SQL Maintenance

Post by Winterhawk99 »

Kobra and I worked hard for about three hours today on SQL maintenance in both C-panel and in the Admin part of the ACP panel. The site should work for users much better now. We were getting Max_User_ Connections errors.

I believe we fixed it. We tested it for a 1/2 hour later switching between the ACP and main forums all seems to be better now and the site comes up much faster when We exited it and re-entered.

I want to thank Kobra for all his help and efforts in this and other server problems over the last year. His expertise was a wonderful help and saved me hours of work.

Thank You, Kobra.

Can't seem to knock this dog out yet. We will work on this tomorrow or until we can get it cleaned out. It seems to be a syntax error in the SQL Scripting and we haven't found it yet.

So the site may be up and down a bit. You might get momentarily knocked off while we run maintainance but Kobra and I will make it right in the next week or two.

Kobra took a great deal of time out of his schedule to work with the SQL here on Harvest Moon. It seems like he took care of the problem. Everything seems Hunky-Dory now. I appreciate all the time you took to look at this Kobra......Thank you. I'm sure my readers appreciate it too. :)

Kobra and I worked for several days and things seem to have settled down quite a bit. I think we may have got it all. Things like this happen from time to time. It has been a long time since I have had trouble with the site so I guess I was due.

It was a bit exciting for me to think things through and fix what was wrong. I'm sure Kobra feels the same way. We will keep monitoring the situation, but it looks like the worst of the errors are over. :)

After looking around and going to sources I believe that the site was attacked by a very common attack.

I went to a source that knows about these things, and this is what I said about it:

My site was attacked by bots over the last few days. I should have figured. It looks like Kobra and I took care of things finally. it was a bit exhilarating trying to find out what was wrong and then dealing with it. Basically, the bots clogged up the system and kept giving me SQL errors (MAX_USER_CONNECTIONS) errors. I figure it was the developers of The Dragon's Neck that did it. These things just don't appear after making a review like I did. For every action (heh) I cut off all ips that seemed suspicious from my c-panel. Kobra helped a lot.
That seemed to clear things up.

This is what my source said: yeah. Those attacks are pretty easy to deal with. And they're usually done from a bot net of infected users. If you can definitively tie it back to TDN, then you can pin a felony on them
but normally that service is purchased, so that's unlikely
considering who the service is purchased from though, that's a RICO case
still, banning the IPs is what you need to do. If it only happens with a select number of IPs, then they aren't going to do it again
it's possible to coordinate with various white hat groups (usually professional technicians who advertise) to get those IPs banned from a lot more services, since they're likely an infected botnet, but be very careful with this route and please just coordinate with people you know rather than going searching for a rando to help.
but you have no obligation to spend that much effort on it
to make more users and more IPs, they would either need to infect more computers or build more computers and buy more internet connections. So, either way, you come out ahead in that calculus.
because it's possible to purchase this from a server farm these days, most server hosts require payment upfront for the first month of service. Most have defenses against this kind of program too, and if they try to go that route, their credit card info might be used to track down who did it
so, if it stops, they probably got caught.

more than likely, you have users who keep tabs open on your website taking up some of those connections. Some might be bots looking to harvest your writing for their LLMs, since you're a good writer. Some are probably just users who follow your work for pure enjoyment.

I don't really know if the staff of The Dragon's Neck did this or an individual from there, but it does go to show you have some very bad people there if it was done by them. I made some great friends there like Keila, Luthias, and Isilme but there are some there I believe are very evil people. I don't think it was a Quo incidence that my site got attacked as I finished my review.

Whether or not it was TDN or someone else Now you know how to fix this type of attack. go to your c-panel find your visitors and if you see concurrent ips clogging up the system thats probably the bots. block all of them in a series and that should take care of it.
