The Dragons Neck
Greetings everyone.
A new server has landed on the Beamdog boards. The dragon's neck. I've gone through their entire Wiki and am surprised and delighted by what I have seen so far.
I have not gone into the game as of yet. I wanted to take my time and shore up some outstanding stories and such. Thus far from what I have read on their wiki is that their philosophy and general ideas on how to treat both players and dms line up with my own ideas. It's almost as though they have taken some of their ideas from this very site.
In regard to dms they plainly state that dms are not allowed to hole key positions in the game and that the dms work for the players not the other way around. I also found their philosophies on how they treat cannon refreshing and directly link with my own ideas. in that whatever year you start your world past cannon is accurate but future cannon can be changed according to game play.
I'll go on next weekend and see if all of their ideas are really incorporated into their world. i am sure it will be fun.

Re: The Dragons Neck
Howdy all.
So far, I've been playing this server the last 3 or 4 weekends. I have found it way off the beaten path of your average server which makes me kind of want to do a running review of it to see how it goes.
The problem of course is in most circumstances as soon as I do a review the long knives come out and go after me. Sigil Planar legends the last server I reviewed didn't even warm up the knives. They stuck them in me within two days.
I do have a whole lot of observations about the server both exceptional and things they really need to work on. So, what I will do sometime in the next week is put some of these observations down. It won't be review yet just some general observations I usually need 5 or 6 months time on a server to do a proper review. With this one I expect 8 to 9 months due to the server's very unique nature. I'll post some of those comments here this week hopefully.

Re: The Dragons Neck
TDN is a very heavy role-playing server so you may have to adjust certain expectations. Their level limit is 18 at least for now and its an extremely low magic server in that you won't find very many magic items if any at all. I'm currently level 5 and have no magic items.
As said before Dms have strict rules that are outlined here:
https://www.dragonsneck.com/wiki/DM-Guide-Expectations
You can copy and paste to have a look.
In game player names are garbled to keep some kind of anonymity.
You cannot have sex on the server and romance is frowned upon.
This has always been both a problem and highlight of servers. It's a touchy subject because even though some servers are only 18 and up kids still find their way on them.
When I made and ran Harvest Moon. I had a long talk with my wife Angel. We decided that if there are two adults in the game, they should be able to do what adults do. but if an adult and a kid started mingling then we would go after the adult not only ban them but seek out authorities give them the adults information, we have on them.
Each server has to take the matter of cybersex seriously and figure out How they will handle in game relationships. I won't begrudge TDN's decisions here. It's a delicate subject and not dealing with it at all is a way to go about it. In fact, a logical way to go about it.
It does take away 1 of the 4 pastimes of man to which 90% of plots are based around. That being War, Power, Money and Sex.
Banned players are publicly called out and notes are added most times as to why they were banned. giving players the reasons and the why. I think that is a very good policy. In other words, they are saying, "We are banning this player. Here is the reason. Here are the notes, screenshots, and logs to back it up." That way players know exactly why a player was banned so that it is known they were banned with good reason.
However, I noticed one player was banned because of language issues (they could not speak English and none of the staff could speak the players language). I do not think that was a reasonable ban. Perhaps some alternative could be accomplished instead of banning.
one other note I want to put down. Many of the tilesets seem to be original and most are fantastic. A far cry from what I myself can accomplish and I'm an HoF. I would give a gold dragon award to whoever made the elven forest set. I do suspect that the elven forest tileset was made by Gavin (666). It has his signature all over it. Especially the oversized flora. I worked with him testing one of his wilderness sets before and notice he did like to oversize the flora he liked to add.
Most tileset builders go for as much realism as they can muster. TDN makes them look slightly more cartoonish in nature. It's more of a creative flair I think. the colors of textures are slightly more vibrant than reality and it seems their transparencies are more adaptive to the setting. Their water is a bit of a letdown though more afterthought than anything. though I'll have to see much more to make a final judgement on that.
Thats all the notes I wish to say for now. I may have other thoughts in the near future and when I do my review, I'll look back here as a reference.

Re: The Dragons Neck
more notes:
I find that most large PW's tend to use discord tickets for getting a dm's attention now days. It's the same with TDN.
I never liked these tickets. they are too prone to misinterpretation on both sides. and they seem somehow cold and impersonal. Also, I never had a ticket work out for me even for the simplest requests that is until now.
I wasn't really looking to put in an admin ticket at all for a long while still something fell into my lap.
my character is a totem based shamaness tied specifically to the tree spirits of Toril. She went to a conclave meeting to observer and found out that the conclave which she isn't a member of (at least yet) wanted to contact the tree spirits.
Now the way my shamaness communes with her spirits is she goes into a state of hibernation for 5 or 10 days. Her body stays in the prime, but her mind and soul walk the border ethereal where she communes with the tree spirits, She learns, ask questions and is generally somewhat like their apprentice (shes 6th level) until she can become the voice of the trees with such a deep connection with them that she just knows what they want and can be their ambassador to the world at large.
So, I decide to make a ticket to the dms asking them. When she communes with the tree spirits she will ask them. "What is the history of the scar? What if anything will the trees say to her?" I'm para phrasing.
I made the ticket and waited. They are supposed to get in contact with me in 24 hours but the event surrounding this whole thing is in 3 weeks so 'There's plenty of time."
24 hours goes by...... Nothing. 48 hours goes by and I give them a bump. Asking something like Its a new pw and everything so you probably have alot of tickets but could I get something back?"
The next morning a dm wrote, 'yes we have a lot of tickets....please wait."
Ok so I wait almost a week and a dm finally comes on. She gave me a rp prompt about what the trees felt in the forest about the scar. The sort of patted me on the head like now go out and rp it.
And so I went out and played it out like a bad B horror flick. (heh put my hands to my cheeks and screamed as Jason is about to disembowel me.)
She also appologized for the dms taking so long to get to the ticket.
So. 1. it was a very hard rp question in general that needed time for the Dms to think about it
2. TDN is a new pw that probably gets 100 tickets or so a week
3. and most important I got an apology for the dms taking longer than the standard time.
The dms not only answered the question. They did it with a hell of a lot of class. They are definitely aware that the players are customers, so This is the very first ticket I have done that I'm completely satisfied on. And they gave me enough information so I could do something with my character rp wise. Thats the first time that's happened to me.
I am completely stunned and immensely happy about how this ticket went. I still think it's a very impersonal system overall. But these dms handled it the best I have ever seen. Kudos to you, your professionalism and class in dealing with the ticket. Keep it up with all the players.

Re: The Dragons Neck
A couple more notes I want to mention:
Scripting wise the server has been very clean in general. I have not noticed any broken loops (too much information errors.) I did notice a couple of errors two weeks ago. They were divide by Zero errors. Not something I would expect on a pw. the reason why is usually these are SQL errors, and they are very easily fixable. It usually takes just a line to fix these rather mundane errors.
The good thing is that these errors seem to disappear this weekend, and it seems like they handled it very quickly.
The one big irritation I have about the world is the customization of your character. When you make your character, they have all new models so character customization is not done when you make them.
It is supposed to happen in the next area you go to that's similar to a library in appearance. Theres lots of tutorials to read there but I could not find one that tells you about customizing your head models, eyes, hair and size. I also could not find an actual station to do it. I gave up looking for it after about 1/2 hour in that place.
I come to find out there is an interface to changing your head model in the game through command prompt. When I tried it, I could change my hair and lip make up but I could not change anything else. head model, height, large/small stature, or eye color.
Other people figured it out and it seems to be something you just have to find but that's one thing I'm calling out as bogus. When you come into that library there should be a great big sign (THIS IS WHERE/HOW YOU CUSTOMIZE YOUR CHARACTER)
I however do happen to like the basic head model. I'm just a bit irritated I couldn't figure out a way to make her 4 ft 11 instead of whatever she is and her eyes look gold not green like in the stories and rp. But I can certainly rp it.
I can live with Eibhlin as she is now though. I will make a test character with the name (testing character customization at some time to figure all this stuff out and report it here.

Dm's are really good at admin stuff on the server and off.
I threw a couple curveballs at them and they caught one of them and threw it back. good job on their part. (I noted it on my records.)

Re: The Dragons Neck
I mentioned yesterday that I threw a couple of curveballs at the dms on discord and they caught one and threw it back at me. I think I was figuring on the wrong one which makes me want to comment a bit about it.
TDN is a very unique server. Theres quiet a few regular buttons you can push on most servers or on their discord servers that get dms panties all tied in a knot. and of course, when I test staff of servers out, I start pushing a button here and there occasionally. I try not to make it a habit.
TDN is a bit confusing because some of the regular buttons don't give me a response at all. It's like ok these guys are pretty lenient on the admin side. which of course gives their customers players a bit more freedom that most pws. A good thing in my own opinion.
then you stumble upon a button they get all tied up about and scratch your head going now why is this such a hot button for TDN?
So, I did a lot of thinking on why the two buttons I pushed and got a response from were such an issue and I think I finally figured it out.
I think what they are trying to do is stop the potential for meta-gaming before it ever happens. The reason is because both time I got dinged is for saying how my character felt about a certain situation. Which potentially someone could take and use to meta-game me.
Now most NWN staff is reactionary to meta-gaming. someone metagames someone and the victim so to speak reports it. Then staff deals with.
It seems that the TDN staff is being somewhat proactive to this. So, when they see something that could potentially be meta-game they hope on it like a horse whose tails on fire. In other words, they go to the potential victim and say "Cut it out"
Now is this a legitimate way to handle things? I honestly don't know at this time. The jury is out for me. I'll keep watching and learning about the server. It may be that they have something here maybe not. I'm going to take a bit of a neutral stance as of yet. It is quite a new and novel approach to the problem, and it still will not stop the accidental, inadvertent, and incidental mega-gaming that from time to time we all do simply slipping up.
One thing that has me slightly miffed is this.
You have the main TDN discord server. I'm a member of course but I don't read or participate much over there.
I play an elf and was invited to The Home of the Y'lellarien discord server. This is an offshoot discord server from TDN for elves and conclave members. Figure all the people that live in the local forest. (druid conclave and two tribes of elves."
Now on this server they have a Non affiliation statement. This is what it says:
No Affiliation: We are not officially affiliated with The Dragon's Neck. This server is intended to be used as a collective resource and community for elves of Y'Tellarien. Please keep unrelated discussion to a minimum. You must be a member of the main TDN discord in order to remain a member of this one. Further, if you are banned/muted from the main TDN disc, we will reflect that here.
So, there's already in the same paragraph a statement of non-affiliation: but then we are affiliated in the last lines.
Now each time I threw a few curveballs to them I did it in Home of Y'tellarien but the dms hit me with a ticked in the other server the TDN server. So, the non-affiliation doesn't wash at all. The Dms on the TDN discord definitely control what happens on Home of the Yelltarian no and, ifs, or buts about it.
As far as any TDN or affiliated discord server my suggestion would be to be a bit cautious in how you interact. Mostly because the staffs' hot buttons are sometimes very different from what you would normally expect. I am thinking myself of backing away from Home of the Y'tellarien and only going on occasionally to pick up events and such or make a few geezerly old man funny comments. In this way there's no potential in me stirring up a hornet's nest. I can just play my pc and eventually do my review.

Re: The Dragons Neck
Another note about Dms:
Earlier this week a discussion came up on the home of Y'elltarien about the bleeding of players and the fatigue the players in general were starting to have on TDN. I suggested that the Dms need to pick it up a bit and show their stuff even if it's just a few one shots or small 3 and 4 leg campaigns.
I caught a bunch of hell from other players for it. Even though I did say every nicely something like hey you know it's time Dms to show their stuff to offset player boredom.
Well even though I took a lot of flak from players the Dms seemed to be listening. The very next morning there was a post about people walking through the forest capturing others and sacrificing them to a dark god.
It does mean the Dms here do listen to players and weight what they are saying. I think a really good job on that to the Dms of TDN. You can only go so long without events or between events on a role-playing server before you start to bleed players to other worlds more active in this regard. It's just the name of the game.
You can get away with no events on a hack and slash or power gaming server. They are set up to be pretty much, worlds without the need for dm quests and campaigns. but a role-playing server is quite a different creature all together. You need good creative Dms doing campaigns and helping players develop their characters. On a role-playing server dms are guides and provide the means for a player character to develop, devolve, evolve and be able to tell their story.
So Dms, you did really well by listening to reacting in the best way possible. Kudos.

Re: The Dragons Neck
Note about treasure and quests:
at 6th level I still have not seen a magic item in game thus far. and Im still wearing the original shoddy leather armor I bought as soon as I came in game. Now I know that there are magic items in game here and there but it seems that they are so rare its impractical to think you'll be the one in 50 or so that gets one.
The world does not lend itself to quests and I have not found one as of yet. I don't think they exist either since your getting all your xp from rp or dm quests so they say. havent been in a dm quest yet but i'll eventually get a chance I think.

Re: The Dragons Neck
Well, another note and impromptu and inadvertent test. I was killing a bad guy, and it exploded hurting some animals the animal faction on the server turns enemy.... all of them faction scripting definitely needs work.
Im waiting on dms and at this time they are telling me to go screw myself I'll wait a little longer before confirming all this. I may be misinterpreting it.
Ok so let me go over this again. I killed a creature it exploded and hurt several animals which are a faction. I had every animal over multipole areas attack me. Next, I went to the elven place and a few people told me to contact a dm on the dm channel. no one answered.
Ok so there might not have been a dm on at the time fair. I went to discord to have this problem corrected. It's a common faction problem with NWN. when I administrated server it was corrected immediately, and we made sure the player was compensated for anything they lost.
Unfortunately, it seems that's not the way it works on Dragon's neck. The dms on the main discord server basically told me to go screw myself. the ones on the Y'tellarien server felt my pain but would do nothing. I respawned dominated the stag got my loot bag back and exited the server.
This is really bad look for the admins on the server and a really bad look for whoever scripted the factions. now I have two grave wounds something you really dont want on this server it will probably take all my coin to fix this.
This would not have happened on one of the worlds I previously admined on. A dm would have been sent in as soon as possible fixed the factions for the player using the dmfi faction wand and would have been compenstated for any lost xp or gold.
Alright, I think I'm going to have to amend this a bit. It seems a dm could not get to me. and there were a lot of hecklers on the site. So, I can't blame the dms for this however they said they couldnt get the factions to work. I brought up my old world, Harvest Moon and took a pic of my using the faction wand. So, they should figure it out for the next global faction screw up. it is in fact a dmfi wand.
