Anyone reading my posts regarding NWN here or at any other NWN-related board knows Im a curious fella.

So... what team are Travis joining? My question of the day. ;)

an answer?

Hey Grov,
You do know what curiosity did to the cat, don't you? ;) I actually invited him to join the CTP team, and then log onto the forums here at the CTP to join in our conversations about doing a sound/music pack. It was easier to invite him to join here than to try and cut and paste an email to him anything anyone posted that had something related to a sound or music pak that we have been talking about the last few months. Hopefully he will join us, and start contributing his own ideas (as a music creator) to whatever sound/music project we discuse in this forum. Hope I answered your question...

You know, if you ask nicely, Christopher MAY be able to create a sub set of forums for you guys to play around in. Something specific, and quasi private (meaning, members only access).

However, don't expect us to actually add a MUSIC pack to the workload of the CTP team, and I won't be available to help 'manage' folks much. I can boost an account level etc, but I don't have the time, energy, or inclination to actually start managing a music project.

I do, however, wish you great luck with the idea. Definitely room for improvement on the music side of things for NWN.

Thanks for the support Bannor...and of course we will credit the CTP team with whatever we can craft for a music or sound pack. I'm all for it Grov. There definately seems to be some interest in a project like this, and I think this would not only be a good project...but perhaps even be something that could be used for both NWN1 and NWN2. Hey Chris...Did I say PLEASE? Thanks guys....

A Community Music Pack would be much appreciated. I recently downloaded a humongous amount of music files from NwVault for the purposes of picking out my preferred tracks but if your project would, if effect, do that for me then that would be great. :D
Music is pretty subjective. Perhaps even moreso than graphics. I know a couple people who wouldn't hesistate to put Aqua or MC Hammer music as the soundtrack to their mod. :p: That is what they believe is fitting, though. I'd encourage you to choose yourselves or gather from a limited pool of opinions when deciding what is a top-knotch composition. There will never be a general consensus.

Your post sums up most of the thoughts we've had in this thread so far. Good having peeps throwing around their thoughts on the subject.
I think we will have different themed packs but with MC hammer and such we do have to adhere the Copyright-thingy (and IMHO, saved :p: )

Did you find any gems in the boatload of music you've downloaded you're more than welcome to share your experiences with us!

CMP - I'd like to help

Post by CWebb »

Grov and RAVEN - I'm interested in helping out with this project. Since I'm waiting for some tilesets to get released, I've stopped working on new parts of my module. Instead, I've been poking around looking for music, as well. While I'd like to help with the CTP, I can't work on it from home, since it requires an on-line connection, and my dial-up is 28.8 on a GOOD day (gotta love rural houses). However, I can download music at work and evaluate it, and I'd also be happy to contact authors/copyright owners about permission to use their works. I've found a lot of good works that are royalty-free, but require one-time license purchases.

I'll take a listen and see what I come up with. One thing I've noticed simply from searching is that I can't find much battle music at all, let alone much that meshes well with Michael Hoenig's or Jeremy Seoul's. Perhaps people don't really want to mess with battle music since it requires separate concluding riffs and so forth. I'm not done looking yet, so perhaps I have just hit a dry spot in that music area.

A basic plan?

Post by raven280 »

Hey Guys,
I agree with Grov, we should not even consider using anything that may be copywrite protected, or produced professionally for either movies, albums, or other video games. I would suggest we start off by looking at the original compositions that have been submitted to the vault over the past four years, and specifically target items that are highly rated and represent several different styles. For example, we dont want to have a whole bunch of tavern pieces, and be short on graveyard or spooky sounds. I have not researched how many individual pieces of music we can add on top of the standard bioware pieces, and I am sure there must be some limit. Also we will need to contact Bioware to request use of some of those official spaces (ie. like 2da's) so we know what limit we have to work with and will not have to change things if Bioware were to release any new music pieces later. If Chris sets us up with our own section of forums for this project, we can start talking about the specifics and compare notes. Hey CWebb, thanks for joining us and offering to help. Every spring I do some of my best skiing in rural colorado. For now, I would say go ahead and start downloading music from the vault, and get an idea about what you like or think we should include. If Travis and other creative people get on board this project, they may be even able to make new stuff exclusively for this project....
