Re: She Came from the Sea
Mingzhu goes to the mayor’s office with Zsikhou following behind. As she walks in, she bows, “Greetings, Mayor.”
When Zsikhou shows up, the mayor is jittery and nervous but keeps his composure "Oh... greetings. We were..." He looks at Fwangzhu, then looks to Mingzhu "Can we help you?”
The shamaness nods, “I will have need of Fwangzhu tonight but wanted to come and see how you are doing and if you would need anything? May we sit with you?"
The mayor breathes out a sigh of relief, nodding, inviting them to sit "News of the demise of this... Khan is welcome. I do hope we won't have any more trouble from their ilk."
She thinks a moment then replies, “the corsairs are still a problem, but we are working on it."
He leans back "I've been trying to do what I can for the villages, while you were away."
"I plan on a walk to all of them in the next few days. Can you help me assess?" Mingzhu answers. Fwangzhu nods. She continues, “How is each village doing and how may I be of service to them?”
The mayor heaves a heavy sigh "I'm afraid the picture is still bleak. The good news at least is that Rhakku is fully recovered. Their elder has agreed to aid Tsaboru as well. Thanks to the food influx, Tsaboru is doing better. As long as there are no further disasters, they should be able to hold on until they can grow a new rice crop."
She nods, “Sudzuki? Golamaru?”
He leans back "Suduzki is... a different picture. Many of their people are used to... well, the affluence the Yakuza afforded them. They're not adjusting well. I'll need to find someone who is both strong, gentle, and steadfast against corruption to place as their elder. It's a high bar and it hasn't been easy finding one."
Mingzhu nods, "I plan on sleeping in the graveyard and calling elder's past to help me find people as such"
Then he shakes his head "I'm afraid the situation in Golamaru is... bleak. They are still on the border of orc and goblin territory, and while the horde is scattered, they have no fighting men, and no leadership. I fear the village may have to be abandoned."
Fwangzhu looks aside, a gruff, glum nod "I figure they can settle in on the other villages, but it's better to spread fishing villages, better catch that way, less stress on the land and sea."
Mingzhu thinks, "Fwangzhu......... can you naturally speak to animals?"
He huffs "Not in the way you're probably thinking, why? Animals don't have conversations the way humans do. It's a lot more about body language and impression." He says.
"What if we could find some animals to help protect the village. If we could convince them to help the village until it’s back up on its feet again?" Mingzhu asks.
He huffs, shaking his head "Doubt that'd work. Not unless you use your shaman magic for that. But only a few animals can be domesticated like that. The rest won't work that way."
"I would use my magic to speak to them yes. Try to convince them to help defend the villagers for perhaps some food or a place to rest, then convince the villagers that the animals are there to help. It would be a mutual partnership for a time. The villagers could leave small scraps for them fish for bear and stuff and perhaps a bedding area where all are safe at night? I also think you would be a great help in such an endeavor."
"Eh..." Fwangzhu shakes his head "I know at least from my own instincts... that most animals would not be very inclined to do that. More inclined to keep to their own sett, not step on another's territory, especially a potential predator's."
"I'm not looking to call rabbits, Fwangzhu, looking for bear, eagles, osprey, large cats if they are in the area." Mingzhu asserts.
He huffs "Large cats would just do their own thing. Even after making a bargain. Can't rely on them." He shakes his head "I don't think it'll work beyond short term solutions. And you'd basically need to be there to look after them the whole time. I mean it could work if we both settled down to work on it for a few years. But are you willing to do that?" Fwangzhu looks to her "We still got the Corsairs and that other nonsense to deal with."
"Ok, What, would you suggest to turn around Golamaru's fortunes?"
Fwangzhu considers, a huff "I worked with them a long time..." He considers... "Honestly, it's not just that there's not a lot left of em and that they're right near goblin and orc territory, but the fact that their elder and many of their people defected to side with a Youkai cultist is a constant source of pain."
He pauses "Best thing for them might be to migrate. Abandon the village and set up elsewhere. New village or integrate into the others."
"One or two things we can work on while we are there?" Mingzhu says while she thinks about it. Then she goes on, “"Ok, you know them very well which would be best for them. to relocate or integrate?"
Fwangzhu nods aside "I was talking with the mayor about that, actually. Regarding Suduzki. I figure some of them could migrate to Rhakku, bunch could migrate to Suduzki. Maybe, could set up some fishing posts further south." He huffs "Not a great solution, but sometimes you gotta make the best of a bad one."
"Would the villagers themselves accept that?” Mingzhu asks.
"Rhakku's elder would, I'm sure." The mayor speaks. "He's quite sympathetic towards them, given what almost happened to his own village. Suduzki is going to be a challenge but..."
Fwangzhu huffs "They gotta learn to earn their keep again."
"I have three questions I can put to the elders tonight...... The first two will be about finding a good elder for Sudzuki. How about we do this. I will ask the elders if they know of a good guardian for Golamaru so the people can stay, and the guardian can defend them to rebuild...........baring that we can speak to the elder of Rhakku for some of the population and help the others those that are more apt to take risks to integrate into Suduzki?"
Fwangzhu huffs "Just so you know, where they go is their choice. If they want to stay, or go, that's their business. Just so we're clear. And helping them out where they make their choices."
The mayor looks aside, then looks to Mingzhu, a nod "I've been working on that. I do beg patience on this matter; it does take some time. As for a Guardian... I would normally suggest Fwangzhu, but..."
Mingzhu nods, “I would not force anyone to go to one or another or even stay. just present the situation to them."
Fwangzhu grunts, "I put an axe to their old man's skull during that battle. Me being their protector would be incredibly fucking awkward."
"Something that can be overcome if you are willing to work at it Fwangzhu?" The shamaness insists.
Fwangzhu huffs, "Don't you guys need me to go axe those other bastards and Youkai causing trouble?"
"What is more important to you, Fwangzhu?" Mingzhu replies.
Fwangzhu huffs "To be honest, I wouldn't mind sticking around to protect these people. They definitely need it... but after seeing that shit on that cursed island..." There's a pause. She waits. He huffs "Only so much we can do here. Those horsemen fuckers are dead. The Daimyo's losers are called off for now. If I can axe some Corsair bastards and get the ships flowing again, that's all the better for this island's people."
The mayor looks on, nodding "He does have a point. Unfortunately, many of these issues aren't going to be solved overnight. And some scars will take time to heal. He can protect Golamaru well, but I know that alone won't be enough to save the village."
She turns her attention to the mayor, “Is there anything you can do to help Mayor?"
He considers, then looks at Mingzhu "You have a boat now, correct? I suppose this is outside my purview, I largely look over Sakurajima, but... there are neighboring islands which you should be able to visit now. Normally, we hear word from them but... well, we've lost contact since. Some of them I've never even been to."
She asks the mayor first, "You think there is trouble or a possible relocation?" Then she turns to Fwangzhu, "What do you think of this. You protect Golamaru and when we go out, you come with us. When we return you go back to the village to be its guardian again. We are in and out and only out for a few days. We will call you each and every time we go out."
Fwangzhu shrugs, then huffs "I don't know about being Golamaru's guardian forever, but. If you need me to go axe some bastards, I'm game."
The mayor looks over, shaking his head "I'll be completely honest, I don't know. But the Corsairs have been hitting everyone. And if what is said about... everything is true then... I wouldn't be surprised."
Mingzhu nods to both, “A temporary situation, Fwangzhu. We will eventually succeed or die most likely but having you in Golamaru while we are ashore will help the people immensely and perhaps the old elders will know of something or someone to help you. How does that sound to you? As for the corsairs, we will work on the situation so that some of the other islands can get through again. " She nods.
Fwangzhu shrugs, "Sure, sounds fine. Whatever."
Mingzhu smiles........ "I need a drink. Let us enjoy each other’s company until night falls and we have to go to the graveyard."
Fwangzhu shrugs "Sure, works for me. Dizzy Panda?"
"Sounds good to me." Mingzhu says with a bit of weariness.
When Zsikhou shows up, the mayor is jittery and nervous but keeps his composure "Oh... greetings. We were..." He looks at Fwangzhu, then looks to Mingzhu "Can we help you?”

Re: She Came from the Sea
After Mingzhu and Zsikhou go to the mayor’s office. T’kharr turns to Balan and Silgara. “Which trading company do we want to hit first?”
.
Balan pulls out a coin. “Shall we flip for it?” He then shrugs and puts the coin away. “The seer will know we are coming. It may be best to head to the one that will give us more trouble.”
"I take it that'd be the seer then, or?" T’kharr asks.
Balan laughs heartily. “They do present the most trouble with their questions.”
"I reckon we will start there then; you can take the lead for this one?" T’kharr defers. Silgara shrugs listening to the conversation.
Balan considers the situation. “I will do my best unless they wish to speak with either of you.”
The three march over to the Golden Sails ship. As they go to board, one of the guards arrives and approaches them. He looks them over, then a nod "You are expected. Please come with me." As they follow the guards, Silgara rubs her eyes, wondering if they say that to everyone.
Balan, T'kharr, and Silgara are once again escorted to Mrishnavurti's office. She looks over at a Crystal ball, then looks up as they enter. "So, it seems the threads of fate have brought you back to me. Please, come sit and make yourselves comfortable."
T’kharr seats herself, Silgara sits down, though seems to watch Mrishnavurti for casting gestures. The seer looks over. “Well, you have come seeking answers, then? Well, ask what you wish."
Balan looks between Silgara and T'kharr. “Aye, it would seem our fate has brought us here and with some dangerous information we are unsure of.” Mrishnavurti cranes her head, still keeping her hands hovering around the crystal ball, she waits for Balan to proceed. “We have removed one of the pawns in this game that is being played and discovered there may be a demon among this place that may be controlling one of the trades. Have you noticed anything of this in your sight?”
"Ah..." She nods, "I see. So, you have learned of them. I suspected from my visions that they were moving, but they have been taking care to hide their presences, even from myself."
“Aye, I could not feel their presence either, they have been very good at hiding it.” He asserts. T’kharr sits and listens.
Mrishnavurti nods, "I suspected they would be. There are other powers who would come to strike them were they to move openly." She looks through the crystal ball. "A raging storm, a man who holds his commitments close and his rulership closer, emissaries from the other side, there is a balance, and where one acts, another reacts."
Balan looks at Silgara and T’kharr, thinking a moment. “Do you believe we should ask about the notes we had found?” He asks.
"Circumspectly, perhaps?" T’kharr answers. Silgara shrugs but doesn't seem very inclined to trust Mrishnavurti.
"That said, this does seem...not a very good context to raise them in." T’kharr surmises.
“Aye.” Balan says. He looks back to Mrishnavurti. “We will be on the island for a bit more time one of our group wishes to check amongst the other villages. Though after I am unsure on where our journey should turn to directly. I remember your statement on there are other Khans. Am I right to believe they will be more on guard than the one we faced.”
She looks over to Balan "Not other Khans, no, but the Khan was one of the faces that you fought against, and if my telling of the threads of fate are correct, they have been cut from fate's tapestry. You've crippled one source of evil plaguing these lands." She looks over. "But there are two others. One hides among men. One is a source of depravity and chaos. Likely the Corsairs you know."
T’kharr both says and asks at the same time, “Describe the other?”
The Seer looks over, waving her hands, peering into the crystal ball intently... "I've made mention of it before, but there is one evil that both uses and abuses order. Hiding among men. Corrupting and rotting what they touch. The other..."
"Aye, that one evil is consistent with some of what we have been made aware of from our findings." T’kharr interrupts.
The Seer keeps working her crystal ball. "I see men of greed and violence, desiring power and plunder, yet every ship has a captain... and yet even a black code does not contain their darkness. There is devotion and there is greed for power, where devotion becomes an excuse. But to others around them, the result is often one and the same."
“Aye.” T’kharr agrees.
Balan speaks up, “The leader of the corsairs, they may be a challenge to find unless they stay in one spot for some time.”
The seer nods. "I have not been able to find them in my visions. I suspect that whatever power it is that they serve, it protects them from being found so easily."
“Aye, I feel it will be difficult less we start randomly taking down their ships to draw attention.
Or that may just be it since we have taken one out. They may take that as a thorn in their side they would need to deal with.” Balan speaks while thinking on the situation as a whole. He adds asking, “Have you heard of one breaking their nature when from another plane?”
She looks over, puzzled, then shakes her head "Alas, I have not. I have found that many such men when they embrace such darkness, do not return from it easy. But for beings of the planes, for them to break such, such is a near impossibility. Such an event would likely send ripples through the fates..." She considers. "If possible, such would likely be a break from the fates... and the implications of that... it would likely mean that any peering into the threads of fate from there on would be broken." She shakes her head. "I have never divined such a thing. I would not think it possible. Not by mortal hands, and... not without something extreme that could rend the threads of fate from their paths with disturbing power."
“Aye, and if there was a possibility that some being was attempting this would it draw the attention of those fates that exist?” Balan asks.
T’kharr throws up her hand. "Perhaps we should shift from this to...discussing the other figure that seems to have appeared in the divinations?"
Balan looks over to her. “Apologies.”
Mrishnavurti looks over. "Even if I cannot see them, I can see their influence, like the casting of a shadow upon the strands of fate. Such as a man who holds an iron grip over others, and the more they try to escape, the more the man tries to tighten their grip, only to have more slip from their grasp. Dare I say, I saw one of such threads avert, but others nearby have very much risen and grabbed fire in their hands and hearts. They are not your adversaries, not unless you wish to make them so. Nor are they maligning. But you can expect those that are to work their weavings into their hearts."
T'kharr steeples her fingers, looking thoughtfully over at Balan. The seer quiets down, waiting for them. The dragonborn nods his head, “I understand. We shall move forward with the search but be more wary of the potential outcome they may pose onto us.”
"Aye. I reckon that your interpretation of it is largely the same as mine, even?" T’kharr mutters.
Balan sighs and looks to the side of the room. “Though I am compelled by duty to serve what my title entails the wariness this causes in my soul brings me to take more time. If we approach this without being careful or perhaps avoid it for some time less, it will grow to be a problem needing immediate facing.”
The seer nods to Balan. "Of course. You will do as your duty demands. Though some problems may not be so simply as striking down villains to solve."
Balan looks back to her. “Aye, I would agree with that fully. Would there be anything you impart on us before we take leave?”
"Only what I have already, unless you have further questions for me?" the seer looks back.
“I believe at this moment I myself do not have any questions at least that I can think of in this exact moment though I always know where you are if I think of some.” Balan lightly laughs.
She nods, “Of course.”
Balan looks to his companions. “If no further questions at this time perhaps we continue to our next location.”
Then Mrishnavurti looks to Silgara "If you are wondering, yes, I have foreseen you will come across the one who sings of night while singing a veneer of moon. But it won't be for a while. You have time to help here before that occurs."
"I don't." Silgara says brusquely.
"Now that...is a curious vision to have." T’kharr observes.
Silgara shakes her head. "Don't worry about it." Her tone is sharper and more on edge than usual.
Mrishnavurti looks over. "Perhaps not now, but it is something they may need to worry about later. Depending on how paths merge or diverge."
Balan looks slightly curious to Silgara but shrugs and stands. “It is your story to tell when you are ready.”
T’kharr stands as well and nods to the seer. Balan turns to the woman behind the crystal ball. “We appreciate your time.
Mrishnavurti dips her head. "May the tapestry of fate be as kind to you as it can."
Silgara gives a nod to Balan but seems ready to leave in a hurry. The group moves on. As they step off the ship Balan pulls at his hip armor. “Right then to our next visit?”
T’kharr smirks, “Aye. Which boat next? Azure Winds, or Diamond Industries?" Silgara shrugs, though she has a look that suggests she wants a strong and stiff drink. She seems pretty agitated by what Mrishnavurti told her
“Perhaps we move down the docks in order of their location to make it quicker for us.” Balan suggests.
"That might be the simplest yes, unless you think we should break off here and head to the inn. Silgara?" T’kharr looks at her.
Silgara breathes out, "I'm fine." She's clearly not. "Regardless, we can check with one of the others and find more leads. More productive than drinking."
“Aye.” Balan says while looking slightly annoyed. After all, investigations is thirsty work.
T’kharr looks over to both the other ships. "I think we can head to the Azure Winds next?"
Silgara nods.

Re: She Came from the Sea
The walk to the Azure sails is uneventful. They are welcomed aboard the ship again and provided escort. Once again, they find themselves in a meeting room inside. Khalid comes over to greet them. T’kharr bows. “Hello there Khalid. It is good to see you again; I trust things have gone...more smoothly than they were prior at least?"'
"Salam Alaikum, friends. Quite the spectacle you came across there in the market square." He nods "Things have been going about as expected here. To Clarify, business has still been difficult, and Hattori isn't making things easier for us. We're doing what we can for Golamaru though, per your companion's request."
"Ah, that is a small relief at least. We have returned recently from a sojourn of our own that removed a pawn from the board, so to speak, but left us...a fair bit disturbed all the same." T’kharr confesses.
"Ah? What did you find, then? I know your companion mentioned a Youkai in our midst, but I take it there is more." Kahlid asks.
"Aye, a power that is trying to disturb the very balance of the far planes themselves." T’kharr comments. He quiets down, letting her speak. "Some sort of jackal-headed figure, clearly no stranger to magic and planar study, trying to bend planar creatures until they broke their bonds of...behavioral expectation. There is also evidence of another force...one that tempts with dark wishes."
Khalid listens, he speaks to one of the guards in midani, probably asking to fetch Moalim, who shows up shortly afterwards. But he beckons T'kharr continue as well. "I see... were they the ones behind this... Horseman cult?" Khalid inquires, in the lull of silence.
T’kharr says, "I think it's connected, at least, but it might be easier if one of my companions speaks in more detail." She motions to Balan or Silgara for them to add more at this point.
Silgara looks over, but she seems reluctant to volunteer. She's pretty clearly unsure of how much she wants to tell them. Balan is the one who speaks first, “Aye possible. Without questioning though...shrugs.”
Khalid seems to pick up on the nervousness. He looks over at Balan, raising an eyebrow . Moalim tries to break it up with a smile. "Is it truly so outlandish, or hard to believe? It's also notable when you sail into town on a new boat. Don't worry if it sounds crazy. I've heard some outlandish tales in my time."
T’kharr decides to speak then as her companions are not helping. “Ah, yes. The Khan was indeed behind the horsemen. The corsairs do remain as a threat though, and we have reasons to suspect there are... dark powers out trying to draw people into their webs of lies, with temptation and subtlety.”
Khalid raises an eyebrow "The Khan?"
Moalim nods, "That makes sense. We do know that the Corsairs have practitioners of dark magic in unusual numbers."
T’kharr clears things up, “The Khan: Some leader of horsemen, who was in cahoots with the corsairs. We felled him off the nightmare he rode."
Khalid nods, "I see, sounds like a solid victory, but from what it sounds like, it is far from over."
"Indeed, quite far." T’kharr intones. “Have you had any further issues with...troublemakers from within, since we last spoke?"
He shakes his head. "Thankfully, no. It would seem that Gobu and his collaborator were all in whatever scheme they were involved in. Not that there haven't been other problems, of course."
"Aye, have there been any...changes in corsair activity you've noticed, for that matter?" T’kharr asks.
He shakes his head no, "Not that I've been able to determine, at least. If anything is strange, well, some things in Golamaru were a touch odd." He cranes his head.
“Oh?” T’kharr concentrates on his answer.
He nods, "Some of the villagers had a rather... curious request. They wished for transportation to another village and island to the east of here. Some of my men also mentioned someone who was a man of another village there, one who avoided my people at least. But he was speaking with the locals in private."
T’kharr takes it in then asks, "Do you know which village that man was from?"
He shakes his head "I am afraid I do not. Possibly one of another island, if I had to guess." Khalid then cranes his head "You seem reluctant to speak on what happened during your venture in detail..."
She considers him then says, “It was...some quite disturbing findings. We ventured to a place that was told to us as the destination of a vessel that was ambushed by the corsairs, only to find an island cloaked in shadow. There, we found a hidden seaport, a fortress occupied by the Khan's men, and what appeared to be the study-lair of the aforementioned jackal-headed mage." He nods, listening, letting T'kharr go at her own pace. "In the lair, we had to outwit and defeat several demons and devils, set up for us by way of traps. And it is there we found notes of the jackal-mage's work on bending planar powers against their will. Notes on the fall of angelic figures and so on, various experiments in trying to get demons and devils to cooperate... Were he to be successful, the results would be cataclysmic, and likely provoke a backlash on the scale of the Folly of Karsus itself"
Moalim considers, eyes widening, then considers "The Tanar’ri and Baatezu hate one another greatly. Ever warring among themselves. It goes beyond their nature."
T’kharr nods, “Quite so. One of the traps sprang six demons and six devils on us, only way we survived was by letting them fight each other and mopping up what was left."
Khalid considers "What would such a mage's experiments have to do with corsairs, a Khan, and a Horseman cult, though? Part of that experiment?"
Moalim smiles "Cleverly done."
"I have a suspicion that the jackal-headed mage may be a kind of fiend that is neither tanar’ri nor Baatezu...wu-jen, yes, but not the Hengeyokai that they have initially been pegged as." T’kharr theorizes.
Moalim considers "One of the Yulgoloth, a great one at that.... " He spends some time thinking "I believe there is one who might... fit? An Arcanaloth? One of the greatest of the Yulgoloth. From what I know of them, they profiteer from the warring between the Tanar’ri and Baatezu, seeking to use each for their own end. The lesser Yulgoloth serve as mercenaries in their warring."
Silgara's eyes perk up, then she nods ... "That does sound accurate."
Moalim nods, "Troubling news then, if we are up against such a fiend."
"Aye, quite so." T’kharr intones.
Khalid nods, "I see, I can understand why you were hesitant. Few would believe such a tale." He pauses.
Moalim looks over "Was there anything else of note? I cannot claim to know the mind of such a dark being, but perhaps other clues might give some warning of what its plans truly are."
T’kharr gives them more. “The notes revealed two Youkai, one that tempts by granting wishes and one that corrupts souls. One of them is pulling strings in the market square, the other occupies an...unknown position."
The two men blink and look at each other. Khalid rubs his face. “Are you telling me there is some truth to Hattori’s ravings?”
T’kharr clarifies for them. “The tempter is said to be an...atypical sort of Glabrezu, the soul-harvester is a Falxugon. Aye, something trying to corrupt the fair workings of the normal market to evil ends."
Moalim rubs his chin, considering... "Not all fiends are mindless brutes. Some are, indeed, expert manipulators."
Khalid considers, seeming quite troubled by that. A breath out, "I thought that Hattori's accusations were just hot air. But what you say is indeed troubling."
Moalim shakes his head. "It may not be one conspiracy but several tripping upon each other. But I wouldn't presume to know what is going on. But..." He looks aside to Khalid.
"As honorable men, we should do whatever we can to help with this. Already we did notice devil-corruption reaching out to one of our employees, after all." Khalid considers. "But if you wish to ask anything, we'll try and do what we can to assist."
T’kharr nods, “That I will keep in mind, for sure." she looks to Balan and Silgara to see if they have questions or anything to add.” Silgara doesn't seem to have anything to add for the moment.
"Thank you for your time, unless you have anything more to share?" T'kharr rises.
Khalid looks over. "There is, actually. From what my employees have told me, well, you saw that spectacle in the market square. It is my understanding that the unrest on other islands nearby is also reaching a critical state. Some might even be in active rebellion by now. I am uncertain for sure, but... suffice it to say, there is tension in the winds."
T’kharr sighs, “That is good to know."
"I haven't tried expanding northwards to a great degree, though. That's closer to where the Daimyo sits, and he is not fond of foreigners, much like the Tax Collector." Khalid mentions. "I am afraid that is all I have for now, unfortunately information does not pass quickly through the islands because of the constant disruptions by the Corsairs."
"Fair and may the Broken God ease your pains" T’kharr dips her head in farewell to Khalid and Moalim.
"Ma'as Salama" Khalid and Moalim bid their farewells.
T'kharr turns to her group, "I think we head to Diamond Industries next, if that's good with you two?"
"Ah, I did forget something." Khalid admits, "I had attempted to extend my trade to an island to the west, but I have not heard from them in some time. I have some suspicions that something terrible is happening there. If you have time and can see what is going on, I would be most grateful." Khalid says, before they depart.
T'kharr gives him a nod of acknowledgement at the quest he gave "Understood, we'll see what we can do" then starts walking and talking "Ready to head to Diamond Industries?" to Silgara.
Silgara nods "Ready." She looks over. "Do you think we should be more cautious revealing what we know to them?"
"I reckon so." The Gnoll replies. Silgara nods.
Balan gets an unusually serious expression on his face. "Aye"

Re: She Came from the Sea
Meanwhile. Mingzhu, Fwangzhu and Zsikhou are drinking at the inn until night fall. The inn seems... well, the mood is tense, people are drinking. It's quieter than normal... Fwangzhu is lively and actually good company. He likes to boast about past fights. Zsikhou is far more reserved... Fwangzhu lets out a satisfied 'ahh' after drinking down a frothy mug. "Barkeep sure makes a nice Sake here, heh." Mingzhu nods while sipping her beer so not to get drunk. Zsikhou sips his tea.
Fwangzhu seems... quite morose when the topic of Golamaru comes up. Beneath the boisterous exterior, his killing the elder of the place, someone he considered a friend, seems to have left him with quite a psychological scar. Mingzhu notices and steps in. “People change Fwangzhu especially when they face tests of faith and honor." some stand to it. Some crumble to the easy way out.”
Fwangzhu huffs, it's pretty clearly a raw topic. There's an instinctive snarl from the badger; he takes a long drink. "Fucker led his people and protected them well for years. The fuck can he be expected to do when placed in an impossible situation like he was?" He huffs, "Can't blame the old man for breaking how he did."
Zsikhou sips his tea noncommittally and looks over. "He could have refrained from stooping to siding with an Oni and a Youkai cultist group."
Fwangzhu huffs in response. "And got himself and his people wiped out in doing so. If you lot hadn't shown up at the last minute that's exactly what would've happened." He snarls back at Zsikhou, who looks nonplused. "Don't look at me like that. I killed him for stooping to that. Doesn't mean I have to like it." Fwangzhu takes a long drink. Another one. Then orders a refill of something stiff. The Badger seems rather morose now.
Mingzhu stares at her beer while she talks, “I do not think us showing up did anything...........No I believe the elder had already made his decision."
Fwangzhu growls "If help had arrived sooner, then the Elder wouldn't have had been in that position." He huffs, "Fuck if we'd have hit the camp when you lot first showed up then we might have won the fight then and there and he'd still be alive."
Still in her thoughts, Mingzhu says, “Though I do leave much of the blame on myself. " She purses her lips. "If I had known what he was planning I would have concentrated on him more than You and Minamoto fighting. Perhaps I could have turned his thoughts back to the better. but I did not."
Fwangzhu snorts "He wasn't planning to sell out when you first showed up."
She sighs, “You cannot know that Fwangzhu.”
"But I think..." Fwangzhu huffs "After you lot left, and the goblins had those blast globe things, I think that's when he lost hope." He snorts, "I knew him for years, Shamaness."
“The past is the past Fwangzhu. The only thing we can do is meditate on it so that we do not make the same mistakes in the future." Mingzhu sighs. Fwangzhu huffs, taking another drink. The air seems more morose now, Fwangzhu doesn't seem to feel like talking much anymore. Zsikhou looks over but quietly sips his tea.
Zsikhou then looks to Mingzhu. Fwangzhu, despite taking some heavy drinks, doesn't look drunk. Zsikhou speaks though. "Is it time for... what you were planning to do?"
She looks out the door and nods. “It's dusk. It is time. You may see ghosts. Fear not, they will be the ghosts of Elders past. Are we ready gentlemen?"
Zsikhou nods and stands up, Fwangzhu steps forward, more reluctantly. He's clearly in somewhat sour mood but follows along. They head for the graveyard. It's a relatively small place; odds are most do some form of sea burial around here.
Mingzhu waits until it’s fully dark then casts trance and commune with lesser spirit right after. “Spirits of past elders come to me. I have need of your wisdom.” She does find a spirit. This time it's a community spirit. “I have three questions, Spirit.”
It awaits her questions. Mingzhu goes on, “The first is: Are there good candidates to replace the elders of Sudzuki and Golanmaru? Ones that are strong but gentle. Ones that would steel themselves against corruption so as not to be influenced by it?”
The spirit seems to consider for some time the fact that it doesn't immediately give an answer suggests that it's not a simple question to answer. Finally, it replies. “Not yet.”
The answer trips up Mingzhu. Of all the souls on the island there is not one yet ready to become an elder. She is aghast for a moment on what to ask next not expecting such and almost depended upon another for her next questions. She meditates for a moment. With no names to ask she must use her next questions carefully. She recovers after a few moments and comes up with her next question. “Spirit, what would be the first best step to getting Sudzuki back on its feet, so the people need not move from their homes?”
The spirit again takes some time to consider, it's not an immediate thing, it suggests that there really isn't a clear and easy answer here. "Time. Reprieve." The spirit's 'body language' seems to suggest that it's likely going to be mostly up to them, once they're free of outside pressures.
Mingzhu nods and considers. She wonders if she can understand these instructions enough to help the city. She then asks her final question. "Spirit, Fwangzhu has become Golamaru's protector. How best can I aid him or is there someone that may aid him in its defense?"
Fwangzhu shuffles a bit, the spirit looks over, considering. This time the spirit speaks in more depth, and more quickly. "The rift that has opened between him and the village can't be so easily healed. If you wish him to help, take him with you to fight that which assails the villages."
Mingzhu bobs her head slowly. “Thank you for your guidance spirit of Elders.” The spirit bows and fades. Zsikhou and Fwangzhu look over to her. She looks up at the two of her companions. "The spirit threw me a loop there is no one on the island that would fit as elder for either city. There will be in the future but not now............. We will have to defeat the goblins and orcs in Golamaru. it will greatly help Fwangzhu in his mission as protector of the town."
Zsikhou nods, "I expect that correcting such issues won't be so simple. So far of what I have seen, the internal problems in the human settlements here are vast."
Fwangzhu huffs "Well, without the Oni, the orcs and goblins usually go back to beating each other up."
Mingzhu shakes her head, “I think I know what to do in Sudzuki to help it though It will take the villagers agreeing.”
Zsikhou looks up "And that is?"
“Hold a meeting and tell them that time and patience is what they need to heal and rebuild. They must learn to again work for themselves. Fwangzhu if you come back defeating the goblins and orcs it will heal wounds that were left between you and its people.”
Fwangzhu nods, then a huff "Yeah, I can keep em safe from that for now. Still, given what we saw on that island, seems there's a lot more that needs an axe in their skulls than just them."
Mingzhu concentrates, seeking wisdom within herself. “The community is more important for us at the moment, and the wound placed between you and the people. Let us fix that Fwangzhu. Let us show them that you are a hero too that can be depended on. If we do this it will lay down once again a new foundation of trust.”
Zsikhou however seems unsure, "To me it would seem like dealing with the Corsairs and whichever other parts of that conspiracy is more important. They will continue to undermine the Mandate of Heaven while they are around."
“Sometimes the smaller things count more than the big things Zsikhou. Besides that, going to the villages and dealing with problems we may pick up new information on the pirates.” Mingzhu insists.
Fwangzhu huffs, looking up. "It's pretty late though, think it might be time to turn in for tonight."
Zsikhou nods "Very well then. As you were."
Mingzhu nods, “Let us return.” They go back to the inn. At this point, the night seems to be quieting down. There are still people drinking their brains out but it's quieting down some. They order dinner and tea and wait for the others. While they wait, a Durpari man moves over to greet Fwangzhu, he looks over. Even buys him a drink. Something Fwangzhu seems to like.

Re: She Came from the Sea
T’kharr, Balan and Silgara head off to the Diamond Industries ship. The party isn't let on the boat, but eventually Samael does go out to meet them. "Ah, Salutations. Quite a way you cleaned up a standoff in the afternoon today." He gives a courteous smile "So, to what do I owe the pleasure?"
Balan gives him a polite nod, “Aye it was a mild showing wasn't it.”
The trade merchant chuckles, "Oh, Hattori /really/ needs to get some new material. But alas, it does show how things have been boiling under the surface between him and his people. Quite the messy affair, really." He's quick to switch posture. "But lady Mingzhu did mention something that stirred his accusations further. I wonder, was that just to calm the man down to get him to stop making a fool of himself again? Or was there something to it?"
T'kharr looks between the dragonborn and merchant deciding to let Balan talk a bit after nodding Samael a greeting. Balan answers him, “There is a problem amongst those here but what specifically is it you speak of?”
"Well now, specifically when she claimed there were Youkai among us." He gives a dramatic shrug "Of course, there's many ways to interpret such a phrase. Literal?" Another dramatic hand gesture. "Figurative? Why, many of the locals already see the Daimyo and his men as such. The Daimyo and his men view those resenting his rule and rebels as such." He relaxes his pose "Or perhaps a way to calm a man all too prone to hysteria and wild accusations." Samael gives a wide smile.
Balan shakes his head. His face a serious expression. “Aye, it would seem not a false statement from the information we procured.”
He seems genuinely shocked "I see." He considers. "Usually when people shout demons, it is simply hysteria, panic, dramatics taking root where people stop being rational. But if it is true, then it is a serious problem." He considers. "I suppose you are here asking for information, or advice, perhaps? I know adventurers like rumors, but I know I've already said I prefer more reliable things."
Balan chooses his words carefully, “We would like to know any information you could give us or any thoughts on this measure if able. Perhaps even if you have noticed something odd even amongst your own men.”
"Aside from some of my employees being lazy, wenching too much, gambling with money they don't have, or other vices?" He chuckles "Ah, I do try to encourage professionalism among my employees. But I know some simply can't help themselves. Still, as long as they keep it... /tolerable/ and don't cause problems with their behavior, I usually don't see overmuch reason to pry overly into their private entertainments." he smirks. "But I do think I might be able to point you in the right direction. Assuming of course, you have the ability to prove such claims. Though I expect it will still be a challenge." He makes another dramatic hand gesture "And likely not one easy to solve with swordplay.
"See, Hattori, for all his authority, he doesn't actually have nearly as much as he thinks he does. Oh, he likes to showboat and throw his weight around, but on the Daimyo's totem pole, he's lower in the ranks than he likes to admit." A smirk "But there is someone I know. A Magistrate on an island to the North. He goes by Magistrate Josou. But!" A dramatic hand up, as if to make a point "If you think dear Hattori is difficult, Josou is very much even more so. Very much against foreigners, harsh in his judgements. But he does take his duties seriously. But expect him to question /everything/ you bring him." He smiles again.
T'kharr pipes in, "Would you happen to have appeared before him before?"
"Oh," He smiles "I have met him before. Trade law and disputes, it happens. I found him to be a most surly and disagreeable fellow. But he did ultimately agree that contracts must be honored. But it was the kind of dispute where it was clear he was looking for any excuse to side against the foreigner." A pause. "I wouldn't say we are the type to break bread and wine together." Samael replies.
Silgara takes some notes.
T’kharr considers, “What...expectations does he have of those that appear before him? He doesn't sound like a very...'come as you are' sort."
Balan gives her a nod in agreement.
Samael gives his advice, “Ah..." He takes a step back "He's one with high expectations, a serious man, and doesn't like having his time wasted. You will likely need to receive a summons or go through his secretaries first. It'll be even harder to get to him as a foreigner. He will expect to be treated with courtesy and decorum but also shows plenty of barbs towards foreigners."
"It sounds like that our best bet might be working through a local official then." T’kharr declares.
"It depends on what you need." The merchant retorts with a smile.
"Mostly an audience, to explain the situation to him more...directly than secondhand word through Hattori or the mayor, given the gravity of it all." T’kharr explains.
"Well..." He waves a hand. "Most of these local officials, while they have authority and pull locally, they wouldn't have the ability to cleanly get support from higher up." A wave "While Magistrate Josou does." A shrug "Still, it really depends on what you need and expect."
"That said, I was wondering if there was more than just...general guidance you could give about appearing before him." T’kharr says rather shortly.
Samael considers. "Hm... well, by all means, dress well, show decorum. He prefers to speak in High Shou rather than Low Shou. Try to make a good first impression. He would rather deal with someone who gives the appearance of importance and pull rather than a commoner."
T’kharr smiles, “Aye, I certainly don't plan on showing up before his court in this," motioning to her sackcloth robe.
Samael gives off a hearty chuckle, “Aye, I would think the same.”
"It’s just that I don't know if he'd expect everybody to show up in local fineries, or if he'd rather us not try to dress as a local if we're not such. Some people consider poor attempts at emulating locals more insulting than foreign dress and mannerisms." T’kharr asks.
"Ah..." He nods "An astute point indeed. You are correct, I think in your case, he would prefer you not try to dress as a local, unless you are one. But it would be better to show up in local fineries than no fineries at all."
T’kharr motions to Balan and Silgara. “As to my companions here?”
He smiles to Silgara. "I do actually have some elven fashion available at some of my stalls, if you would care to purchase. Go ahead and see them. Browse to your heart's content. I'm sure you can find something that fits you nicely."
Silgara looks over "Ah, I have heard that some of those are... valuable to humans as collector's items. I'll take a look if I have time."
Samael does a theatric half-bow. "At your leisure, milady." He gives a smile, then a look to Balan "As for you, big fellow, I'm sure you can find some finery that suits you. Something Cormyrian might fit well."
Balan smiles, “Perhaps. I will give it thought.”
Samael looks up "Well, as you like." He smiles "Was there anything else I could assist you fine ladies and gentlemen with?"
T’kharr thinks a moment then says, "Well, since we're talking fineries, I suppose I should ask about something for myself, not that those of the Lord on the Rack, and especially our devout, are known for extravagant raiment by any means."
Samael gestures. "Ah, yes, I know. They much prefer humble bearings. Still, there's a time and place for such things. Oh, I suppose you would give our tailoring staff quite a challenge. Still, I'm sure they can figure something out." He smiles as the coin in his mind’s eye grows.
"It's worth a shot I reckon, at least." T’kharr glances from Balan to Silgara "Did either of you wish to raise anything else?"
Silgara doesn't seem to have anything to add. “It's getting pretty late.”
T’kharr glances back at Balan to make sure he doesn't have anything else before they depart. Samael gives a theatrical farewell gesture "Have a good evening."
Balan suggests, “I believe we may have what we need.”
Silgara rubs her eyes "Back to the Dizzy Panda? It's pretty late now."
Balan laughs, “Aye we need to get you that drink.”
She chuckles, "No kidding." She then sighs, "Though going to the others for fashion is an option to. I suppose it depends on your personal tastes." She looks over to T'kharr. "You know, maybe one of those Zakharan robes might look nice on you."
"That might be an option if Samael doesn't have anything, I'll keep it in mind, and yes, let’s not delay getting you that drink just for fashion." Then T’kharr bows Samael farewell. "May the Lord on the Rack ease your pains"
With that the three head back to the Dizzy Panda.
Balan gives him a polite nod, “Aye it was a mild showing wasn't it.”
The trade merchant chuckles, "Oh, Hattori /really/ needs to get some new material. But alas, it does show how things have been boiling under the surface between him and his people. Re: She Came from the Sea
When they return to the Dizzy Panda, Mingzhu, Fwangzhu, and Zsikhou are all there. There's a Durpari man with Fwangzhu, he waves Balan over. And when he sees T'kharr, waves over to her too.
T’kharr plops down in a chair, “Ah, we have returned, with some useful leads, and also some ideas of where we need to head," as she joins the party with a dip of her head. Balan looks curiously over to them but bolsters himself proud and walks over.
Mingzhu nods. “We have more knowledge on how to proceed with the villages.”
"Greetings," The man says to Balan and Fwangzhu "I was asked to deliver a message to you from a mutual friend. That if you wanted to follow the threads to uncover treachery, that there is an island to the East you should investigate. Following the trail of a small conspiracy can lead to revelations of a larger one." He says, quaffing a drink. It also seems like he paid for a free drink for Balan and T'kharr
Fwangzhu's ears shoot up as the Durpari man says that.
T'kharr shakes her head at the offer of a drink. "Thank you, but I'll just take a tea. And noted on the island as well. Seems there is plenty of work to do."
Balan hands the drink in front of him to Silgara. “Apologies, I don't drink since the accident with the corsairs. But we shall keep that in mind all the same and we appreciate you coming.”
It seems like he already ordered a tea for T'kharr. He nods to Balan, "I was also told to say that if you heard north, you might run risk of falling off of a knife's edge you've balanced so far."
The dragonborn stares at him moment curiously. “How far north...”
T'kharr takes the tea and sniffs at it a bit before sipping it. "I think it's a metaphor, but we'll talk about that later, I reckon."
"Ah, I don't know for sure, my apologies." He nods, “Regardless, I had best be off." He says a farewell in Midani, finishes his drink, drops the cup off, then heads off.
Mingzhu tells them, "Fwangzhu has agreed to be Golamaru's protector. and I have some guidance from the spirits on how he can win the people's hearts back." Balan gives a cautious nod to her. Fwangzhu huffs seemingly to have some mixed feelings about it.
Mingzhu frowns, “We have to defeat the goblins and orcs thus secure the people's hearts back into Fwangzhu's favor.”
T’kharr interrupts, “Anyway, it sounds like we have a couple of leads to pursue, it’s just a matter of which to head for first."
Aye Balan replies.
Mingzhu goes on with her thinking, “As for Sudzuki........it will be a bit harder to do. We must herald revival and patience. Tsaboru and Rhakku will be much easier. So how should we proceed next?”
Balan inserts, “We have an island to the east and one to the west to investigate.”
Silgara considers, "Well, we do have a few options, at least."
“Traveling any direction we need to take great care.” Balan assets.
Mingzhu nods to the information, “Also at this point there is no one qualified to be an elder on the island, though the spirits said there will be in the future."
Balan looks at her curious, “Aye, and how would that be so.”
"I do not know Balan I can only get so much from spirits.” Mingzhu replies.
Silgara nods sympathetically, "Solving complex social problems often takes time and care." She sighs.
“In other words, I only have three questions I can ask and the first could throw my thinking off the path as it did now. But I still got valuable information on how to proceed with Fwangzhu getting back into favor for the villagers and what to do about Sudzuki.” Mingzhu insists and nods to Silgara.
"And finding those fit for leadership positions... often it's not something that comes easily. It might take time and training to get someone suitable." Silgara considers... "How long does it usually take to find a successor?"
Zsikhou looks over to T'kharr and Balan "What did you find in your investigations?"
Mingzhu huffs while digesting the task. “Usually there is some form of apprentice. One that is groomed by the experienced people for the position. It takes a sense of understanding and the ability to get people to work together. If there is none like we have now. I do not know, Silgara. Sometimes two seasons, sometimes a year. but things tend to slowly go awry as the position remains open. Slowly at first then accelerates."
Balan turns to Zsikhou, “It would seem one of the two is leading the corsairs. The other is in an unknown place keeping themselves very hidden and quiet...Though the man from the diamond gave me an off feeling.” He looks over to Silgara and T'kharr.
Fwangzhu huffs, "The elder of Golamaru had one he was grooming, one of the militia."
Mingzhu asks, “Is he still alive Fwangzhu?”
Fwangzhu shakes his head "I didn't see him at the battle, my guess is he was at the Orc Camp, but.... he went with the Elder. If he returns, he'll be hung for treason." Mingzhu nods.
Silgara looks at the others "Well, each of the trading companies pointed us to an adjacent island that may be having problems. One to the west, one to the north, one to the east." She sighs "So, what is our next step? That or... do something else."
"The community spirit would not lie to me. We are allies and I am the vessel to bring their wisdom to the elders and people as an advisor and envoy for the spirits of community. the voices of elders past." Mingzhu explains.
Zsikhou nods "So, what do you plan to do next then?"
Balan considers everything, “Aye and if the word of note is to be advised we should not go north.”
Mingzhu thinks then asks, “What village is to the north again?”
Silgara looks over "Ah... there is one of the Daimyo's magistrates who resides on an island to the North." Fwangzhu snarls at that.
Mingzhu looks at him, “Fwangzhu as protector of a village you will need to learn to deal with officials.... I can advise you if you like on this.”
Fwangzhu snarls "I know how to deal with that scum sucker. I shove him through a table then smash his head with a chair. Then he shuts the fuck up, and people are happy. Especially if it's the bastard I'm thinking of."
She just sighs and covers her eyes with her hands shaking her head.
Fwangzhu snorts, "Yeah, fair enough. Don't break a table for that bastard. Giving him a good mauling is good enough." A huff.
Silgara looks over. "Still, we will need to decide our next steps."
"The villagers may be able to give us more information." Mingzhu stipulates.
Balan thinks a moment. “Perhaps the one that had delivered the message was not working for who we thought.”
Silgara rubs her neck. “Unfortunately, our knowledge on this is not great, but we have a map and ship, so should be able to go to adjacent isles if we need to." She looks over to Balan. "I'm sure we could double check if needed."
Mingzhu considers, “As one of the Yokai are running a trading company if it’s one of the three they will try to mislead us in any way they can. We have already disrupted their operations in some way. They will try to get rid of us eventually."
Silgara nods, considering "Keep in mind the types we are up against likely hate each other too, they may try to direct us against each other. That is something that often happens in squabbles between fiends."
She sighs "Regardless, we need to be careful." She sips some tea.
Zsikhou looks over "I suppose we can stick around to try to smoothen over any internal problems here. If you think that is our best course of action. But this is only one island of many."
Balan thinking back on the man says, “Aye, if it is not who they say they are we could approach her again to see.” He sits this whole time carefully working on a pearl trying to make one specifically in Fwangzhu's nature. Zsikhou nods, perhaps wondering if any head pats are coming. considering his next moves.
Mingzhu nods, “Then it’s to the villages the next few days.”
Balan looks up from his pearl and tools, “Aye.”
"I think we can stick around for a bit here, then we can work the leads east and west. That'll give us more information for when the time comes." T’kharr agrees.
Mingzhu looks at Zsikhou, “I have protection from evil among the spells that I use now. be aware. I will only use it if I feel I need to.” Zsikhou looks over to her, raising an eye ridge.
Silgara looks over, nodding "Still, I worry that the problems with the varying fiends will only escalate if we do not alert the locals of such dangers... though such a move may play into their plans." She sighs, rubbing her face.
Mingzhu turns to Silgara. “What is your best advice, Silgara.”
"That spell shouldn't be problematic, should it?" Zsikhou asks with those beady eyes blinking innocently.
“I worry it may hurt you.” Mingzhu comments back to him.
Zsikhou looks on quizzically "Why would it?"
Silgara drinks her tea, considering "I do admit, I don't know how much help we can be by sticking around, rather than moving on. Still, if you feel you can help, go ahead. You have a better feeling for the local culture than myself. And you have your spiritual duties."
Mingzhu nods, “Thank you.”
Balan works on the pearl a bit more carefully Aye the spell won't hurt that one. He lets out a light chuckle. “One good night of rest and then we find some furnishings for our ship. If we are to travel on it, we should have some comfort.”
Mingzhu says, “We will not need it to go to the villages.”
Silgara nods, "We should be able to pick up basic amenities from the market stalls."
Balan says to Mingzhu, “Aye, but we can have it arranged for our return.”
Mingzhu thinks, “But if we wait, I’ll have a court dress made.”
Fwangzhu huffs "Not the ones on this island at least."
Fwangzhu looks to Mingzhu, considers, then a huff, "There's a local tailor I know if you want to get something like that. Never cared much for fancy wear myself, though. I'd figure your path robes would be good enough."
"We'll want to keep them in mind for later on, when we'll likely have to head to court." T’kharr says.
Balan slips with a tool with the conversation and looks baffled and irritated, throwing the pearl across the room.
Fwangzhu looks over. "You're heading to a court?"
Balan huffs irritated, “Aye.”
Mingzhu doesn’t lose a beat. “Just in case Fwangzhu. Eventually, I will need to go I think, being what we are dealing with.”
Balan pulls out another pearl and starts drawing on it. “It may be needed during this travel at some point to help with our overall travel.”
Mingzhu comments, “Personally I would rather deal with real sharks than the ones awaiting at any Wa court."
The dragonborn shrugs, “I know nothing of the court system here.”
“It can get very dangerous, Balan in every sense; both for bodily health and..... other things about which you need not worry.”
Silgara looks over "It... may be best you explain what you know then, Mingzhu."
“I see.” Balan looks down to the pearl pulling out a smaller tool to get a better detail and hold.
Mingzhu takes a moment in meditation then says, “I have advised you on how to dress. You need always be polite and somewhat subservient to the higher officials, but you can still debate but debate with care. People lose their heads in court if they are not respectful and court officials always seek young women to seduce into being concubines especially exotic or pretty ones.”
"Hm, you think that'll be a concern just for Silgara here, or should I be worried about folk thinking me in such a way as well?"
"Hm, you think that'll be a concern just for Silgara here, or should I be worried about folk thinking me in such a way as well?" T’kharr almost Jests.
Balan looks up, “Though we are servants of our gods directly they require us to do this?”
glances to Zsikhou
“I am truly not sure T'kharr if they think you are hengeyokai then yes you will be in danger too.” Mingzhu shrugs.
T’kharr’s eyes go wide, “Noted!”
Zsikhou narrows his eyes, "That sounds like they abuse their power and need to be punished for it."
Silgara rubs her face. "I never thought I would agree with the kobold, but here I do. It makes me want to prepare a suggestion spell on him in case he tries that and tell him to go fornicate with a rusty spike."
“They trap you Balan. If they want you, they will formulate ways for you to hang yourself in your speech and take you as recompense. And they are very honed at doing this, sometimes it will depend upon the rules of court. You cannot misstep.”
Balan scratches a horn, “Perhaps a spell of truth...I feel as if I am not far off ability to do so....It although may ruin that chamber if those spoke what the truth was.”
Fwangzhu snorts, "Your bigger risk is the guy just having Silgara executed. She's an unsanctioned witch. He'll probably demand concessions to have her continued living excused."
Mingzhu nods to him, “This is true.”
Then he looks over at Silgara. "Hey, if you want a spare knife to cut his balls off with if he tries to extort you in that way, I can get you some." Silgara visibly gags and snorts out the tea she was drinking.
T’kharr laughs, “I reckon she's got enough magic that she can give anyone who tries that the ol' spit-roast."
“Aye... Though she could swear her magic to the aid of Bahamut and would fall under paladin law as an apostate in her use of it as a holy warrior.” Balan suggests.
Mingzhu considers, “Silgara has helped many on this island. The court will have spies in every village if they are competent. They will know who we are and what we have done thus far in these lands”.
Fwangzhu snorts, "You expect the Daimyo's losers to give a fuck?"
“Hattori most likely being one of the biggest spies for the courts. I do Fwangzhu because it affects their profits from the people. You must learn to think of the bigger picture.” Mingzhu retorts.
He takes a drink, then snorts again. "Let me tell you, close to the Daimyo's seat of power? They're not gonna give a damn. Unless she's sanctioned and firmly under their thumb? She's getting a noose. You need to figure out how these jackasses operate. Hattori lets her get away with it because he knows he can't do shit. The others aren't gonna give a shit, no matter how many favors she's done them."
Balan looks to Silgara as though it is and offer. Mingzhu says, “It may be that we do not bring Silgara to any court because of the dangers. But we would be at a disadvantage without her brilliant mind."
Zsikhou looks over, he clicks his tongue, expecting snuggles considering. "If she were under my protection, they wouldn't contest me over her. However, it would need to fall within my own divine mission's mandate. I can't just override human law at a whim."
Fwangzhu snorts, looking over. "I expect some still wouldn't give a shit." Mingzhu nods and considers another avenue.
Balan remains addiment he can protect her, “Aye but brandished as a holy warrior she would have some give. Even if it was from a foreign land, they have some status.”
Silgara looks over to Balan. "I... well, " She shakes her head "I doubt they would give much weight to that. Or to the Seldarine. Or to the lady of mysteries."
“And what if the court has a good wu-jen, priest or shaman that can detect lies.” Mingzhu asks.
Fwangzhu huffs, nodding, looking at Balan. "Foreigner gods and their status won't mean shit here."
“Aye it would be only giving aid on such a thing.” Balan insists.
Then Fwangzhu looks to Mingzhu. "The Daimyo keeps those very close. The emperor keeps theirs even closer. They really don't have a lot of magic going for them outside their seats of power."
Balan studies Zsikhou. “Even giving aid, you and yours would hold some weight.”
Zsikhou shrugs, "I fall outside the normal array of human hierarchy. Though if they interfere with mine, I am fully in my rights to have them executed on the spot for it."
“Aiding in your mandate of heavens though not absolute is law in a way here.” Balan says.
Mingzhu holds up her hand. “Thankfully over the next few days we do not have to do this. We can wait and think how to proceed and if we need to make anyone wait on the sidelines until that time.”
Balan reaches his hand towards Zsikhou in a gesture of ‘hold it’ a moment.
Zsikhou looks over. "It is. And while my mandate allows me to override human law where applicable, it has to be precisely because of my duties that I do it." He considers "Having the aid of a foreign unsanctioned mage is an aid to my mission, but..." A pause, sipping tea, needing a hug, considering. "Suffice it to say there can be some nebulous areas, especially if it involves another part of the Celestial Court claiming overreach on my part."
Silgara nods, "Patience can be prudent in this case."
Fwangzhu huffs, shrugging, "Could also be wasting time."
Zsikhou looks up as Balan holds his hand. with those adorable beady puppy-bold eyes
Balan closes his eyes and extends some magic. “Think of your god and a trinket shall appear.
I am letting you use my prayer to get a symbol from them.” Though there is a focus, a small symbol of the eight million is formed...
Zsikhou raises an eye ridge, Silgara also looks at him quizzically. Zsikhou looks over to Balan, then points to his forehead. "This one bears the mark of favor from their patron."
Balan lifts his hand looking at Zsikhou and nods. The kobold says to him, “Those in this land will know what it is. Though... thanks..." He looks to the small wooden symbol of the eight million, holding it, considering, then puts it away. He dips his head to the dragonborn.
Balan bows his head back. In respect of their journey, “Who knows. Perhaps that will help.”
Silgara sighs "So, what's the plan, then? ..."
Fwangzhu huffs, "Think I'm gonna go sleep." He puts the mug he was drinking from down.
“Aye.” Balan says then focuses on a second pearl.
Silgara nods, "Well you've had enough to drink I think, Fwangzhu. Go ahead and rest it off." Fwangzhu snorts in amusement.
T’kharr slides her chair away from the table. “Let’s rest first then decide which of the villages to check on in the morning."
Silgara nods. Mingzhu looks at everyone. “Path of least resistance we do the them in the order of a circle.”
Silgara nods "Sounds like a plan. Or... something. I'm getting some rest" She rubs her neck "Have a good night."
The party members each take their time going up to rest. Fwangzhu is first. Zsikhou slinks off next. Silgara goes last. Balan leans back in his chain carefully working on a tiny pearl.
Silgara looks over at Balan, craning her head "Ah, yes? Can I help you?" She seems to be studying her spells for the evening. Mingzhu goes upstairs. He places a carved pearl on her book.
"Hrm? What's this for?" She looks over. It’s a shifting of elements and waves of past and present with a uncertain but beautiful sunset with a dark moon slightly colored in with a rough black dye made of whatever ink is at hand.
He nods, “A thought of you.”
"Oh, I see..."
“Unpredictable, yet there is a beauty behind the storm.”
She looks it over. "It's a... lovely work of art, thank you." She dips her head.
He gives a bow of his head. “Aye. Perhaps one day you can enchant it with a spell that will make those against you remember fear. Or just keep it as a reminder of you as others would see you.” He laughs a bit hearty.
She spends some time admiring it, a smile. "Maybe... or preferably something more beautiful. Artwork shouldn't be feared."
Balan gives a nod and steps away, “Even the most beautiful things can be dangerous.”
"But some shouldn't have to be..." She nods in turn, then soon goes to a trance.
“Aye.” Balan says as he steps way to their room. “Rest well.”

Re: She Came from the Sea
The party rests at the Dizzy Panda, it's at least a decent night. No more screaming or tension bursts them out of their sleep. Silgara, Zsikhou, and Fwangzhu seemed to have gotten up early to do various things. Mingzhu does her standard routine at dawn. meditating and practicing her kung fu. Silgara at least, is downstairs at the inn, she seems to be going over a map. Whenever the others are ready, Silgara waves them over. When Mingzhu is finished she goes back to the inn. Silgara nods to her, waving her over. Mingzhu moves over to her, curious. “What is it, Silgara?”
"Ah, I've just been scouting routes to various islands from here. We do have a map here..." Mingzhu looks over it questioningly. Silgara continues. "To the west is Zalusu, to the north is Renkao, that's where that magistrate Josou is. To the east is Kizamine." Silgara says, pacing her fingers along the map
She rubs her hair "The Azure winds wanted us to inspect Zalusu, that Seer from the Golden Sails suggested we go to Kizamine." She looks up to Mingzhu "But I take it you still have some duties to handle here?"
“Yes, I should go to the villages one by one and see how they are doing. Try to help them in any way that I can. I have a special mission involving Fwangzhu.”
Silgara looks at the door. "They left sometime early morning, I think to chat with the mayor. I don't know where Zsikhou went." She shakes her head.
Mingzhu traces the map with her finger. “What was said about Renkao?”
"We weren't told much yet, just that it's where Magistrate Josou resides, and we would need to go to him if we wanted to see the Daimyo get more involved in dealing with the threats we've uncovered." Silgara replies. Mingzhu thinks a long time about the wisdom of trying to go to court as of yet. Silgara extrapolates. “At least according to the map though, there's a small port, but the larger settlement is more inland."
“I think we need to avoid Renkao for now. I do not think I am ready to fence with a magistrate’s court let alone the rest of the group. This isn't an easy thing. So, the other two islands? Why do these companies want us to investigate?”
"For the Azure Winds, some tradesmen they sent there went missing, and they heard of trouble. They wanted it investigated. They unfortunately didn't have a lot of information. For the other... she said it would help us unveil the threads of treachery." Silgara says.
As they discuss the islands, Fwangzhu enters the Inn. Silgara shakes her head "I'm not inclined to trust that Seer, but unfortunately we just don't have a lot of information either way. Unfortunately, word travels a lot slower with the longer sailing distances at work here."
Fwangzhu approaches, then looks at Mingzhu "Hey, Shamaness?"
Mingzhu looks up from the map. “Yes, Fwangzhu?”
"Mayor found someone who might make a good candidate for Suduzki's elder. Figured you might want to vet her first, though." The badger huffs
Her brows go up, “The community spirits said there was no one on the island at this time that would be a good elder for either city?"
The hengeyokai huffs, “And that's technically true. She's getting on in years and wasn't particularly interested in taking the position. But she and the mayor discussed it and wants her to train a successor."
Mingzhu turns to Silgara. “Do you wish to come?”
Silgara nods "I might as well, I don't have anything else to do at the moment of note."
The shamaness nods, “Let’s go then.” However, as they're about to leave, they see Zsikhou going to enter the tavern, he looks up to Mingzhu. He seems focused, senses sharp. "Shamaness, greetings."
Mingzhu bows, “Greetings Zsikhou.”
The Kami bows in turn, then looks up to her. "This one tried to get in contact with his patron to update them. This one had some... orders delivered." He huffs, "Apparently there's an escaped criminal here this one is to deal with. Fed her enemies to Youkai a long time ago, then escaped retribution and hid for many years."
Mingzhu raises her eyebrow, “Her enemies?”
"Apparently they were a highly dangerous Ninja that made a bargain with Youkai for power to fight her enemies. Killed many, and never was caught." Zsikhou replies
"Do you have a description of this woman?" Mingzhu asks?
"Likely old, went by Red Sonja back then. Unsure of what their name is now. Will need to further investigate. My master was not sure of their exact location." Zsikhou replies.
Mingzhu grumbles, “I hope this isn’t going where I think it’s going.”
Fwangzhu looks over, raising an eyebrow. "Well, I guess if the Kami needs you, you can visit old Sachiko later. Or do that now. You're a community Shamaness, not a warrior first after all."
“Let us visit old Sachiko first.” Mingzhu states rather resoundingly.
Zsikhou looks over, nodding "You do have your duties to the Celestial Court. This one understands. Will try to pick up Red Sonja's trail and find you again. She's likely to be dangerous." Zsikhou nods, then tries to head off.
Mingzhu stops him. “Oh, you’re coming with me, Zsikhou. Just to make sure of something.”
Fwangzhu shrugs "I know where to find Sachiko, people around sometimes go to ask for advice with stuff, she makes them tea. Anyways, let’s go."
She nods, “Come along, Snout. Zsikhou. We are going to see if this person is ok to be the next elder of Suduzki.”
Zsikhou looks over. "My duty is to find this criminal, am... not well suited for community matters."
Mingzhu looks at him. “I just want to make sure this mysterious old woman that showed up isn’t this Red Sonja.”
Zsikhou looks over, then nods. Fwangzhu scoffs "Old Sachiko? Seriously?" He snorts "She's a little old lady that counsels, comforts people, looks after children, and makes tea. If she were some deadly Ninja, I'd know it."
“Then there is nothing to worry about Fwangzhu.” Mingzhu replies.
"Hah, yeah, let’s go." Fwangzhu nods
Zsikhou looks over "Do you wish this one to be in hiding when you go to visit her?"
Mingzhu carefully weighs the request on what would be best. She decides having the kami out in the open would be more beneficial to her assessment as to the old woman’s reactions to him. "I don’t think that’s necessary Zsikhou." Zsikhou nods. Mingzhu says, “Sometimes being up front about who we are is better.”
Fwangzhu nods, "Well, let’s get going, then." They follow him.

Re: She Came from the Sea
Fwangzhu leads the small group to a home in Port Ginji. It’s rather modest looking like it’s been there a long time. He gives a polite knock. "Just a moment, dearies..." An elderly sounding voice, and the slow movement as she goes to open the door. "Oh my, so many visitors so early. You brought some friends, Fwangzhu. The Shamaness I heard about? Please come in." She doesn't seem to have noticed Zsikhou yet.
Mingzhu bows, steps inside and takes her shoes off. The old woman goes over to a countertop, though speaks as she puts some tea together, "I take it you're here about what the mayor wanted to ask me to do? In truth, I do find it more comfortable here in Port Ginji in my twilight years, I've spent so long here. But I understand the dearies in Suduzki need some direction after what happened." Zsikhou watches her warily, his tail seems to flash with irritation, claws flexing...
"Just water is fine, thank you." Fwangzhu says, while Mingzhu looks around carefully at the inside of the home. It's quite modest. Not overly large. There's a countertop and table with seats that suggests she hosts visitors often, but apart from that, the only rooms of note are a bedroom and small library or study. Nothing extravagant. Silgara makes her way in. She doesn't seem on edge.
Mingzhu wanders into the study and looks at what kind of books she has in the library. She hears the old woman say. “Oh, sorry, I didn’t see you there. Hello dearie.” Mingzhu looks out the door way to see Zsikhou narrow his eyes, like he’s found something. She then looks back to the books. It looks like the normal array of things one might have in a small home. Fiction. Fairy tales. Story books. Some books about foreign cultures, decorum, as well as some guides on how to make various crafts, even a tea brewing guide. Nothing that appears out of sorts. She comes back out noticing Zsikhou is tense, like he expects it might blow up into violence at any moment. Or there could be traps around.
Sachiko sits over on one of the chairs around the table. Fwangzhu and Silgara also take a seat. Zsikhou keeps standing "So, I take it you wanted to discuss my aiding Suduzki in growing again, after what happened? Oh... Shamaness...?" She looks around.
Mingzhu walks back to the table. “Wonderful hospitality you have shown. I am Mingzhu, a stranded shamaness of the path doing what I can to help the people here." She goes over and sits down.
Sachiko smiles at her. "That is kind of you, dearie. Your name and those of your compatriots have been going around a lot of late. I know you've been helping with a lot of troubles around." She pours some tea cups and offers them over. And water for Fwangzhu. She smiles at Mingzhu, giving her the opening to speak next.
The shamaness accepts the cup. “You seem to know us, please tell us about yourself. Being an elder is a grave responsibility. The peasantry should always be on your mind and what to do what is right to guide and advise them."
Sachiko leans back after pouring tea "I know, I didn't feel I was up to it. The mayor seemed to think otherwise. But as for who I am... my name is Sachiko. I've lived here for many years now. I've done a lot of things in my time, mostly brewing tea, but knitting, sewing, used to fish before the years crept up on me, my arms aren't what they used to be, alas…. As for thinking of others, of course. I wouldn't refer to them with that term. They're people. Saying 'peasantry' has a way of demeaning others, even if you don't intend to do it, dear."
"I am a peasant myself and as I believe in these lands the peasantry is the middle class unlike back in my own homeland, something to be proud of?" Mingzhu asks watching her.
"But these days, mostly I try to give what advice and guidance from what I've learned and seen over the years. The young always have problems. I can't always solve them, but I can at least give them someone to listen to." She smiles, sipping tea. "Ah..." She takes a sip, putting the tea down. "You're not wrong in that sense, though in some contexts, it can be. Depending on our social stations, we all have different responsibilities, but especially when there is friction between those different bodies, it is easy to raise offense, even if none is intended."
Mingzhu bobs her head slightly. “The mayor tells me you mean to train an apprentice. Do you have one lined up?"
Then she shakes her head. "As for what the mayor mentions, I'm afraid I don't, not yet. Plus, I only heard the offer not long ago. I like it here, I don't know how well I'd be able to do the job myself. The years are taking their toll on me, after all. I could perhaps help train another to do it, but... as you said, it's a large responsibility, with large demands." She sips some tea, Silgara and Fwangzhu have their own drinks. "So, what do you think?" Sachiko asks.
"I'm not sure yet. Suduzki is a bit of a special case. You see before it was run by Yakuza and Ninja that put in place a young, impressionable, greedy elder. On the outside it went well. The people were rich by most standards and did not have to work or work very hard. I worry that some of these yakuza or ninja may have escaped the Celestial court's justice and may try to win back influence. How would you handle something like that. Those that try to influence you or your people?” Mingzhu asks.
Zsikhou narrows his eyes, watching Sachiko like he's weighing on whether to stab her on the spot or not.
Sachiko nods "It wasn't hard to figure out what was going on there. Regardless, they are going to need to learn to work by their own merits, rather than on top of what the Yakuza provided them with. In their case, one would need to handle stern enough parenting, but gentle. Like telling children they can't have the whole box of cookies but try to help wean them to learn to bake themselves."
"It won't be easy, I suspect many would rather throw tantrums or demand easy ways out. Unfortunately, they'll have to learn and grow on their own, and that means telling them no. Provide aid where warranted, but make it clear they need to stand on their own feet again." She considers a time "If you're worried about the Yakuza showing up again, it's not likely they will in the near future, after what happened. Them lying low for a few years then showing up is possible. At that point, I expect they'd probably open with a business deal, then by threats. Unfortunately, villagers, especially those like them, aren't going to be able to well defend themselves against a crime family like that. In that case, I'd counsel prudence, but careful consideration. A leader couldn't let such people walk all over their own, turning it into their little playground. That ultimately serves no one." She pauses, considering "If it were up to me, I'd make counter offers that I know they'd never accept, at least until they got the hint that they aren't welcome."
She pauses, taking another drink of tea. Zsikhou lashes his tail with irritation. Mingzhu blinks and peers into the ethereal plane for spirits. Sachiko looks over as Mingzhu does this, though doesn't seem too troubled. Mingzhu considers her options. She had meditated and recovered her spells. She looks to the old woman. "May I be excused for a moment? My colleagues may have some questions." She looks at the study where she can close the door and be alone for a few moments.
"Oh, of course dear." Zsikhou darts his attention to Mingzhu and back to Sachiko.
Mingzhu goes to the study and tries to close the door. Zsikhou has his foot in the way. She pulls him in and closes it. She sits down in full lotus and prepares to call a community spirit. Silgara, Fwangzhu, and Sachiko make idle conversation in the other room. She casts Trance first to draw a spirit to her. As she casts the second spell Commune with Lesser Spirit Zsikhou whispers “That’s her.” Just as the spirit enters the room.
Mingzhu asks softly, “Is Sachiko the Red Sonya that Zsikhou hunts?"
“Yes.”
Zsikhou rubs his face. "This one just told you that... oh, you might not be able to hear us while you're in that trance."
Mingzhu asks next, “Is this Sachiko reformed of her old ways?"
"Yes." The spirit answers
Mingzhu frowns, knowing this is going to get complicated. She then asks, “Will Sachiko make a good intern elder until a permanent elder can be found and trained?"
"Yes." The Spirit answers. The summoning fades. The spirit loses its form and fades away.
Zsikhou tugs at Mingzhu’s sleeve, “Wasn't sure if you could hear this one while you were casting, but, that Sachiko is Red Sonja." His claws flex.
“I heard Zsikhou I needed another source. In fact, she is but she has reformed herself and as far as the spirit is concerned, she would make a good intern elder....... The two of us must speak to her in private now.”
Zsikhou huffs, "My orders in regard to what to do to her are quite unambiguous, shamaness."
“Most likely an execution which may have been deserved in the past, but she has changed her ways. There must be room in these situations Zsikhou. She is not now what she was.”
Zsikhou looks at her squarely. "You're trusting that someone who made a bargain with Youkai, committed multiple murders, and more, is now going to be a community leader for a place that already has had major corruption problems and required gross correction. This seems like folly, Shamaness, and highly risky."
Mingzhu takes on a serious face weighing the gravity of the situation. “That is why we two need to speak to her alone. Candor from all parties will be required. We need to ferret this out together, I will not say no yet. Let us see how she handles it. Have you seen any traps or dangers in the house as of yet?”
Zsikhou looks over, narrowing his eyes, weighing his options. "If you want time, sure. But my orders on this matter are unambiguous. And they are orders." Then he shakes his head. "No, I haven't, no traps yet. And I was watching her make the tea, I don't think she poisoned it."
Mingzhu nods, “Orders are one thing but what if she is fully reformed Zsikhou? You would not be taking an innocent life that is for sure. However, is there no room in the celestial court for one who truly repents their sins?"
"She's not innocent, Mingzhu." Zsikhou looks over. "If another in the court were to oppose the measure... then..." He pauses, considering "No, I wouldn't want to cause complications in that. My master was very explicit in that he did not want my actions causing such an incident. However, we are simply letting someone get away with severe crimes because they were never caught for them before. That sets a bad precedent."
“Then can there be redemption without the necessity of a death sentence. A way to wash those sins? With a fair start, anew being that this person has reformed herself?” Mingzhu asks.
"You're gambling with offering such leniency to someone that is going to be given a position of power. Corruption should be rooted out, not coddled." He pauses "Retribution doesn't always mean death. But these aren't petty crimes or offenses we're dealing with here, Shamaness."
“What about a reprieve. a proving so to speak. If she has truly reformed by being made an elder, she can prove herself reformed. The reprieve being that justice is served out after she trains the new person for the job. If I can show you, she has indeed repented. Justice will be served but just delayed. So that when she does go, she can go fully washed of her misdoings and have a chance for enlightenment.”
He huffs, looking aside, "I'd be disobeying orders from my master. They were very clear in this regard." He pauses, thinking. "And it also means that she gets away with everything she has done in the past. Including bargaining with a Youkai, doing its dirty work and feeding others to it."
“No, she does not. For once a new elder is chosen or trained she will face the judgement for which she was condemned. I am not saying do not carry out the sentence. I am saying let her prove her worth before. Give her a chance at making some things right for a short time.”
Zsikhou shakes his head. "And that could take another many years, at which point she's likely to die naturally rather than end up facing any sentence." He sighs, "If you want us to talk to her and gage how she regards this, I'll allow it. But my orders from my master are very clear in this matter."
“If She proves truly reformed and ready to face judgement, I have one request that before you carry out sentence that you go back to your master with a full explanation of the situation. He may reconsider.”
Zsikhou rubs the side of his head, his eyes dart, perhaps looking for head pats and hugs vulnerable, or worried, then he shakes his head. "He won't." He lets a breath out, “Let’s get this done.”
But I understand the dearies in Suduzki need some direction after what happened." I can't always solve them, but I can at least give them someone to listen to." She smiles, sipping tea.

Re: She Came from the Sea
Mingzhu opens the door and comes back into the main room followed by Zsikhou. “Fwangzhu, Silgara, Zsikhou and I would like to speak to Sachiko alone, please." She sits back down at the table.
When she returns to the room, Silgara is nodding to Sachiko, who looks at her. Sachiko says to Silgara "Whatever trouble is following you dear, keeping it close is a large burden. Regardless, I do hope that you can find some peace in your sojourn."
Silgara sips her tea, then puts the cup down. "Thank you, Sachiko, I appreciate your wisdom." Sachiko smiles at her then looks over at Mingzhu and Zsikhou.
Fwangzhu is the first to speak up, "Yeah uh, any particular reason for that, Shamaness? I mean I was asked to be here for the whole elder training discussion bit by the mayor."
Mingzhu nods "A problem has come up that Zsikhou and I have to speak to Sachiko alone about. It... ….. requires some privacy."
Silgara looks over, seemingly looking a touch worried, then looks at Sachiko, perhaps figuring something out. Fwangzhu looks over. "Think I'd prefer to stick around." Mingzhu frowns looking into her tea bowl then looks at Zsikhou. He looks back and shrugs. Seeming indifferent, though also looks like he's a bound away from going to just outright kill Sachiko if she makes any wrong moves.
"If you stay Fwangzhu nothing said here will ever leave this room. Do you understand?” The shamaness says.
Sachiko looks over, she doesn't seem afraid, but she does seem to instinctively pick up on that something's not right. Fwangzhu huffs "The fuck is that supposed to mean?" He looks over. "You trying to pull some under-the-table deal about the eldership or something?"
Zsikhou narrows his eyes at Fwangzhu. "No." That's all he says, but he says it sharp like a whip.
Sachiko looks between them. "They're your companions and friends, aren't they, Mingzhu? I can say that keeping secrets from those you are close with isn't a healthy way to live. It can eat at you, and cause tension and distrust. Better to share your concerns than bottle them up, I think."
Mingzhu sighs and considers her words carefully. “Sachiko, you have quite the past behind you. I have spoken with the spirits. I would like you to explain the whole truth and how you got here to where you are now."
Zsikhou looks over, there's a flick of his wrist, the Siangham comes out, electrified. "Red Sonja." But he makes no move to attack... yet.
Sachiko looks over, she doesn't seem surprised. She just takes a deep breath, closing her eyes. "I had the feeling when the Kami came here, this might happen..."
Mingzhu looks at Zsikhou with a dead serious expression. “Put it away. I will not allow someone to die in their own home!"
Silgara looks over, blinking, "What... d..." She seems to be getting ready for combat.
Fwangzhu also seems shocked "What the heck?!"
Mingzhu stands, “Honor the fact that you are a guest here, Zsikhou.”
Zsikhou looks over to Mingzhu, giving her a hard look, then back to Sachiko, not taking eyes off of her. "As agreed, she gets to explain herself." The Siangham goes back in its sheath.
Sachiko looks over to Mingzhu. "I haven't been called that in over thirty-five years... the first few, I feared something like this might happen. Now... it feels so different."
Fwangzhu looks over "The fuck? That..."
Sachiko looks over at Fwangzhu. "Times and people change over time, and I've had a lifetime of mistakes to learn from, Fwangzhu."
Mingzhu puts up her hand. “Everyone calm. We need to talk this out.”
Zsikhou looks over, flexing his claws impatiently, not taking his eyes off of Sachiko. Sachiko looks to Mingzhu "I suppose you want me to start from the beginning; it might be best I start off that way. Yes, it's true. I used to be a Ninja that went by Red Sonja. I do have a lot of blood on my hands." She takes a sip of tea, pauses, then speaks, "Everyone has justifications for the horrible things they do. For me, I could say that we were under the rulership of a cruel lord who abused us. And it would be true. I first became Red Sonja to strike back against cruelty and abuse. But that was the starting point.
It's easy to convince oneself that something terrible is justified. And after it's done once, another happens, and another, and another. I couldn't do it myself. Strike back how I wanted to. So, I sought out a bound Youkai and in exchange for their help and power to fight off the lord and his men that I opposed, I freed them from a binding and fed them those who had bound them."
Fwangzhu looks on, horrified, he clearly had no conception that Sachiko could ever do something like that. Silgara also looks very shocked. Mingzhu nods and listens.
Sachiko continues, “I continued on like that for some time. Fighting, killing, but... in the end..." She pauses, "I found that there wasn't an end. That things just kept spiraling, getting worse and worse. And as much as I had convinced myself that my actions were justified, as time went on, I could see that I was essentially becoming just as much of a tormentor to them, as they had been to me. The rage that I once felt sustained me just... exhausted. No matter how much I did, it didn't help with feeling empty inside afterwards.
So, one day, I simply left, disappeared. I tried to find a remote island to start a new life, where no one would know me. I spent the first few years always looking over my shoulders for someone to come claim retribution. But it never came. I settled down, joined village life. I found myself with more peace and contentment here in all that time than I ever did as a Ninja. I've made a home here and did what I could to just... live like a person again.
And over time, it was like my past was simply a bad memory, something buried and forgotten. And I was fine with that. Fine with leaving that life behind." Sachiko sighs, a look over to Silgara. "But sometimes ghosts of the past do catch up with us. The bad ones sometimes follow us. It's not always fair, but it happens."
Silgara seems to give a pained nod in response, like she understands something of what she's saying there. "I just wanted to be done with it all." Sachiko says, "And for a long time, I was."
Mingzhu nods, "The spirits have said as much. They told me you had reformed and would make a good intern elder until a new one is trained."
Sachiko leans back, looking to Mingzhu and the others, to see if they have any other questions
Sachiko looks over. "Maybe... I have a lifetime of mistakes to learn from; I wouldn't want others doing what I did. Yet... it was one reason in the back of my mind that made me feel unworthy of the position. Or maybe part of me just wanted to hide it further."
"You have been sentenced by an arm of the celestial court for your sins but since you have reformed, I have asked for a reprieve. If this reprieve happens, would you carry out being an elder until a new one is trained knowing that when that elder takes his or her station the sentence will be carried out?"
Sachiko looks over to Mingzhu, considering, a breath out. Then she looks at Zsikhou, then back to Mingzhu. "That's... you're making a dangerous move there for my sake. I appreciate it... but... are you sure that's for the best. Besides..." She looks to Zsikhou. "The Kami, I expect, has orders to kill me here and now, or as soon as he is able to."
Zsikhou replies sharply "Correct."
Sachiko looks over to Mingzhu. "I know that my duty, if I take the job of preparing a new elder, it will likely take me the rest of my life. That retribution would never come if I were so protected. You're asking to thwart the Kami's duty."
Fwangzhu looks over "Come on, you can't be serious? Kill her? She's a harmless old lady. What the fuck would be the point?!"
Zsikhou sharply looks to Fwangzhu. "I have orders."
Then Zsikhou looks to Sachiko "And I cannot allow corruption to spread."
Fwangzhu just seems shocked, not even angry. "Corruption? Her? The... that can't be right!!... That..."
Silgara just looks down and away...
Mingzhu carefully gages the room then says, “I am willing to gamble this request for it may be the best for the community. Ultimately it will be up to the Kami's master as he will go back and explain the whole of the situation. It will most likely say no. I am still requesting it. For it will give you time to redeem some of these misdeeds of yours while you are doing this. Ultimately it is up to the typhoon dragon whether sentence is carried out now or delayed giving you time to equal things out within your soul."
Zsikhou looks over. "He won't. My orders are clear." The Siangham comes out again, buzzing with electricity.
Sachiko looks over, a breath out, as she knows what is likely to come. She doesn't make any move to escape or defend herself. "I know what kind of master the Kami serves. That one has no mercy in them. Nor will they have any for the Kami if they disobey them."
Mingzhu stands. "You promised Zsikhou you would go back. While you are gone, I will stay here to make sure Sachiko stays until we have an answer."
Zsikhou looks over to Mingzhu "This one promised to hear her out." There's a pause... it's clear Zsikhou is at least willing to hear Mingzhu out. "We know what happened, and what the situation is now. I have my orders, and we know she has done severe crimes. And we are risking a lot giving her a position of authority. Tell me then. Do you have any reasons I should disobey my orders?" There's also an unsaid, but unspoken question of if Mingzhu will stop him if he tries to carry out his execution here.
"I will not let you do this in her home it is sacrilege. I will not stop it outside of her home. Still, I plead that you take this back to your master for re-evaluation of all that is known that this woman has reformed and wishes to make some amends for her past sins. If the answer is no, I will not stop you Zsikhou."
Zsikhou looks over to Mingzhu, looking at her squarely at that. He makes no aggressive moves towards her. "This one knows what he will say. It's only really a delaying measure. and we both know it." There's a pause, if Mingzhu has anything else to say on the matter.
"Then it will be delayed a night. One night will not matter. Except to make your master angry with me. I can accept that. I can also prepare Sachiko for what is to come when you come back tomorrow. Any affairs she may wish to get in order."
Fwangzhu looks over "One night? Come on Shamaness, this... can't be right."
Silgara looks over, perhaps a silent plea for Mingzhu to make Zsikhou back down more fully. Zsikhou shrugs "If it's only one day, it's likely not going to be relevant there."
Mingzhu brings her chin up. “There is a small chance the dragon may have mercy Fwangzhu. Let’s hope on that small chance.”
Sachiko looks over, shaking her head "They won't."
Zsikhou looks back to Mingzhu. It definitely looks like he's wrestling with the prospect of disobeying the order and carrying it out now... Mingzhu adds, “Let us hope the gods are merciful.”
Fwangzhu looks over, speaking up desperately "Come on, wasn't she supposed to be or train the next elder of Suduzki? You've gotta make that appeal, I don't think we'll get another one without her."
Mingzhu looks the kobold dead in the eyes, “If you wish me to come with you Zsikhou I will fight for this woman’s soul.
Zsikhou shakes some... "My orders were to do it now..."
“And I have asked for an appeal due to decades of reform.” Mingzhu retorts.
He shakes some. Trembling. Weapon shaking a bit in his hand. He snaps over towards Sachiko "Never again. NEVER AGAIN! Or I WILL FIND YOU!!" There's a hiss, then he slams his weapon back in his holster, then storms out of the home, huffing, rapidly, but also like he's exhausted
Fwangzhu and Silgara both reflexively back away from the kobold as he storms out. Mingzhu nearly faints.

Re: She Came from the Sea
Sachiko looks over, a breath of relief out... she looks over to Mingzhu "That... was a brave thing you did there. Part of me wonders if it was foolish, but... oh dear." Fwangzhu rushes over, then tries to help Mingzhu stay upright.
“It is my job to............ to do what is best for the community to which I live. Not...… not my own self-interest. There may be a price to pay for.......... for challenging a dragon. If I save a soul and help the people. It’s worth it.” Mingzhu cries.
Sachiko looks over "It won't be you who pays the price. The Kami however... he's going to have to pay one. And he knows it. He backed down for your sake." Mingzhu nods and lays her head down on the table.
Sachiko looks over "You'll look after him, won't you dear?"
“Yes.”
Sachiko nods to Mingzhu "Thank you, dear." She pauses "A... moment, there's something in my bedroom I should fetch." She goes over to her bedroom. Fwangzhu and Silgara are both silent, quite overwhelmed by what they saw. They move close to Mingzhu but wait. Sachiko returns with a small case. "Some things I had from my old life. I expect that today it cost the Kami something precious. This might help them ease the loss. And after today, maybe it's best I part with them." She offers it to Mingzhu.
The shamaness nods taking it. “When he comes back if sentence is to be carried out you must go with him peacefully. I will give you last rites in the morn whether the answer is a yes or no.”
Sachiko looks over, after a pause. "Somehow, I don't think that will happen. You involved yourself as a member of the Celestial court. As wrathful as his master is likely to be, your interceding as you did means that he would need to go through others in the Celestial court for that. I expect they will likely end up debating the particulars for years after my natural end."
Mingzhu nods, “We will see what happens then.”
Sachiko goes to sit back down on one of the chairs "Well, was there anything else I could get you dears?"
Mingzhu asks, “More tea, a good story. We have a long night ahead."
Sachiko smiles "Of course, dear." She pours some additional tea for everyone. There's a palpable sense of relief there... Sachiko looks over "Oh and, I'll make sure the mayor knows I accept his proposal. A new lease on life, I feel I should make the most of it."
Mingzhu weakly states, “The spirits do not lie.”
As long as they opt to stay, Sachiko doesn't seem to run out of stories, Mingzhu and company can stay as long as they like. Mingzhu looks over at Fwangzhu and Silgara for their reactions to it all. Fwangzhu seems very relieved that Sachiko was spared. Silgara remains a bit more apprehensive but also seems to appreciate the mercy shown. Sachiko, before the night gets that long, actually stops after one story. "I... noticed the Kami hasn't returned. It may be good to check on him."
Mingzhu turns to Fwangzhu and Silgara. "I have to stay here until this is done. If the dragon himself comes, I will face him alone. I don’t want you two involved.”
Sachiko looks over. "I understand dear, but it's not the dragon I worry about. It's the Kami. He just disobeyed an order from his master, and that is something that is near unthinkable to them. And I doubt he has many he can relate with." She continues, “That he would listen to you at all in this circumstance suggests he values you highly. I don't think it would do him well to be alone right now."
Mingzhu nods, "Fwangzhu, Silgara will you guard Sachiko until I return?"
Fwangzhu nods "Yeah, sure thing."
Mingzhu goes out and searches for Zsikhou. Zsikhou isn't far, it looks like he only moved a few houses away and just went to slump and sat against the edge of one. He's looking down, in dire need of snuggles, moping. He's not even looking around or keeping alert like his usual self. And visually, Mingzhu notices that the mark that's on his head and muzzle has dimmed, like whatever energy was there is gone now. She goes over and sits down beside him.
Zsikhou just looks up slowly, like he's drained of energy. He doesn't say anything yet. She waits. He just sits there for a long time... Then he lets out a heavy sigh "This better not..." A pause "Sparing her better end up not making things worse..." But unlike his usual harsh and decisive inflection, his words sound tired and weak.
"The spirits they do not lie" She sighs, "I had to make a stand. I'm sorry."
"I'm not blaming you." Zsikhou says, "You did your duty as a servant of the Celestial Court."
She nods.
He pauses, looking ahead, staring ahead. "And this one failed to do his." Zsikhou breathes heavily, "This one could have done it anyways. Knew you couldn't physically stop me. But... relented regardless."
Zsikhou breathes heavily "Still, there's more work to be done. The problems that assail these islands are still present and require correction. I'll... I'll deal with the consequences of this one's insubordination when it's time."
"When that time comes, I will fight for your soul as hard as I fought for hers. If that means facing your master myself...…. I will."
Zsikhou shakes his head. "You wouldn't have jurisdiction. Best you don't."
Mingzhu looks at him. “You are a friend and companion of all of us. I will do what I can for you.
Sachiko left you a box. It is a thank you.”
Zsikhou looks over, closing his eyes for a moment. "That's one of the first lessons this one learned under his master to be their executioner. To never let sentimentality get in the way of doing what needed to be done." Then he pauses, looking over to the box, inspecting it for traps. But eventually, he takes it and opens it. There's a Siangham and Shuriken inside.
Mingzhu sighs and looks up, “Something the other side of the celestial court will never admit. Sentimentality, hope, being of good nature: They are not weaknesses, they can be strengths.”
He takes the items … "The items she killed with, most likely. If she weren't sentimental, she'd have probably gotten rid of them, never letting others find her secret." Then a breath out, "Maybe... though it will likely take time to see which of us is right about her in the end."
Mingzhu nods, “There is a word for what you did in these lands. It is an important part of the code these warriors so highly value...…... Jin, I think. You showed Jin this day. Perhaps you too are changing seeing the world in a better light then when we first met.”
Zsikhou looks over to Mingzhu, a pause, considering "Maybe... this one never felt any of his prior executions were unjustified. Still don't. This one knows there are times when wrath and gross correction are needed." There's a pause. "Can say I withheld to not cause conflict with another part of the court, but..." A pause, Zsikhou doesn't further articulate the thought.
“Compassion can have a place in the world. You just have to know in your gut it’s the right thing to do at the time. This time my gut said yes, and I think deep down yours said the same.”
Zsikhou pauses, he doesn't reply for some time, just... sits there, taking it all in. "Maybe..." He finally speaks. Zsikhou breathes out, then goes to stand, slowly, shakily. "We still have work to do. We'd better keep to it."
“It will be a new life ahead. We'll all be here to help you adjust, Zsikhou. Balan, T'kharr, Silgara even Minamoto and Fwangzhu. You have friends to help you get through this.”
Zsikhou huffs, considering. "This one didn't think much of the others of our band. Could tell that Silgara was always hiding things from this one and could not conceal her distaste. Minamoto and Fwangzhu's infighting and incompetence is grating. The other two foreigners show warning signs and aberrant behavior, though can respect the Paladin's devotion to his patron."
Mingzhu smiles then laughs lightly. “We are mortals. We all fail; we all have our flaws. That is what living is about learning from your failings and misdeeds as you walk toward enlightenment. Maybe you won’t get it right the first time or the second, but it is a path everyone follows through their many lives. eventually we will get there. Just as you will.”
"This one thought they had their path set. Clarity and duty." Zsikhou pauses "Disobeying this one's master and their charge like he has... that's a significant failure." He shakes his head. "But still have other duties and executions to enact. We both know that there's bigger than Sachiko at work around."
Mingzhu nods, “So there is.”
Zsikhou stands, stretching some, then a sigh "Well, let’s get back to work then. I... " He pauses, a sigh "Doubt this one's usual meditation will clear his mind now. Can save it for later."
Mingzhu nods and walks back with him. Once back at Sachiko's house, Silgara and Fwangzhu are speaking with Sachiko, this time it seems to be Fwangzhu's that's more engaged than Silgara, but then they look over when Mingzhu and Zsikhou enter.
Mingzhu looks at them. “All is well. Let not our sacrifices be in vain, Sachiko.”
Sachiko looks over, a nod, she looks over to Zsikhou, also seeming to take note that the mark on his head has dimmed. "Of course, I'll do my best to prepare the next elder of Suduzki. Ah, I do enjoy Port Ginji, but times change, and perhaps it's where I am meant to be."
Zsikhou looks over, a heavy breath out. "Think what we needed here is concluded, then."
Mingzhu nods.
Fwangzhu looks over. "You live a long time yet, okay Sachiko?"
Sachiko smiles at Fwangzhu. "All things fade in time, but I'll do what I can with what time I have."
Silgara looks over, then looks to Zsikhou. "You aren't going to try to murder her at night when we're not looking, I hope?"
Zsikhou looks squarely back to Silgara. "No. She won't face further retribution from myself or my master."
“Zsikhou has made his choice and paid the price Silgara. There will be no murdering tonight.” Mingzhu states.
The kobold grimaces. "It's on the rest of you if she ends up falling back into corruption now. Whatever. We have other work to do. Let’s go."
Fwangzhu looks over, even he seems to realize what kind of price Zsikhou might have paid here. Silgara just nods to that "Good."
Sachiko goes to clean up the tea cups, then looks at Zsikhou. But perhaps thinks better of saying anything. The party seems ready to depart. Mingzhu leads them back to the inn for a well-deserved rest.
