laid by the celestial bureaucracy. Has seen... a lot more breaks from that than this one has expected in a short time, though. Is it the norm? Should this one be worried?"

"Ah, now that is a good question and one to which both of you would be well to know."

Khzuro nods, listening intently.

The priest starts. "First let us imagine who must and who does not have to follow the code of bushido?" Drasta raises and eyebrow listening.

"Only samurai must completely pledge themselves to the code. So many others do not have to. Most noblemen must know the code but not all are samurai and not all have to follow the code. Did both of you know this?” He looks between the two of them.

Drasta says, “No, yet I had suspect.” Khzuro however nods. He knew.

"Good. 2nd The code, like the path of enlightenment, is the highest pentacle one may attain. You don't just know it like the back of your hand when you are 15 or 18 it is more a path of ideas a samurai must follow to attain their own enlightenment within the code. a young samurai full of let us say gusto does not know the meaning of the code in their heart yet. It takes time, experience, and meditation to understand the codes depths.

You see this in our own lord Barasume who has begun to understand the full meaning of the code. And I bet you have seen people that are walking the path to understanding but are not quite there yet."
Another nod comes from the kobold.

The 3rd point I wish to make about the code of bushido. If a samurai strays too far away from the code, you both know what happens they are expected to die by suicide or battle. Yet you find corrupt samurai.

You see Samurai in these lands have ultimate power. They are the police, protectors, sometimes lawyers, administrators and every daimyo and shogun are samurai by law. A few are Onna-bugeishia but let’s face it they are female samurai if not in name. With this much power it is easy for one to be corrupted by that very same power.

When you can kill someone for sticking their tongue out at you in disrespect legally that is an awesome amount of power and responsibility. Thus, the code is in place to temper all that power. However, if a samurai is corrupted, they are very good at hiding their ambitions and dealings to acquire more. They are very much more trained to be systematic in their approach to living. Fenced in by a code that they learn to use to break that very same code. “Did that make sense to both of you?"

Drasta nods as he says, “Does that help the both of you understand?”

She affirms, “In some ways it does.”

He smiles, “Good, so you will find samurai that are good and bad.”

Drasta says, “I believe we had already found one who was bad.”

Khzuro looks aside at Drasta as she mentions the bad samurai, pretty clear who they're referring to, then looks back to the priest, then a nod, seeming to appreciate their words.

"There are many, but they tend not to rise to the top of the heap. You will not find a shogun nor Daimyo that strays far from the code at least in public." The priest replies.

Drasta thinks long and hard. “Perhaps this is in some the reason why lord Barasume was angry with me.”
"What do you mean. Please explain. Perhaps I may help you understand?"

“Perhaps I have not learned as quickly as he thought I would. I act quickly and it has seen me to be a danger to others and a fool at times.”

"Have you acted in haste without thinking, endangering those around you at any time?"

Khzuro seems happy to let Drasta take the lead on the conversations, listening but keeping quiet for now.
She sighs looking back. It may be true.”

The priest nods. "Lord Barasume expects his people to think before acting. He became shogun for a reason acting when the time is right to act. Holding and learning of his enemies when the time is to think and plan. Know your enemy first then use the appropriate action for the appropriate time."

The priest claps his hands, and an acolyte monk comes over to him. He writes something down on a piece of paper and hands it to the monk. the monk leaves and comes back with a small book. Drasta watches carefully.

The priest hands the book to Drasta, "This is book from the mainland written by a great war philosopher of the past. It is called 'The Art of War' It will help you understand much about how a Daimyo or Shogun thinks when they go to battle. It will also show you much about strategy and tactics, and how to think. I especially like the last chapter it is about spies and espionage. Which is part of what you as a Besshikime will be doing for whatever patron you are pledged to."

She looks at the book in her hands. “I see.”

"I also hope that helps clear your mind as well and gives you some comfort, little one."

He chuckles, "It's always good to learn to read better. I must attend to my own parishioners now. I hope both of you have found some understanding."

Khzuro bows. "This has helped, this one gives thanks to you." The priest smiles and after proper honorifics he leaves to take care of the rest of his flock.

Khzuro looks around to see whom else is there, a glance to Drasta, but for now the kobold remains quiet. There are many that walk in and light incense praying for the many things and people they pray for. He decides to keep respectfully observing/participating as tradition demands unless anyone wish to speak with him further.

Drasta smiles at Khzuro after the priest leaves not saying anything but looking curious as ever.

He looks at her. “Was there something you wished to ask this one?"

“Still, I find you curious small one.”

"Probably do." He pauses, considering "Say, you are from afar, yes? There... was something this one was hoping to ask, about the lands afar."

“What is it you would know.”

"You've heard what this one is... have you seen others of his kind in the lands afar, beyond Kara-tur? And, if you have, what are they like?"

“Others like you...Most I have encountered are not friendly nor do they wish to talk.”

"Ah..." There's a pause, a nod "What happened? Am guessing it resulted in violence... can she say why that occurred, if this one's supposition is correct?"

“Perhaps there was something dark controlling over them I could not tell, and they refused to converse about it.”

A nod "Suppose we'll never know. Suppose it doesn't matter, though."

“Not all of your kind see the same light in the places I have traveled, matter of very few find others company or trustworthy.”

"Have heard only scattered tales of the lands beyond. Have heard they were often chaotic... barbaric. Not sure if it's true or is exaggeration. Or..." A look aside. An unsaid 'if this land is really any different', but a polite refrain from mentioning it where the priests could overhear it.”
“In some ways it is just that.”

A nod, considering "Am guessing you are going to say it's more complicated, though?"

“There are indeed complications. Many lands are shrouded in some type of evil or darkness which burdens many different beasts and creatures. Perhaps this puts darkness in them which is more dangerous than many things.”

"This one sees... that... does sound terrible indeed." A sigh "Is hoping that is resolved somehow, brought to proper balance."

“It is something that remains Unseen.”

There's a nod in turn "This one gives thanks for the answers."

“Of course.”

Khzuro quiets down, perhaps done asking. Or politely allowing Drasta to ask him things.

She smirks at him. “Well, I feel I may find a quiet place to rest for a time.”

"Alright then, rest well, then."

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

Early one morning everyone sees a little 5ft and a tad woman coming out on the practice ground. There she waits with nothing but a quarterstaff wearing a Gi. It doesn’t take long for Hideo and Samo to come out of the barracks. Hideo is in heavy infantry armor while Samo is whistling softly.

The woman stops the two of them. “I will be training the shogun’s son for combat from now on. The shogun states I must get him ready for his trials by the end of the year.”

Drasta just starting on the practice field slips into the shadows of the back pavilion and watches. She notes the woman isn’t even in armor. Just a standard light robe. Haruki and Khzuro sit on a short wall dividing the pavilion from the practice field. Sei walks on to the field for some archery training when he too stops and goes by some others he knows to watch this unusual event.

Hideo looks at the small woman, folds his hands over his stomach and starts to laugh hysterically. “I think I should be offended. What are you? 19 or 20 and weigh what 90lbs?”

The woman just raises and eyebrow. “They say you fight like a girl. So now you get a girl trainer.”

Hideo laughs again and punches Samo lightly on the arm, “I got this.”

The woman smiles. “You think I’m so easy……...ok………If you lose you have to wear a woman’s dress and makeup the rest of the day………and every other time I defeat you.”

“And what do I get if I win?”

“I’ll share your bed.”

“Ha, Ha, now after 5 days in the barracks I’m finally going to get what a man needs.”

“Come on then if you’re so sure of yourself.”

Hideo comes in full bore. The woman lets him get close then gives him a straight front kick between the legs. As he bends down, she grabs on of his kabuto’s demon horns and knees him in his face mask crushing the side of it and rips the off the helmet all together. As he stumbles to the ground, she walks away, spins her staff and goes into a defensive position.

Hideo is chocking down a cry on the ground and slowly gets back up, yelling, Give me a staff!"
"You’re going to pay for that as soon as I catch my breath" She just shrugs.

Drasta chuckles from the shadows.

When he’s ready he comes in again. She easily parries several blows then swings her staff up between his legs again. He drops his staff and bending over to throw up and she bashes him in the side of the head with her own with a flip around. He again gets laid out on his stomach regurgitating his breakfast. She tells him to get up!

It takes him over 3 minutes to get up and 10 to catch his wind. He again attacks not willing to admit defeat and wanting the prize. She looks around for what she needs and sees a horse post nearby. As he attacks, she parries him time and again while backing up. When she gets near the hitching post, she suddenly counters smacking his wrist until he has to let go of his own staff. Then she drops hers and attacks him barehanded. As she does, she gets her thighs around his neck and punches him several times in the face all while squeezing the air from him. Just before he passes out, she lets go drags him to the hitching post and starts beating his face against it until his mask is completely broken off. He has a broken nose and is missing several teeth. She then drops him.

She leans down and place her hands on his face. There's a faint light and all his swollen bruises suddenly soften. "Samo a bucket of cold water please." She grabs Hideo by the hair while Samo pours the water over his face.

Hideo wakes up groggily. "A pink kimono and your face highlighted in pink. If any samurai take a liking to you in the barracks that’s on you. You lost. First lesson Onna-bugeisha are twice as vicious as Samurai because they must prove themselves twice as hard or they won’t be respected. Oh, and if you can’t recite every ancestor for the last 100 years that you have had. You'll be running 5 hours into town and back in your pink kimono."

Hideo has to be dragged off the field and back to the barracks. The woman walks back into the palace.

Drasta laughs and goes to practice on the field. Haru is starting to train her in exotic weapons of Kozakura all except Katana for obvious reasons. Peasants are not allowed to so much as touch a katana without a samurai’s permission.

Sei just chuckles under his breath at hearing how badly the young woman did Hideo in. He shakes his head slowly and smiles. It will be a lasting memory. As he goes back to the aviary he sees a young woman at the door. She bows to him. “Greetings are you Sei the master falconer?”

Sei nods, “Indeed.” He recognizes her.

"I am Kinu. Administrator Morimoto has sent me to be your assistant and apprentice."

"Ah, well met then. Have you worked with birds before, or will this be your first time?"

"It will be my first time, Master."

"That is fair. I reckon we'll have to go through the basics and then find you a hawk or the likes to work with."
"As you wish. I will clean up the splicing and floors to start. Master where would you like me to sleep?"
"Sleep as you normally would, there is nothing pressing us in this."

"I'll put up a bed next to yours so you may wake me if you need my assistance during the night."

"If you so wish it"

Letters are sent out, Khzuro and Sei are both called to the palace.

Khzuro wanders around seeking out all the head pats and getting all the snuggles he can from the palace folk. He meets Haruki there waiting to be let in to the office he was sent too. He hurries over to her. “Greetings, this one hopes that you’ve been treated well here?”

She nods, “You can see me at any time. Except at night, I think. The besshikime bar everyone from the concubine home at night. Let us go and see why they want us.”

The two of them are directed to a small office. When you come in the young woman that beat up Hideo is there. There are personal files behind her. When she sees you, she stands and waits. Haruki pales but bows to her.

Sei goes to the palace. Kinu follows him grabbing paper and quill. He arrives at the office and gives the young woman a deep bow. Now the lady bows to all of them in recognition. “I am Lady Furi. Lady Shinto, have no fear of me. I will not harm you or your strange companion. Please…. Sit, All of you.”

Sei sits himself slightly behind Haruki and Khzuro, letting Kinu seat herself with him. The woman takes note of it. Khzuro follows Haruki and sits himself beside her protectively wanting to ask about the concubine home, but it’s clear he doesn’t like that Haruki is placed there. Or maybe just doesn’t like the idea of concubines. Or maybe the kobold just doesn’t understand at all.

Furi sits down and looks at several files. “"It seems the Kami can give wishes. interesting I thought that was a myth. Well in any case it seems all of you have been through quite an ordeal. I would like to know about that and more about your guards. It seems there was much miscommunication and missed opportunities.

Who would like to start explaining all this and what you think of your current companions being that all of you are of the non-marshal persuasions except for Sei."

When no one answers she turns to Sei. "Sei, Samo was the head samurai on your mission. How was his performance? What do you think could have been done better?"

"Samo did fairly well in my opinion, and I am most certainly not a man of martial persuasion...I can hold my own with a blade, but samurai I am not."

she nods, “Understandable. There was also some trouble with the Besshikime. One has been fired and one killed herself for honor reasons? Could anything have been done to prevent that? What are your thoughts on Mika, and Drasta?"

Khzuro cranes his head, but for now keeps quiet, though keeps an eye on Haruki to see how she's doing. Haruki remains attentive but also guarded.

Sei responds, "Some saw Drasta as a threat, not an opportunity, I guess...I was not privy to Mika's motivations or thoughts."

“Drasta is a westerner and.......... looks through the file.........is slated to be the besshikime an imperial ambassador to a foreign land. I can see why she would be considered a threat. Do you not?”

"Presuming someone to be a threat from the outset makes them into the very shadow you fear."

Furi thinks about it. “A good insight. Thank you." she bobs her head slightly. "Lady Shinto. Much of your file is blacked out to me. That usually means you have been badly traumatized since you are obviously no spy." She looks at Khzuro for a second. "One of my missions will be to help you integrate back to your proper place.

Whatever the trauma it will be with you your whole life, however I hope to help put it more to the back of your mind rather than having it run your life. I hear your little companion has helped much."

Haruki nods again somewhat guardedly, Furi continues. "We will go to the theater tonight to relax. You all of course are invited. You've had a hard journey and were never rewarded with some fun and relaxation. On the next mission I will be coming with you.

Sei, your new assistant Kinu is a peasant girl from the imperial city. She is also Sohei. Therefore, she will be able to assist you even more on your next. You are her master now. Train her well as a samurai to their apprentice."

Kinu bows politely. Furi continues, “Hideo will not be going anywhere until he learns to be a man.”

Khzuro smirks at the mention of Hideo but replies when offered to go to the theater. “Would be honored.”

She nods, “Do any of you have questions for me? It’s only fair?” More than a minute passes by. “Nothing?”

She focuses on Sei. “Perhaps in a better setting while we watch tonight’s play with a table full of food and drink in front of us.” She stands. "You are dismissed to prepare yourselves." Proper honorifics are observed and Furi leaves the office.

About an hour later Furi shows up at the Besshikime barracks and talks to Haru. Haru calls everyone to formation other than those that are working, including the 5 new teenage girls. Haru twists her mouth. “The lady Furi Gozen wishes a permanent Besshikime while she is training. Lady Furi is the second cousin of Emperor Hojo. This is an important mission.”

Drasta stands quietly in formation.

She turns to Furi. “Many are new recruits. We only have a few full time besshikime.”

Furi answers her. “. "Thank you." She then walks up and down the line. then comes back to Haru. I want the foreigner."

"Drasta is a trainee and is not currently in the position to guard anyone until she learns patience."

Furi smiles. "I love a challenge. She is the one I want." She then turns to Drasta. I'll be going to the theater tonight. Get dressed properly and wait for me outside."

Khzuro remains with Haruki in the meantime, perhaps waiting to see if they're alone before he asks her anything else. She goes to the concubine home to dress and put on her makeup. Khzuro is able to pass the two female guard there. One rubs his head and makes a wish.

He enjoys the head pats and purrs happily as he's petted. Listens to the wish, then when he's alone with Haruki, he looks around, then speaks to her. "Are you... comfortable here? This one doesn't much understand this place, but is it really the best place to serve one's house?" (It seems he has trouble understanding concubines.)

She nods her head. “I am not serving Khzuro. It is a place of safety. No one will touch me because I am spoiled by my own father. That is why the shogun put me here. until I decide what to do."

"I see. Am glad for that at least." There's a pause "So... has anything come to mind yet?"

She shakes her head. “I don’t know what to do or who to trust yet. The only one I do trust is you."

He nods, considering, "Am afraid this one hasn't had enough time to read this place yet. Glad Shogun is protecting you, for now. Does sound like finding your sisters will be complicated at the moment. But am wondering if you would prefer another position down the line. If not nobility, then... something else. If it hurts too much to return to that."

"I'm not sure what I can do. or.......do correctly. I’m not a lawyer or priestess like my sisters. I tended to father. Do you think this new woman can be trusted?"

"Possibly, she has so far behaved in a manner that matches what I have heard is proper behavior. This one has noticed no problems thus far. And they seemed astute enough. Still, the offering to go to the theater with them it's also an opportunity to observe them, get to know them better to see if they are honest and benevolent, and take their duties seriously. Or if they're corrupt and need to be handled warily."

Haruki nods, "You would be better at this than I would. I'll go with your guidance."

"Will need to find others to work with eventually. Tribes do not function if everyone is alone. Nor do houses.”

Haruki nods and thinks. She finishes her make up and you two get horses out of the stable and join Furi at the front of the besshikime barracks. Furi shows up with two horses. Sei and Kinu also show up. All now wait for Drasta. She still needs some help with makeup but joins as well afterwards.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

Everyone rides down to the theater in town. They move through the hustle and bustle of one of the largest cities in Kozakura. Making it to the theater just in time to see the opening act of the kabuki show. Furi seems to know what she is doing. There is already a table for everyone in the back of the room with just enough seats for everyone. Waiters rush to the table as everyone sits serving tea and sake.

Khzuro makes a note not to have the sake just yet. It’s a bit too early to start licking everyone’s face after all.

As the first act unfolds Furi, who is sitting on Drasta’s right reaches her hand to her side on the table near the elven and upturns it towards her, fingers extended. She notices but sits quietly watching her actions, not the play. Khzuro looks up to Haruki, but also seems to be observing Furi carefully too, still, he tries to enjoy the play.

Furi makes eye contact with Drasta and quietly says, “Touch, it is important to all who think: All social creatures. Take my hand, please. I wish a sense of team among us. I want us to know we all must work together and be comfortable with one another. It is only then we may work as a fully formed unit. Take my hand please.”

Drasta looks carefully and places her hand out to the Onna-musha. Furi takes it as the play moves on. She then looks around the table. “I understand there is a mission coming up. I will be joining you. I know that you may have questions about me or the mission at hand. Sei of course will be our civilian leader. I will take over as head of the guard. Kinu will always guard her master. So, what would all of you like to know about me or the mission at hand?”

Sei relaxes just a bit as he watches the play, keeping one ear on Furi's conversation. Khzuro looks over towards Haruki to see how she’s holding up. He sees that his friend is taking it well. She’s not used to going to a play but seems for once to be enjoying herself. Drasta is sitting staring directly at Furi and her own hand questionably.

Furi holds Drasta’s hand softly through act two. Though her hands are very callous she seems to have a soft touch. Khzuro also tries to enjoy the show. (There is some culture shock to deal with, but he seems to be relaxed enough.) Drasta shrugs and intertwines her fingers in Furi’s to judge her reaction. Khzuro again looks over but doesn’t comment. (He supposes that they have different ways of enjoying contact since they can't nose rub the same way kobolds can. Oh well.) Furi then grips Drasta’s hand slightly.

Furi then looks over at Sei. “Sei, could you fill everyone in on the mission at hand?”

"Ah, yes, we are seeking to calm a minor god, if you will, one who has gone and ravaged a fishing village with storm and wave in their wrath, no?"

Khzuro raises an eye ridge at that, considering, but keeps silent for now.

Drasta lightly chuckles and quietly says, “Curious?”

"As I said Touch is very important. It forms a bond between people. It is what I consider a most important sense. It lets others know, 'I will always have your back. That we are sisters and brothers of a common cause."

Furi now answering Sei says, "For those that do not know our gods it is very bad to kill one even if one can be killed and many can. There are dragons, and many other creatures here that we consider gods to themselves. They are guardians of nature and rise from our beautiful lakes. Our mission will not be to exterminate it but rather to find the answers to what is wrong with it and correct the wrong done to it."

Sei nods firmly to Furi’s comment. Drasta also nods not losing eye contact with her, Khzuro as well it seems that he approves. Though he wonders if there will be eyes on the Kami/Kobold when the topic of dragons is raised. And of course if there will be the complimentary head pats that come with it.

No one turns their heads to see Khzuro’s reaction, but he does get head pats from patrons walking by now and again. Furi notes the petting. "An unusual custom of the south I take it to rub the head of a Kami. is it for good luck?"

Drasta answers her. “It seems that way.”

Khzuro is too involved enjoying all the head pats and purrs happily from all the affection. Khzuro just keeps listening along for now, though keeps an eye on Haruki to ensure she's still happy, which she seems to be.

Between act 3 and act 4 there is a pause, and some street food is brought over. deep fired octopus, soba, cakes, and other delicacies. Furi never releases Drasta's hand, she picks up her chopsticks with her other and eats still holding it. As she does, she asks, “Sei what is your plan of action? Do you have any theories on how we start?"

Kinu snuggles up to Sei as he answers Furi. "I was thinking that we'd be starting by surveying the situation, since I don't have a lot of current information about what's happened."

Khzuro glances at Sei and looks around for anyone to snuggle up with as well. Haruki gladly appeases him. Furi’s attention momentarily shifts to the odd pair. She observes her for a long time but says nothing. Khzuro tries to read Furi as she does and though her face is a mask of dispassion, Khzuro seems to get the feeling that she is trying to gauge the depths of Haruki’s depression and torment.

Furi suddenly turns to Sei. “How do you propose surveying?”

Drasta, still confused by the newcomer’s demeanor, picks up some chopsticks and eats as well.
Sei respectfully answers. "Much of it is going to have to be talking with people on the ground, seeing what was happening around the time things changed."

Furi nods, “"An excellent way to start things off. We should at no time be aggressive with the god until such time as we understand why it is eating the populace."

"Aye, lest it make a snack out of us."

Furi chuckles, “Well, let us make sure that does not happen."

Drasta listens to her words carefully then says, “I don't think I would taste very good.” She then chuckles with Furi.

Khzuro keeps snuggling up to Haruki. Because that's what any good kobold would want after all. He also keeps listening though. He doesn’t join the conversation unless invited and keep quiet unless Haruki says something as well.

Furi looks sad for a moment and says, “" I am afraid that Haruki will not be joining us. It's a sensitive mission; however, Khzuro, you are welcome to join us. Perhaps your abilities could prove useful in this investigation. Do not worry. The shogun has her best interest at hand, and she is the sister of a high ranking Barasume."

He looks over considering… It does make sense to the kobold why they want him along, then he looks back to Haruki, then Furi. "This one could help, matters regarding the divine ones are important. Is a reason for their rage, am certain. Still, not sure this one would want to leave Haruki... she does need company she is comfortable with."

Drasta affirms, “Perhaps best she is here and being taken care of.”

The kobold says, "Would want to speak with her first on this, of course." He Looks up to Haruki to see if she has anything to add, that she wants to. Though gets the impression there will be more to say in private.

Haruki frowns. Furi observes her very carefully. Haruki says, "I will avoid others. it should be ok. As I understand the shogun is.......fair though all samurai are violent he seems to...to be fair with others. He will keep me safe and away from those that would try to touch me."

He continues to stare at Haruki, trying to gage if she really is comfortable with being parted from himself. she seems somewhat uncomfortable with you leaving but seems to know the reason she steels her face. He sighs, leaning into Haruki, also seeming reluctant to leave her.

She looks down at him, "You should go for the good of the shogunate, Khzuro. it will raise you in the eyes of the court." Furi listens intently to the conversation.

Khzuro lets out a deep breath before shaking his head. “That's... if this one goes, it will be because there is something wrong. A Chiang Lung's wrath is not random. Something must be very wrong if it is being provoked. A break in what is supposed to be that is of great magnitude. Needs correction."

Sei comments, “"Aye, there has to be something underlying the wrath."

Drasta also agrees, “It is not often dragons have no reason for wrath.” She taps her fingers of her free hand on the table looking at Furi at the beginning of Act 5.

The warrior looks over to her, “Yes?”

The elven smirks, “Trying to keep me from doing something?”

Khzuro nods after the dragon talk then looks up to Haruki. “You're certain you'll be okay...?" And even offers Haruki some snout-rubs. Haruki smiles and rubs her nose with his.

Furi responds to Drasta while noting the display between Haruki and Khzuro. "As I said touch is important. Trying to read into another's mind is not an act of brute force. It is a fragile dance that sometimes lasts a lifetime. never over think. It is important."

"I have my reasons Drasta. Enjoy the companionship."

“Of course.”

The play finishes up with dessert on the table. You see many samurai head backstage.

Furi finally releases Drasta's hand and stands up, "The play is over. I hope that everyone had a good time. Unless any of the males among us wish to pursue after hour activities I suggest it is time to go home now. Let us leave our brothers to their merriment."

The kobold gives a nod to Furi, then looks around at the males and Haruki. Ready to step in if any of them decide to get too fresh with her.

Drasta comments with a bit of sarcasm, “And here I thought you were interested in me.” Furi takes note of the comment but says nothing about it.

Khzuro keeps quiet for now though unless anyone has anything else to say to him but is sure to keep near Haruki.

Everyone goes home to the palace. The short trip is uneventful, and all seem much more relaxed from the arduous adventure they had just come home from.

After the play Khzuro keeps looking around, carefully. But also looks forward to seeing when he’ll be able to speak with Haruki in private. He must wait till morning when he can see her in the concubines’ home. He waits for her. When she comes out, she is as beautiful as ever. They take a stroll along the wooded paths behind the practice fields.

Khzuro is the one who starts the conversation. "Did want to, discuss things, now that we're alone. Some of your concerns, and some things this one wanted to share..."

Haruki nods to Khzuro. "What is it that you wish my friend?"

"A few things, since it seems this one may be called away for a mission... but, first, want to make sure you are well. This one was reading Furi during the play, what is your impression of her?"

"She seems very weird. Word at the palace is that she’s the emperor’s 2nd cousin and no one knows what her job seems to be: Only the emperor and high officials at the court. She moves around mostly and listens. It makes no sense unless she’s a spy herself."

"Certainly, seems that way to this one as well. She was very carefully observing all of us. Knows plenty. Despite that, this one thinks she's on the level. Her look towards you was one of concern, trying to determine how hurt you were, not out of malice. That and her respect for the divine ones and upholding of the ways of the heavens appears good as well."

"Don't think she has ill-will towards you, at least."

"But what is her real mission and how can she treat people so differently. I've never seen anything this extreme?"

"This one admittedly does not know human ways as well as can be, but perhaps she is one who closely enforces the mandate of heaven, without wearing titles openly. That and this one certainly thinks Hideo had what she did to him coming."

Memories flood back to Haruki of her father’s abuse to her sister. She asks, “" Do you think that is a good thing or bad thing?"

"Good thing. You've been abused by where the mandate of heaven has failed after all. It's likely not the only one. There have to be those who will uphold it, lest such abuses run rampant, and things fall apart."
Haruki nods to him, "I still do not know what I am going to do. Where I will go. I'm not sure I want to marry though it is not my choice."

There's a heavy sigh, considering "This one... doesn't know either. But am hoping you find something that suits you. Marrying... admittedly the way this one’s kin handle it is not like your people’s, so cannot say... but this one does think you should have a say in it. What happens to you."

"Do you have a preference on what you do in the future? Where you want to be?"

She shakes her head. It has been many years since my schooling. since I have just tended the property for my father.... and......." She lowers her eyes.

A nod, understanding, knowing she doesn't have to finish that sentence "It's okay, you don't have to talk about it. Just... hoping you have some time to recover from what has happened to you. No one deserves what you had to go through." There's a sigh "Is... one other thing this one should mention, though..."

she nods as tears flood her eyes. Goes to hug her and waits until she calms down before continuing. She hugs him for a long time before she’s ready for any more talk. Waits until she's ready, letting her have the first word when they resume talk. “I both wish and dread to see my sister. She is a priestess The great Eagle. If you find her, ask her to come. Perhaps she can help.

"Then this one will do that if they find her. There is... one other thing this one should mention, though, about that mission they were speaking of..."

She listens, her eyes down thinking. "Before this one was taken into your household, this one did come across a shore, where this one observed the aftermath of the wrath of a Tun Mi Lung.

Isn't sure it is the same one or related, but it might be. At first, this one thought that what might have triggered its wrath was the demon bargain that this one found out about; would certainly qualify. These haven't told the others of what became of that fiend. Is still out there as far as they know..."

"You think the god of the lake is somehow related to a demon that stirred up a typhoon dragon?"

"Don't know. Don't even know if it was the demon that provoked the Tun Mi Lung's wrath, or if it could have been one of many factors, or if they were more bothered by another thing. Certainly, is the kind of thing that could provoke one's wrath."

"Be very careful out there Khzuro. I don’t want to lose my only friend. If you see a Yokai run for your life and don’t stop."

He sighs, "Suppose this one's last attempt to banish one didn't go well..."

" Find a strong monk or priest to banish it if you find one."

A nod "Of course." "Am... concerned about you too. Will you be okay here...? This one... doesn't want to leave then come back to find someone else here hurt you."

" I think it will be ok. I keep to myself. It will be lonely but tolerable."

"That's... not ideal. Am hoping you can find some new friends too. These... seem like decent people here, at least."

she nods " I am afraid."

"Time won't heal everything, but perhaps that and new friends will make things more bearable."
Khzuro also stands within head pat distance.

" I will try, Khzuro. I will try hard." She rubs his head and smiles.

"It won't be easy, I know. Take your time with it if you need to, but I hope you can carry on."
Purrs as his head is rubbed , And makes sure to as unironically as possible give Haruki what support she needs, he doesn't know when he'll be called to go on that mission after all, ...

All through the next two weeks Khzuro in the meantime does what he can to support Haruki as a friend and companion and snuggybold.

For the next few weeks Drasta trains in both marshal endeavors especially in special weapons. Sei trains Kinu in the art of falconry. Furi is at practice daily brutalizing Hideo. She works not only on his combat skills but his knowledge on law, accounting, history, and dance. Every time he gets it wrong, she brutalizes him again in practice until he’s crawling off the field. it gets to where he needs to be pushed out by the other samurai to even get on to the practice field in time. She wounds him badly on several occasions but always heals him or has a cleric heal him when her healing isn’t enough.

Khzuro snickers some as Hideo gets his due. Sei winds up pitching in to help mend Hideo's injuries on a few occasions when he’s on the field with them. Drasta does the same when asked with some weird herbs while she is doing combat training laughing the whole time. Khzuro doesn't move to help Hideo. If anything, the kobold seems to figure he's got it coming.

Furi seems to be the opposite working with him compared with her relations with the rest of the palace. She gives him no quarter, no reprieve, and no empathy at all.

Kinu in the meantime keeps warming up to Sei until one night he finds her in his bed instead of her own. He just shakes his head and chuckles lightly.

After several days Drasta knocks on Sei’s door. He answers with a bow. “Good to see you Drasta. I take it you wish to speak?”

“I have come to see how you were since we have not spoken much since our last journey.”

"Ah, thank you for the concern, I've been well, just been taking things quietly since then."

Drasta nods, “It is good to hear. How does your bird fair, is it ready to fly yet?”

Kinu quietly cleans up while Sei and Drasta talk. No one in the palace has seen her in the practice field or anywhere else but the Aviary for that matter though she does seem to disappear without a trace from time to time.

"I trust that your own studies have been going well, Drasta?”

“I indeed hope this is the case. My prior actions seem to have caused some issues with many....I should ask for some forgiveness on my quick actions.”

"Aye, perhaps making amends would help..."

. She half smirks but not happily, “Perhaps My actions are too quick. I do my best to make sure I keep myself under control on this next venture if they do not keep me from it.”

A fly crosses the room and buzzes by Drasta. As it starts to pass Kinu she swats it with the broom handle she has in her hands. It flies across the room and splats on the opposite wall. She shrugs and continues her work quietly. Drasta raises and eyebrow. “Curious…” Then she looks at Sei before heading to the door. “Do let me know when you want to fly again, I would be happy to join you.

"I'm sure I'll be taking you up on your offer sometime in the not-so-distant future." small smile to Drasta.
She gives a bow and exits returning to quarters. Sei bows her farewell as well.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

After two weeks everyone gathers at the gate of the palace. Winter, for what it is here is near its end. The morning is still a cool 50 degrees with a north wind cutting through most clothing. Everyone is packing and checking their supplies when two mounted individuals show up. They are Bunka and Samo.
Furi’s face goes passive, and she bows to the newcomers. “Dancing Bear, Cobress, a welcome to you and be at peace.

Samo smiles, “War Kitten! How are you.” She nods.

Sei bows to Bunka and Samo quietly.

Samo states, “We are coming with you.”

Furi replies flatly, “And your duties?”

Bunka says, "Haru will take over my position while I’m away, Samo has nothing to do now that Hideo is in deep studies with his civil teachers. They have long sticks that bite at fingers if needed."

Furi nods to then then looks to Sei, "Understand this is a civil discourse so Sei is our leader not our general of female warriors."

Bunka shows a slight disapproval on her face but says, "It is understood."

Sei nods slightly to this. Khzuro is still snuggling with Haruki doing what he can to be Haruki's supportive friend.

Haruki breaks away from Khzuro as you mount up and leave the palace. Furi has a large case full of files on one side of her horse instead of a saddle bag. She pulls one of the files out as you leave the city of Renkyu. "There is one person missing from the group. A priestess we will procure from one of the major temples in a near city. Her name is Shinto Sango."

Bunka suddenly looks angry, "We have enough War Kitten. We have no need! Is this some kind of stunt?!"

Sei mentions, "I think a priest would be but wise to have alongside us for this sort of mission, no?"

Khzuro doesn’t seem particularly thrilled to be separated from Haruki, though once done so and worked through the separation anxiety after she fades from view, he looks back to the other "Priest's counsel would be wise. Guidance of the heavens will be needed."

Drasta agrees, “Indeed a priest could be valuable in negotiations.”

Furi looks back her face a mask of steel, "Lady Ishiro Bunka, you are not privy to what I and your shogun are discussing between the two of us. Shinto Sango will be a member of this investigative party whether you like it or not. Jealousy breeds the very thing that got one of your own Besshikime killed. Let us not let your personal feelings mar the whole of the group or its mission. Now do we have an understanding?"

Bunka becomes tight mouthed but replies, "I understand."

The group rides all day without incident and find an inn which would be familiar to Drasta during the night.
Drasta looks at it and says, “Shit!”

Sei asks, “"...is this the place you had that run-in at, Drasta...?"

“It’s where Hiromy….”

After dinner Furi brings her case in and brings out several folders. She spends several hours reading, amending, and taking notes on what she reads. Samo drinks copious amounts of sake and finds a local brothel. Bunka stays in her room. Kinu keeps shadow on Sei for anything he may need or want. She manages to tame an eastern marsh harrier. Sei takes Kinu out to help teach her some fieldwork in the local area. Drasta finds a dark corner to stay quiet in.

When Sei and Kinu return, Sei seeks out Drasta. “Something the matter?”

“There are many things I feel may be at play.”

Furi watches their body movements and faces even when she cannot hear what they are saying at her place in the common room of the inn.

Khzuro spends his time at the tavern getting all of the head pats and snuggling with everyone, kobold heaven. Khzuro looks around but tries to keep an eye on things. Particularly their unfamiliar companions. He finds a corner in the common room where there’s some activity, but in general stays with the group. He can see Furi, Drasta, Sei and Kinu. Furi is taking notes and moving files around while Drasta Sei and Kinu are discussing something.

Sei continues. "Just didn't know if it was the place that made you think ill, or if something else was the matter."

“This is where she took her life Sei…”

"Ah." Sei nods slightly, needing no more.

Drasta nods and scribbles a bit in her notebook. “It’s a shame it happened....Perhaps I understand in some ways now more than before.”

Khzuro listens to the local chatter and picks up on some things. The first is ‘That weird elf is back in town again hopefully she doesn’t blow this tavern up too.’

The second is, ‘There's talk of a local wedding between two young peasants. The locals think it’s a good match and highly praise the local matchmaker. There's talk of the girl having a small bulge in her belly, but the young man seems very happy. All think it’s a good thing.’

The third is, ‘A missing Onna-bugeisha from clan Dosaki has been found. It seems she got drunk on whiskey and fell into a fire. Her body was almost completely consumed in the flames.’

And the last he picks up on is, ‘The local peasants talk of their lord’s lady wife’s birthday and wonder what the couple will give the peasantry this year for her birthday it is tradition for lord and ladies birthdays that they give something to the populace to make their people’s lives better in some way.’

Once Sie and Drasta are done Furi calls Drasta over to her table as she’s putting away her files back into the case. Drasta stands closing her book and approaches the woman.

“Please sit, would you like some tea?”

The elven nods, “Please.” Then she pulls a chair and sits down as well.

Furi has tea brought to the table. She stares at Drasta a long time measuring her eyes and body language. Drasta remains calm and collected with a bit of unease.

"You told several people in the palace that Barasume Miwa has changed much in exile. I need to know how so? Please do not lie. How has she changed?”

“In the time I have known her she seems to have learned much, perhaps become wiser and less like myself.”
"What are her tolerances. What will she not tolerate?"

“Honesty and integrity are important to her. Dealing with those who steal or hurt others for no reason is not approved of.... There are many things.”

“Tell me then… As you remember.”

"Perhaps the one I remember most was on another island where an order who called themselves ‘The Flames’ were using a child for their own profit of religion. looks down a moment They had no remorse that it was slowly killing her. Miwa did not take kindly to them and refused to help them. I believed she would challenge them, but she did not perhaps out of respect with it not being her land. Perhaps she saw no purpose since there were many and not easily stopped. Perhaps because the child was not there to help directly.”

Furi thinks about that a long time before asking another question. "What of the bushido code how closely does she follow it now that she’s been in exile these many years. Does she still walk the path?"

“I believe she does as she was taught to.”

"Through blind obedience or with sense?"

“I would believe she has sense of it and what she is doing along her own path.”

"Has she had lovers during her exile? If so, how many do you know of and are there children?"

“I know of none and none to bear.”

"Do you think she is still a jealous woman?"

“If she were to be I do not believe it was ever stated or recognized in my time with her.”
"Yet it is known she killed one of her husband’s lovers in a jealous rage." Her eyes watch for Drasta’s reactions.

Drasta folds her hands together looking her over. “Did she?”

Furi thinks a long time about it. "Yes, I believe so. How much of her father's training do you think still influences her?"

“Perhaps she thinks on it and uses it when necessary though I do not know all that she went through with that one. That one is not best for me to answer.”

"She is getting older now. Do you think she is still viable as a woman?" Furi watches Drasta's face carefully waiting for a response.

Chuckles, “In your years I am sure she has many left to be viable, she does often speak of settling down and having small children.”

Furi nods “Thank you for your time. Now I must work alone.”

Drasta studies her for a moment then steps away. She then as she makes her way to the stairs, she sees Furi pulling a rather thick folder out of her case and start to take notes.

Khzuro partially picks up on the conversation between Drasta and Furi as they talk. Furi is well trained not to react and is very hard to read. After Drasta goes upstairs, Furi is writing notes. She often stares off into the distance as if looking for something unseen.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

The group spends the day going southwest along a familiar road. It is quiet but rainy as spring winds start to blow from the southeast. In the evening, they come to a small town making good progress and find a tea house for the night. It doesn’t have much of a menu, just soba, rice and fish spiced with ginger and garlic in a mildly hot sauce along with fried octopus. The beds are well used and there are working girls there for any who want to partake. They are not the courtesans that you know. These are common whores. The tea house has decent beer, sake, and rum.

Khzuro doesn’t have any idea of what ‘working girls’ or whores are. He just blinks confused when seeing them and hearing about them. He tries to gather some gossip and information assuming they have time to. He finds out three things. The first is: There is talk of the lake city that you will go to after picking up Sango. The villagers here heard a rumor that the village of the lake is considering or has already started to make human sacrifices to the god of their petty criminals.

He also hears about a songbird migration coming in a week. Some want to watch the birds, others mean to put nets in the trees so that they can catch and eat them as delicacies.

The last thing he hears about is a fight in two between two bully shop owners in the town market. It seems one has lost his hand and vows revenge on the other as soon as they get out of jail. He said he has connections.
Drasta acks as waitress and brings drinks to the table. Sei refrains from the working girls, spending a bit of time working with his birds and his apprentice instead after he eats. Bunka eats and drinks but each time she takes a bite she looks at Drasta suspiciously.

Khzuro finds Furi and fills her in on the rumor of human sacrifices. (Which takes priority in his mind.) Along with the fight between the shop owners but that one Khzuro doesn’t think is of high importance. Furi nods to him while taking notes in her folders and watching everyone in the group. She eats and drinks sparingly while doing this.

Drasta sips from her bottle quietly watching everyone and keeping a tally of any items that need to be replaced. Both Sei and Khzuro refrain from any alcohol. Samo gorges himself on anything set in front of him and if he doesn’t eat it the two girls, he called over do. He starts to get tipsy, and the girls take him upstairs.

Drasta half chuckles at Bunka as she eyes her. Bunka finally gets up and leaves throwing a half-dozen Ryo on the table. After she leaves Frui perks her eyes up and stares at Drasta.

Kinu is attentive to Sei but not so much that she smothers him. She gives him the space he needs.
Drasta comes over to Furis table and sits down shaking her head.

Furi asks, “Tell me Drasta what would you do if your days were numbered?”

“I believe I would spend my time between two places. First at the side of the one I love, Second Doing what I can to protect the people I care for. I find there can be honor in both things even when your time has come, what you do in life is a reflection of yourself into the world that some may remember you for whether it be for saving many or helping the few.” She chuckles lightly. “Some will always see you as a monster though.” Swirls her bottle and takes a small sip.

"Interesting. And what would you do if you were her? Counting the days when you face an opponent so strong you have no chance against them? What would you do then?"

“It would depend on if this opponent must be faced alone or not...If alone perhaps spend some time making peace with yourself whether that be training or in temple, sometimes being at peace with one's own can help you in a fight. If the enemy would not be faced alone perhaps one would seek out allies to support them in this fight to come.”

Sei listens in on the conversation while talking bird things with Kinu.

Furi smiles, “You still do not fully understand the games the nobility of Kozakura play. She looks at Khzuro, "What would you do?"

He raises and eye ridge. "This one's days are numbered. All mortal beings have numbered days. Not a hypothetical question, that."

Furi looks at them all. "Bunka knows the likely day of her death. She has no true answer on what to do. She fishes for something to help her hang on to life after that day. It is about honor, position, and power."
Khzuro responds, “"If a death is so certain and approaching soon, is best to ensure that one gives the most they can to the whole before then."

Drasta opens a book and makes a few notes, sipping her wine.

Furi smiles at Khzuro. “Said like a samurai who truly follows the way. I commend you little one. And Sei, what would you do?"

"...that's a difficult question. Are we talking about some foreshadowing of a violent death in battle, or the work of time and age, a peaceful passing in bed?"

"If she dies that day, it will either be by the hand of another or by her own blade.”
There’s a nod from Khzuro, then he quiets down.

She waits for Sei’s answer. Sei looks to her for an answer to his own question in response. Seeing that he does not understand she speaks again. "Let me put it this way. One the day she will die if she does not change it will be violent at the hand of another in a dual or by her own blade is seppuku."

“Ah, here I was thinking you were asking the question of me with regards to my own passing."

Furi waits. Drasta nods to what Sei says thinking the same. He thinks for a moment then says, “"...I'm honestly not sure, if you're asking me to step into say Bunka's slippers."

“Yes, I am. Does anyone know what Bunka doesn’t realize and why she doesn’t realize it?"
Drasta looks up from her book stopping, “Perhaps pondering on the time she will die is affecting her in her decisions. Specifically, if she is more focused on finding something that will keep her alive after...I have seen such break others before to the point their end will come regardless.”

Furi shakes her head. "Even within the strict samurai code and tradition there is room for alternatives, but many samurai let pride and honor blind them to any choices but the extreme. Now if someone were to take the blinders off before her eyes, perhaps, just perhaps she may find these alternatives. Dead or dishonor is not the only way, in most cases not all."

Sei suddenly looks to everyone sadly, “Aye, pride can be quite the blinding force indeed.”

Drasta nods to both.

Furi nodes and stands. She carefully collects her folders and puts them in her case. “It is time for me to retreat for the night. Good night to you all, Be at peace.”

Khzuro looks up to Furi to see if she responds in any way to the rumors he shared with her. She doesn’t seem to respond but he knows she took them in.”

Drasta looks up a moment from her text at Furi. “Rest well.”

Kinu sits back. “She’s a strange one. Sometimes she makes me nervous with those piercing eyes. It's almost as if she sees your soul."

Sei affirms, “Aye, she’s definitely got a bit of a wisewoman to her.”

Drasta waves for a bar maid to come over a moment. She comes and collects Bunka’s coin with a smile and pinches Drasta’s cheek. She’s about 50 years old and probably the owner’s wife. Drast chuckles and hands over 5 platinum coins. She points to the sake bottle on the top shelf. “If I may?”

“I get it for you. No roughhousing afterward or I’ll throw ye out the window.”

Drasta nods with a giggle. The maid waddles over and gets the bottle. She comes back and sets it on the table. Drast places four sake cups in a row and pours some in each, corking the bottle and putting it in her bag. She picks up one and makes a toast. “To a quiet night.”

Kinu drinks hers then takes Sei’s and drinks his too. He chuckles at her. Drasta smirks opens her book and start to draw again.

It gets late and everyone goes to bed.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

The night is cooler but still very humid and sticky. Everyone but Khzuro has some trouble with sleep. Everyone gets up in the morning to a breakfast of bread, eggs and tea. They head out to find their priestess.

Again, they have a day of riding free from any troubles except of the dreary rain, which all but Khzuro seem to be bothered by. The group tires quickly and 3 hours before sundown Furi asks Sei to stop at the next town. Everyone is soaked through their armor to the bone. The next tea house has baths which everyone may share. Samo seems to do a slow-motion studding around during his time bathing. Furi seems quite pleased and can’t help but giggle here and there like a teenage girl. Kin rolls her eyes at him. Bunka seems immune to his antics.

Sei joins the party taking the opportunity to take a bath, what with the soaking rains of the day. Drasta is hesitant to be naked in front of everyone in some ways. Kinu comes out of the bath and leaves early to see to the birds as Sei taught giving him time to think about their upcoming encounters. Furi watches Drasta with interest measuring her reactions to everything.

Samo stretches out his hand to Drasta, “Dance?” He’s bathed now but still completely naked.” She slides by him politely declining with a glare while slipping into one of the baths trying to hide her arms. Furi takes note of it. He laughs and looks for any more sake in the room.

Furi again giggles, “Are the western women all ashamed of their own bodies? I have heard that from others.”
Drasta shakes her head with a chuckle. “It is not common to bathe with men and women in the same room. Though curiously I find humans with so much hair in places other than their head.”

Samo laughs and rustles his chest hair with his fingers. He comments. “With no one to guard we are comrades in arms. No shame in hair or hairlessness. Though I do like a bit of hair on girls in just the right places.”

Its Drasta’s turn to giggle, “Verca!”
Furi laughs, “I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t pass on a gorilla girl.” Samo rolls his eyes to the ceiling and thinks about that.

Drasta heartily laughs at that comment. She looks at Sei. “Though if I found men attractive perhaps.” She again chuckles a bit playfully. Samo sucks in his belly (as much of it as he can) and shows off his biceps holding his breath.

Both Drasta and Furi laugh at the antic. Drasta stretches her arms above her head and throws some water on top of him. When his face starts to turn blue, he bends over and lets it all out. He uses one of the tubs for support. “That’s it, I’m pooped. Time for a towel.” He takes a towel off one of the racks, wraps it around himself and shakes his hips as he walks out of the bath area. Bunka just palms her forehead and sighs in relief.
Drasta smirks, “If that show when on any longer, I might have needed some wine.”

Khzuro casts a prestidigitation spell on himself to make sure he’s clean. He does watch his companions with some…. confusion. Clearly unfamiliar with human customs.

Furi smiles. “Samo is a good fellow. He outranks all of us, yet he takes it lightly. Perhaps not the best of Samurai but he loves life. That’s important too. He is the type that finds quiet retirement in a small village after his days as a loyal retainer.” She focuses on Bunka with her eyes after that statement. Bunka in turn gets out of the bath and leaves. Drasta watches the affair and then nods to Furi.

Khzuro catches Drasta’s eye, and she splashes water onto him. He looks over to her with an annoyed huff but doesn’t comment. She shrugs. “At least it’s warm.”

“This one gives thanks for small mercies.”

The night comes upon the companions. They have a meal that’s a bit better than the last. There are a good bit of choices for food and the girls look better too. The beds are not as lumpy and overused. They have another peaceful night. The rain stops, and it again gets steamy for a while but by midnight it starts to dry out.

Khzuro sneaks into everyone’s room to use a prestidigitation spell on his companions while they sleep to help keep them clean too, but everyone seems rather clean except for Samo. He’s on the verge of stinking. Samo wakes up while Khzuro is doing it. He gets up and squats down pointing his finger at the kobold. Before he says anything, he stops suddenly and smells his armpits. He then smiles and goes back to bed.

Along the road the next day they come upon a scene. There are 20 men on the sides of the road being crucified. Ten are still alive and they are all westerners. There are boards underneath saying ‘Pirate’. Some plead with them to be set free. Only Drasta understands their words.

Samo and the two onna-bugeisha have no reaction to the men. They stare straight ahead as if they aren’t even there. Khzuro glances to the pirates then turns his head and continues along the road.

As Drasta starts to pass their pleads become frantic. “Elven! Please! I have family on the island of Thain!”
“We are not pirates just merchants looking for the famed silk of the far east”

“Help us please, Elven! They misjudged us!”

“Our ship just broke up and we washed ashore! Torm help us Let your hand touch the elvan’s heart.”

Drasta slows down a moment listening curiously, but she stays looking ahead. Bunka slows down, turns her head, and gives her a stern look. Khzuro also looks over but doesn’t seem inclined to investigate too much but watches his companions. He sees plainly the silent words between Bunka and Drasta. Samo and Furi take on the air of total dispassion as if the men are not even there. He cannot see Sei’s or Kinu’s reactions. He turns his head front not reacting further. (at least outwardly.)

Sei sighs, shakes his head and moves on.

Drasta stops a moment keeping her attention forward to Bunka no looking at the men only listening. “If you wish to know: They say they were merchants, and their ship was smashed on the rock. Though I would not think this brings any value to their judgement as it was given. Though if they are pirates truly, I would not venture these words as truth.

As she picks the pace back up the last man spits at her, “Fucking savage lover!”

Bunka states evenly, “Judgement has been passed. Justice is doing its part. Show no emotion when death is at hand. It is a weakness your enemy will use against you if you do.”

Khzuro looks aside but, whatever thoughts he has, he decides to keep to himself then suddenly recants. "Do you think what happened with them is potentially related in any way to our current task? This one is doubtful of that prospect, admittedly."

Drasta answers him. “We do not know the whole story, perhaps if we find the ones who placed them here then you would find your answer.”

Sei looks back. “We will see what those closer to it have to say.”

Khzuro, slightly upset says, “Events have a way of rippling, creating echoes and making effect after effect. But perhaps the ripple is merely a splash compared to more important matters. Should likely simply continue on our way."

The companions move on. After a while the pirates are forgotten. After a few more days they get to the temple and their favorite tea house. Sei heads to the temple first. Greeting the first person he meets with a bow he asks, “Hello all. Is Sango in?”

The monk guarding the gate bows and opens it for the party. He then goes inside. Everyone dismounts.
Everyone holds back except for Sei and Kinu who are directly at the steps of the temple. A young woman in clerical robes comes out and walks down the stairs. She looks just like all her sisters except one. Haruki is more beautiful, but Sando is completely unblemished and looks fitter. She bows to the party. “How may I help the shogunate of Barasume?”

Drasta stays back just watching curiously. Furi puts all her concentration on the young woman. She studies every move and facial expression.

Sei is the first to speak. “We have an issue of the divine on our hands and figured it wise to take one familiar with such matters with us. A minor god of a lake has become...quite angry and takes their rage out on fisherfolk and other such seafarers."

She looks at Sei quizzically. “All have heard of the god of the lake by now. I ask you why me. There are other older more competent priests and priestesses at temple?"

"Your name came up in the conversation. If you feel there is another more appropriate priest to send in your stead..."

She stops and seems to meditate. before answering. "I will get the high priestess of the sun goddess." She bolts up the stairs. You wait.” She bolts up the stairs. Fury frowns at the answer and seeing the girl bolt but says nothing. Samo looks confused and Bunka openly smirks.

Sei looks back to Furi. “Is there some reason you wanted Sango specifically?"

"Yes. It will be her that comes even if I have to drag her myself." Samo snorts at her answer.

Sei shakes his head and raises a brow. "...even over a more senior priest?"

Furi nods. Khzuro watches the others closely but sticks to observing for now.

Sango comes back with a much older human priestess. The priestess comes down using a cane Sango stands three stairs behind and off to the left. The old woman studies the group. "Your names?"

Drasta arches a brow at the cane. Khzuro nods, like he expected this.

Sei bows, “Sei, and my apprentice Kinu.”

Drasta bows her head a bit. “Drasta.”

Samo immediately bows. "Sir Samo in service to Lord Barasume."

Bunka also bows, "Lady Bunka in service to Lord Barasume."

Furi bows, " Lady Nishissajo Furi, second cousin to emperor Hojo and second inquisitor of the empire"
Khzuro goes last. “This one is Khzuro.”

The high priestess looks up at Seis towering form without a hint of fear. “I have many senior priests, priestesses, and monks much senior to Shinto Sango. Yet you ask for her. Why do I feel something else is going on being that the Barasume clan and an inquisitor are all here? Speak plainly please. You are in the presence of the gods."

As she waits for Sei six sparrows fly down from the trees and start to peck at offerings on the ground. Two house cats lazily come down the stairs and sit off to side. They sit and lazily watch the birds. The priestess notices them and turns her head back to Sei as he starts to speak.

Sei looks to Furi "If you have reason for Sango specifically...now's the time to speak up.”

"My own mission is of no consequence to this mission. My task has only ears for lord Barasume, the emperor and myself. My apologies Sei. It’s a need to know."

The old priestess laughs showing she has lost about 1/3rd if her teeth. "Come here Khzuro."

He nods to her and steps forward. Bunka uncharacteristically suddenly seems concerned.

She bends down and pats him on the head and speaks so only Sei, Kinu and Khzuro can hear. "You have a god that protects you Khzuro?"

Drasta stares at the interaction cautiously.

Khzuro enjoys all of the head pats, it's a literal touch of the divine here. Khzuro spends some time enjoying it. Khzuro closes his eyes, seeming to consider carefully what to say "No more than most, would think. They do have laws about when and where they can take action."

"Ah a smart answer and a veiled answer; No matter. If you have one tell him it is the same as always. The nobility plays their games while the common people suffer. They say their wars do not affect the common man but where do they get their soldiers that are not like these samurai. Most don’t even follow their own rules. They manipulate and machinate to gain power to become daimyo or shogun. It has been like this for 5 centuries and still is the same. I hope to see it end one day with a strong emperor that can put the shogunate in its place as Wa did a thousand years ago."

Sei furrows his brow, “I suppose it might be easier to take Sango if things get...challenging to maneuver through.

She then looks up at Sei. "Take her. If one hair on her head is parted, it is you who will answer, to me."

Sei nods slowly and bows "Understood."

Khzuro considers what the high priestess says, seeming to take a mental note.

The old woman turns around slowly, "Sango get your armor and other things. It will be a good experience for you. Learn from it and come back in one piece please." her head turns to Sei. "Or else ranger. You know who surrounds you now."

Khzuro answers her. “This one will do what they can to ensure their safety, honored elder.”

Sango helps the high priestess up the temple steps even with her complaints that she can do it herself and they disappear again.

Drasta stretches a bit and sighs after something pops. Sei turns to Furi apologizing. “Sorry about the confusion, I did not realize you had your own reasons for requiring Sango specifically.”

Furi nods her face a mask of dispassion. Bunka then decides to speak up. “The priestess will ride with me. Drasta behind.”

Before Drasta has time to answer Samo raises an eyebrow and says, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Bunka's face turns red, "I am the general of all female warriors of the Barasume Shogunate!"

Samo retorts to her, "And I am samurai. Know your place Onna-bugeisha!"

Bunka places the palm of her hand on her katana fingers still open and straight out. Samo looks her dead in the eyes and softly states, "That would be a grand mistake, Bunka."

Drasta quickly takes a step back quietly looking to Furi who watches the two silently and dispassionately studying both.

Khzuro saves the day. He looks at Bunka and the samurai. “Aw, it's nice you both care so much, you should hug, yip, yip!" "Is not a matter worth drawing blades over. We have an important mission. Focus, please."

Sei blinks in disbelief, “Now, can we step back and take a few deep breaths?" He then looks between Samo and Bunka questioningly. He then looks to Khzuro in a glance of quiet thankfulness.

Bunka slowly takes her hand away from her hilt. “We have a mission and need a priestess.”

Samo watches her carefully. "Right, Sei! Assign another to take care of miss Shinto. She does not sleep in the same Room as Lady Bunka… Ever!"

Sei nods, “I will watch over Sango myself then.”

Samo scratches his beard, “What about Kinu?”

She looks up at Sei. He clasps her shoulder with his hand. “"If you're comfortable on your own, Kinu, you can ride solo, otherwise you can pair with whoever else you choose."

“What about our nights?”

"Stick close to me if you wish for the camping, as long as Sango isn't bothered by being paired with the both of us.”

She almost pouts. “As you wish.”

Sie and Drasta notice Bunka is watching the whole affair and the wheels in her head are turning.

Sei then looks to Kinu and whispers to her. “On second thought...maybe it's best you stick with Bunka. Make sure she doesn't make any...foolish moves."

Kinu looks at Sei dreadfully. “……...ok.”

Drasta seems to be connecting some dots tilting her head only slightly.

Sango comes out from the back on a large and fine specimen of a brown racer. Her horsemanship is obviously far above par than even most samurai and would put most to shame.

Drasta smiles as Sango comes out thinking of Miwa.

Sei looks at Furi. "Is there anything else you want arranged for here before we set out?"

She has been meditating and listening since the fight. She looks up, “No Sei. We are.........fine now. all is in order and as it is supposed to be."

Sei begins to lead the party on the way to where they need to go.

Everyone goes back to the inn. They stay the night with Sango sleeping in Sei’s room. In the middle of the night at about 1am. Sango wakes up Sei.

He rolls over and looks at her from his bed, “Um… Something the matter?”

“You are being called to hunt. He says you are a brother.” She points to the window. I speak the language.
Sei gets up and looks out at whoever’s outside the window. There’s an old black wolf with a greying muzzle sitting outside of it. He smiles to the canine and goes outside to shapeshift when he's away from prying eyes.

The wolf runs into the woods. The two of them chase down a small Sika deer. He takes the kill and drags it deeper into the woods. There’s a small glen where there is already an ember pile and a spit. The fire can easily be restarted from the charcoal with a few sticks. He drops the kill and shape changes into an old monk. “Ah, I’m getting old. It won’t be a few years until I am called back to the mainland. Let’s give our meal proper rights and stoke the fire back to life shall we, Sei?”

Sei unshifts and bows in prayer before tending to the fire with a smile.

The old monk cuts the backstrap out then the hams. He separates the liver and heart from the other organs and coats them with spices and puts them in a frying pan. Sei smiles broadly at the smell of fried venison liver.

While the rest is cooking, he cuts the liver and heart in half and puts the pieces on two slabs of thin slate and offers one to Sei. He takes the slab and begins to eat. “Thank you for the hunt, sir. It is not often I get to stretch my legs with a fellow in such manner.”

He nods and grunts eating his half of heart. “I’ve been watching and listening like I always do. You seem growing more and more concerned and stressed. Anything a brother can do to help?”

"It's just...going to be a difficult mission ahead, having to pacify a god, when I can barely keep the peace among my own companions."

He shakes his head. "You have three samurai with you from two different clans. Egos. Going to be difficult keeping the peace. Why the Shinto girl? and why an inquisitor?"

"Not sure why her specifically but her priestly knowledge will only be of aid in our quest, no? And the inquisitor is here to try to .... take measure of both me and one of my companions."

The monk starts on the liver. “Which one?”

“The elven figure.”

“You sure about that?”

"As to the inquisitor's measures? Yes, I am sure."

"Why would the imperial court be interested in an elven from another land so much they send an inquisitor?"

"She is seeking position in the court."

The monk laughs. “As a Besshikime? I do not buy it. Something else is going on. Barasume's star is rising. He only has one son though. At least for now. And his son is a ne’er do well at least now he is. Maybe the emperor is getting nervous about Barasume's territory, maybe not. but something bigger is happening. I would bet my eye tooth on that.

"Think like a noble, Sei. What are the two ways daimyos and Shoguns gain power and territory with?"

“Marriage and conquest?”

"Aye marriage and conquest. Barasume has taken all the land he needs to force the emperor to make him a shogun. Now what are his assets and how does the emperor prevent him from gaining territory through marriage via those same assets?" He peppers the backstrap on the spit and coats it with butter, ginger, and garlic.
Sei nods lightly "It'll be interesting to see what happens from here."

"You’re in the game now Sei. I feel sorry for you. Your right smack in the middle of the game and the stakes are high. Don’t lose your head."

"Aye, best to focus on the mission at hand."

"Aye. I'll keep watch from a distance. I got your back brother."

"Thank you."

"Remember to use your head, think like one of them nobles from time to time. they can be a sorry lot but sometimes they can surprise you too."

“Aye.”

He takes the backstrap off the spit and wraps it in some burlap. “This is for the road. I'll eat the hams and ribs tomorrow. You have a good night. Watch out for Bunka she wants to kill every last Shinto she can." He offers the package to Sei with both hands.

Sei takes the package with a bow. “Thank you. May your hunts be productive.” The old monk shapeshifts into a wolf and prances deeper into the woods. Sei slips back into the inn and heads back to sleep after packing the roast backstrap away.

Everyone else did not have a good night. The walls of the home are mostly paper and bamboo and Samo seems to be in an epic snoring competition with the gods themselves. Khzuro looks around to see who might want to give snuggles and head pats for the night but only Samo is in his room.

Khzuro wonders if waters breathing will overt the sound. Sadly, it doesn’t help with snoring. Furi in the next room is tossing and turning. She is sure to be all sunshine and unicorns when she finally gets up and Drasta is her roommate all night. She is woken up from revelry and decides to write in her book for 3 or 4 hours.

Khzuro just tries to do the best he can with Samo. At least he's fun to be around. For kobolds too? Samo grabs up Khzuro along his waist and snuggles the small kobold deep in his chest like a teddy bear. Khzuro Resigns himself to that if that does happen, who knows if he can slip out later... What kind of kobold wouldn't want to be his teddy bear for the night?

In the morning you all pack up. Sei mentions to Drasta quietly to keep an eye on Bunka.

The roads are very clean. They pass several patrols of various minor clans and daimyos of the Barasume shogunate as you move through their territories. You come to the lake village in the late afternoon after several more days of travel. Upon seeing the mons on the group’s sleeves, villagers make way for them. They get to the middle of town when an elder man with a cane meets them in the village square.

Sei dismounts and bows to the elder. “Hello there. We are here to address the issue we heard you were having with the tempests of an angry god. That said, mind telling me the story from the beginning. Would be a good starting point for further investigations.”

“Ah! The shogun and emperor himself have sent you! I am Hiroshi. Welcome! You may all stay in my home while you are here as honored guests.

As to our troubles? Yes! Our local god Sanshow ou Okii, He is upset and eats fishermen. Sometimes those that walk along the lake too. We do not know why he is so angry with us when he protected us before. Hopefully you in your enlightenment can calm the god.”

Sei nods along "We hope to do so. Do you know of any...unusual happenings in the days, weeks, even months preceding the first storms of Sanshow?"

It is a very large lake, master. 17,000 acres hemmed in by swamps. To get to the other side of the lake you must take a path through the north swamp to the textile plant on the other side.”

"Hm, as in a works of silk raisers and weavers or?"

"The factory dyes the silk. it is our only other means of income other than fishing and has been here for 2 centuries.”

Sei nods "How long ago did the tempests start? I wonder if anything changed in the dying-workings to trigger this."

“We noticed the god acting strangely about 6 months ago. He would lay on the rocks on this side of the lake rather than his home and started to attack the fishermen about 2 months later.”

"Has there been anything strange reported about the waters of the lake itself? Off colors, odors, tastes? Also, does he normally live in the water?"

"There have been less fish in our nets recently. We think that Sanshow has been eating more leaving the villagers with less."

"But no noticeable changes in the lake's waters themselves? It could very well be that Sanshow himself is being starved by the same phenomenon that is causing less fish to turn up in your nets."

Sei and Drasta notice the mayor’s eyes shift slightly. “No! No! There are always smells coming from the swamp here and there, but they are swamps after all.”

Drasta keeps her eyes directed at him as he is speaking with some concern.

The mayor continues, “" Oh! Dear! let me take you to his shrine by the docks. I see you have a priestess with you perhaps now with one of the clothe she may put Sanshow's heart at peace. Come! Come!"

Sei frowns and replies, “Hm. Thank you for your time" then to the rest of the party "I think we'll have to examine the dye works as part of this" nodding to the mayor now "Certainly. We can start there, then move on to our next stop."

Drasta nods to Sei agreeing.

The mayor steps up, "Oh wait! wait there is plenty of time in the morning. The sun is halfway down. It will be night before you get there. Please accept my hospitality. It would be wrong to travel all this way without food and rest."

Sei calmly considers then answers the mayor. I suppose that we could stay the night first and try to gather more information in town. Is there anyone else who we can speak to who'd know more?"

Everyone in the party sees that the mayor is hesitating just a bit too long, but he finally answers the question. "No, no it is a complete mystery to all of us." As he finishes, Khzuro wanders off to get what he can from the other locals.

Sei narrows his eyes slightly. "You sure there's nobody who's like...noticed something odd going on and could speak to us about it?"

"Oh, only the fishermen going too close to the swamps they tend to see things that are not there. The swamp gas you know."

Drasta raises an eyebrow at the mayor. Sei continues his interrogation. "Do any of the fisherfolk have...stories they wish to tell?"

"Other than afraid of being eaten? not that I have heard."

The party gets to the mayor's house. It’s the size of a large tea house itself. His 4 wives come out with 13 children. It looks rather opulent and new with fresh paint. "Come, come my wives will serve you the finest of meals."

Drasta pulls her hood back as they enter the home. Upon seeing her the mayor stops not knowing what she is or what to say. He leads you into the home which has room enough for his entire family and the whole of the party to sleep comfortably.

While the bulk of the party goes to the mayor’s mansion, Khzuro walks along the market asking questions and listening to the current rumors in town for help in the investigation. The area is rift with all sorts of rumors about monsters in the swamps, and other things. One fisherman reports strange translucent petals in the water on the other side of the shore.

An old woman is talking with another while buying straw she says, “Before Samshow would come in and out of the water and seemed to have a place to rest. For the last 8 months he seems to be ever wandering the lake instead.”

He hears a man fighting with his wife about the new owner of the textile plant. He thinks she’s sleeping with him and will call the authorities if he finds out for sure she is. She denies everything. Khzuro blinks confusedly regarding the discussion but doesn’t press the matter.

He also overhears two villagers discussing how bad the swamps smell of late. ‘Like death.”

He also hears someone swearing they saw fields of flowers behind the swamps on the other side of the lake saying they got lost and had to back track seeing the rows and rows of flowers.

After getting what information he can, Khzuro goes to head back towards the mayor’s house to rejoin the group. He notices the same things as they did. It’s obvious the mayor is quite wealthy with 4 wives and a house the size of a small daimyo’s castle. It’s brand new and freshly painted.

You sit down to a fine meal served by the mayor’s wives. Furi sits to the right of the mayor, she has the imperial mon on her sleeve. Sei sits to his left. One older daughter is seated beside Sei which makes Kinu obviously jealous. Another of his older daughters sits by Samo. and the older sons sit by Bunka and Drasta though the boy beside Drasta looks slightly scared of her.

Sei is polite but distant to the young girl beside him. Drasta sits quietly and formally giving a half smile to the child beside her.

They are served Kobi beef, giant squid, Maui-Maui, and whale meat along with vast quantities of ginger and other herbal garnishes and sauces. All of it seems like delicacies not even Kyo partakes in very much. The soba you are served has Uni in it.

Sei partakes in the delicacies but takes it in stride, not really seeming particularly...blown away?
The mayor after slurping the last juices of his soba grunts, "Nothing but our finest for the Shoguns emissaries." Furi takes everything in rather well, but you can tell she is carefully observing the family.
Drasta takes part but keeps her eyes watching the mayor specifically and curiously.

Khzuro walks in after half the meal is finished. The mayor jumps up. "I forgot about the kami. Come, come eat your fill little one. May we make wishes?"

"Oh, um, certainly. But um, they might not come true in the way you expect fair warning." He gets lots of head rubs and Enjoys every moment of head rubs. Wonders if he should have said no.

After the meal the mayor and his family retire to more private living quarters leaving all of you about an hour to do what you would like to do. Khzuro is sure to fill in the party about the rumors he'd collected, well, except the fight between the man and the wife. He doesn't deem that relevant.

Sei comments, “"The smell of the swamps is worrisome, yes, and the flowers are curious as well...anything else, though?"

Khzuro nods, “"The behavior of the divine one. Wandering the lake instead of resting. Likely restless. Wonder what could have happened eight months ago to start that."

Sei thinks and asks, “That seems consistent with what I've been told...was there anything else you heard, though?"

Khzuro sighs, “Was a dispute regarding the textile plant. Of sleeping around. Not sure if true or not. Doesn't seem important to us."

Sei continues his questioning. “"Hm... who from the textile plant was involved, or said to be involved?"

Sango mentions, "I will go to the shrine and try to calm the god in the morning." She takes out a folding bag with many kinds of incense and tries to figure out which to use.

Khzuro continues talking with Sei. "Not sure who, overheard an argument of a man and lady. Man accused the lady of sleeping with the owner of the textile plant. Lady denied accusations."

Sei looks over to Sango "It may be best if we do not try to do that right away, instead looking towards the root cause of the trouble first" then back to Khzuro "The owner of the textile plant being accused of sleeping around, curious...was anything else about them mentioned?"

"Still doesn't seem relevant. We have more important things to worry about than mating habits."
"I'm still wondering if there was anything else let slip about the textile plant's owner when that tale was being told..."

"Just that he was apparently mating with a lady who is already mating with another. Nothing about their actual work or business relating to the divine one. Doubt the divine one cares overmuch about human mating habits."

"That they do not, but when those stories are told, it's common for them to be 'spiced' if you will with extra details regarding goings-on around the figures in question..."

"Probably. Didn't hear anything else though." Then he thinks, “Actually, now that they mention it... they did off-hand mention the textile plant recently changed owners. But unless they're doing something like bargaining with demons in there, it's not something the divine one would be angry about."

"That's an important note, we'll have to follow up on that in the morning and see when that change of ownership happened, see if it lines up with the tempests."

It gets dark lanterns are lit. and everyone has enough room to sleep in pairs. The daughter starts to follow Sei and she suddenly trips as she starts to pass Kinu. One follows Samo into his room and the two sons try to follow Bunka and Drasta. Bunka flatly states that she’s married and the son leaves. Drasta shakes her head to the child explaining she has no interest.

Sei makes sure that nothing weird has happened between the daughter and Kinu. The daughter gets the point and leaves.

Everyone goes to bed for the night.

Re: The Kozakura Campaign

Post by Winterhawk99 »

Most of the group is woken up by voices outside. Samo stays sleeping contently in his bed with the daughter of the mayor. Sei starts waking and goes to the window to listen to the commotion going on, so does Khzuro. Drasta slips into a hidden position by the window and her room. She stares out of it listening intently.

She sees five men in front of the mayor’s home with the mayor himself and his eldest wife. The mayor and she are holding hands tightly. The man is the center is a large man of 5’ 9”. He is speaking softly with the mayor while the other men have their hands folded in their sleeves.

Khzuro is rooming with Bunka. She is against the wall trying to listen. Khzuro keeps out of sight too and tries his best to listen to what the group is saying. So far, he cannot make anything out of it.

Drasta cannot see much in detail with her infravision but there seem to be small spots just on the other men’s clothes that have a different heat shade than the rest of them. They are very small and at the corners.

After a moment she sees the big man pointing to the road out of town. Both Drasta and Sei hear him say, “They need to be out of this town by tomorrow sundown or you'll find my patronage dry up. do you understand Hiroshi."

The mayor replies, “Of course sir, I'll do everything in my power to get them out."

"Make sure it happens." The man leaves with his people. The mayor and his wife go back inside.

Drasta looks to see what Samo is doing. She sees the girl laying on top of him and he’s snoring up a storm.

Sei stays where he is not making any moves just yet. He makes mental notes of things he needs to address with the party come morning. Khzuro didn’t hear anything so just stays put and sleeps with one eye on Bunka the entire night. The rest of the night is uneventful. They wake up as the sun starts to rise.

Sango prepares herself to invoke the shrine. Samo squeezes into his armor making grunting noises from the huge dinner. Bunka silently goes through her routine and gets on her armor. Furi suddenly decides her light armor is best today and goes to her horse retrieving it and stowing her heavy armor away.

Sei gets ready in his normal routine then addresses the mayor "Thank you for the hospitality. Before we depart, I do have one question for you. I received word that the textile plant you mentioned changed hands recently. How long ago did that happen?"

the mayor bows politely, "About two years ago, he's never fired any of the village women and I am assured he runs things just as the old owner did."

"Interesting. Thank you."

Drasta dresses herself in her armor with all the weapons where they belong keeping her hood down until they exit with her hair half pulled back loosely. After a light breakfast they gather outside.

Sei starts off. "I think we head for the textile works first thing. We need to get to the bottom of what's going on there. That said, I overheard things overnight that made me think that the backers of the textile works are not happy about us sniffing around... Or at the very least, the benefactors of something in town."

Drasta affirms what he says. “Indeed, there is something happening in this place, it feels uneasy.”

"Quite! We gather what we can from the textile plant and then move on, we may have to camp outside of town even from the sounds of things."

Sango interrupts them, “I must pray at the shrine.”

Sei grumbles at her. "Like, first thing?"

Khzuro gives her some support. "Good idea."

She nods "I'll do a ritual all day every day to try to calm the god."

The kobold asks, "Do you wish this one to accompany?"

A bit perturbed now Sei asks, “"Is there a reason you think that rituals alone will succeed with what provoked them left unaddressed?"

She nods It could be dangerous I may anger him further depending on what’s wrong.” She considers, "If I can calm him and keep him placid perhaps it will give you time to investigate."

Khzuro nods emphatically, “Then... perhaps it best for the two of us go then. Not sure why the divine one is angry, but their anger is usually directed."

Sei gives up on their logic. “"Aye, perhaps it is indeed best if you two head to the shrine then, see about buying us time, and if you can speak with them, glean insight about just what has provoked their wrath."
The priestess and kobold ready themselves to go to the shrine.

Furi asks, "What about protection? if the god does get angry, he may come looking for them."

Bunka says, "I'll go."

Samo side eyes her, "No you won’t!"

Khzuro tells Sei, “"No amount of protection will defend us against the god. Not of the martial kind. We should do what we can to avoid offending them and provoking their wrath. It's... probably best that this one and the priestess go alone. The divine one is less likely to be angry with this one. And probably won't be as quick to anger at a priestess. Not sure the rest of you will be duly protected."

Sei affirms the logic of the situation. “Khzuro has a very good point. No amount of mortal skill will save one from divine wrath, so it's best if that group is limited to those familiar with divine matters.”
Furi watches everyone then says, “It’s agreed then.”

Sei leads all in the party except for Khzuro and Sango north to the textile plant. At the edge of the swamp there is a foot path with bridges to let the women of the village go to the factory. The swamp smells foul and lightly of death.

He leads the party carefully down the footpath. “No kidding on the swamp smelling bad."

Drasta covers her face with a cloth. “Indeed, quite rank with death.”

As they walk across one of the bridges one of the boards snaps under Samo’s boot but he’s dexterous enough to avoid his leg going through. Sei comments, “Hm. Rickety it seems, or perhaps undermaintained."

Once across it, several in the group notice something odd in the water about 10 years from the bridge. Sei looks at it more intently. It looks like something dead. "Uh oh, I think we know where the fish are going..." He moves to examine it a bit more closely to try to tell what sort of corpse it is, fish, person, or something else.

Drasta places a hand on the hilt of her sword and stands near Sei ready. They find it’s a headless torso with one arm. The hand is white from being waterlogged so long. It seems the other limbs and the head were torn off.
Sei looks around finding tracks in abundance. They are from saltwater crocodiles. "Crocodile work, likely of a saltwater type" frowning softly "Not an explanation for the dead fish, though. Let us move on."

Drasta looks back. “Best stay out of the water. There are crocs.”

They move on and get to the plant about noon. There's a bamboo fence around it. There are two guards. Sei heads to the plant entrance, dismounting with a bow to the guards "Hello there. We are with Barasume. Can you take us to speak with whoever runs this operation on a day-to-day basis?"

The guard bows politely and one goes from the gate to the plant. after about 20 minutes a large bulky man comes out. He’s in simple robes and seems unarmed. He goes through the gate and bows. “Greetings honorable guests I am the owner, Gorou. How may I help you.”

Sei bows him a greeting "I hope we are not interrupting you too much at the moment? We do have some questions about recent goings-on in the area as well as if there have been changes in how the plant's operated over the past couple of years."

“Of course. You are?”

"Sei Liu, with the Barasume court, and my companions are with Barasume as well. Perhaps, to start, talk us through the process you use to dye the fabrics, from start to finish? Or walk us through it, if that's possible, better yet."

"It is a great honor to be in the presence of such magnitude. If you wish I will show you the whole of the operation." The man has an easy manner about himself.

Sei nods "That would be most appreciated, thank you." He waves his hand showing everyone the way. Sei follows along, head on a swivel as he goes, looking out for anything odd.

Gorou gives the group a tour of the plant. The women work with the various dyes as product comes in from the west. Everyone can see the carts on the other side of the building in a fenced area to keep the crocodiles out. There are several men overseeing the women in the plant.

As they walk along the floor Drasta looks at Sei seeing that the building is perhaps a bit smaller than it looks from outside. She points up at the ceiling. Sei looks upwards at Drasta’s cue. The owner turns, “Is everything alright then?”

Drasta walks over and whispers to Sei, “Does this place seem smaller on the inside?”

He whispers back. “Maybe? We’ll have to investigate further.” Drasta nods.

The place is very clean, in fact sparkling clean. Waste-water seems to be carted off to places unknown. Sei takes note and asks, “Perhaps you could show me how waste from the vats and such is handled around here?"

Gorou takes you to the back. "We place the wastewater from the vats into giant clay pots. They are then carted off to a dumping ground several villages away. I would not want to endanger the lake itself especially when a salamander god protects it." He smiles.

Sei nods slightly in acknowledgement. Samo uses a piece of grass to pick his teeth. Bunka remains silent and Furi is her usual observant self. Sei then asks, "Can you show us the space above us?"

"I am sorry. There is a lot of rot on the floor above. I need to be a little more profitable before I can make renovations. It’s very dangerous up there. No admittance. What would I do if one of the shoguns men or women fell through the floor and died. I cannot allow it."

Sie then glances at Drasta "Can you excuse me and my companion then? We need to step outside for a little while."

The owner smiles, “Of course.”

Sei says to the others, “Feel free to ask the owner what questions you can come up with." Before stepping out with Drasta, addressing her quietly, "Do you have the bird-blade with you? 'T'would be our best ally in this endeavor, let us explore the second floor without fear of the floor caving in under us."

She taps the hilt on her side talking softly. “Of course.”

“Let us both employ that then.”

Drasta looks around for prying eyes, but the men look rather sharp and seem to be monitoring. Sei whispers to Drasta "Can you get us somewhere out of sight of the guards?"

She leads Sei around a corner away from anyone in the area before using the runed sword to turn them both into ravens. Sei takes to the wing with Drasta right behind. He leads her up to the outside of the second floor. There are no windows or entrances they can find. There are some small seams in the walls and one on the roof that has been patched with pitch. There is some faint light that coming from the seams and there is an odd smell but no opening big enough to see through it.

Sei now leaves and leads Drasta on a flight into the first floor again, trying to attract as little attention as possible. He looks to work his way towards whatever a stair or latter to the second floor might be. He finds a stairway that is partially hidden round a far corner of the factory. He leads her up the stairs to the second floor.

They find themselves in front of a closed door at the top with a small peep window that slides open. Sei perches on an eave. There are sounds on the other side of the door of a cauldron boiling. Sei flies to the doorhandle and lands on it to try to push it down.

It pushes down and opens. Everyone inside suddenly jumps up. You see 20 men and women in there. There is a boiling cauldron and a 10-foot-high mound of flower petals. Some of the women are shoveling the petals in the cauldron while other women are making linen dresses The dye the petals make is a bluish purple. The men were playing Chinese chess. Their shirts are off because of the heat and every one of them is covered in tattoos. The women are clothed but their bare arms are almost entirely covered in tattoos too. They see the birds and start to draw crossbows.

Sei quickly flies a maneuver to get back out of that room post haste. Drasta quickly pursues Sei, reading herself to vanish. Several crossbow bolts fly through the doorway, but They get away. Behind them, they hear the door slam shut and lock. Sei settles onto Drasta's wing now, hoping she can find a spot they can change out of bird form safely at. Drasta slips upside down grabbing Sei's claws and dive- bombs out the way they came with great speed back to where they were "meeting."

Sei squawks to Drasta, hoping to signal her to find them a place they can revert the shapeshift. They find themselves behind the carts again. After they dispel the shapeshifting, Sei then leads Drasta back to rejoin with the group. Drast follows along quietly keeping her eyes peeled.

As they come back, the owner is speaking with the others. a man comes up to him and whispers in his ears. The owner grins "You see it is so rotted up there that even birds’ won't nest there. I must get that second floor fixed soon or the whole place will come down on us." Furi just nods looking attentive. Sei stays quiet at the exchange.

His man goes back into the factory. The owner smiles, "Now you see. There is nothing here that could anger the local god. We take good care of the lake and its people. Rest assured."

Drasta opens a book and makes some notes quietly on the conversation, noting also what was seen above nodding to the owner.

Once the other man is well out of earshot, Sei whispers to Furi "We'll have to step outside and talk further, as a party" She nods to him.

Sei considers everything and says, “I don't think we can safely head back to town, either. we'll either have to break camp and return in the morning, or step outside and circle up away from prying eyes then step back in and deal with this."

Drasta smirks with a light chuckle. “Even the birds do not nest there.”
